It went kaput and I just found a big box of old disks in my parents' attic as well...
I know you can do the 2 disk thing with software but I've also heard of the Catweasel card but can't find it. And it's an ISA as well I hear I don't think I have ISA slots anymore.
Has anyone done this successfully, and is it worth buying software (at £18 ) or should I just try and pick up another Amiga (least favoured option)?

Well, I think transferring the disks will take more time and effort than downloading the games from the net. I would only transfer some disks, e.g. ones which have cool high-scores by yourself on them or disks where you have saved some of your own programs.
But, why not trying to repair your Amiga ?
Which model of Amiga is it ?
And what exactly died ? ( drive doesn't read or accept disk, picture only in one colour, or similar things... ??? ) |

It's a 1mb A500. It's been around the block a few times so it's not surprising it's dead...
Anyway, when I switch on the power supply it ticks and the machine doesn't power up. The ticking continues for a few seconds after I switch it off.
Does that ring bells with someone? |

This could be a dead power supply. Most likely a solder joint got loose insode if it has been carried around much and maybe fallen down some time...
Is it a psu with 5V/4.5A written on the back ? ( the light one )
But could also be your A-500 has a short circuit and the power supply is overloaded. If it is the 4.5A psu then it is a switching psu and when it is overloaded you can hear it clicking.
If you can get another psu then try it with the other one first. |

If it's something loose, maybe you can fix it or bring it to a local repair shop. Maybe they can help out? _________________ International Karate is being remade on the PS2 |

The first PC version was an ISA card, yes, but that was many years ago. The current one is PCI and allow you to do much more than just read floppies. You can connect Amiga joysticks, keyboard, the C64 sound chip SID (actually two of them) among other things.

Thanks for all your replies, I have a better idea now of what's going on with it.
I'll have to think it through though and decide what would be the best idea... I might pop down the local boot sale and see if they have any cheap replacements.
Which leads me to another question. For the sake of space I'd like to get an A600. Can that connect to PC as easily as the full size models? |

Yes, it can, and it can even more because it has this PCMCIA slot. But don't ask me how and which networking cards you can connect there ?!?
But:
The A-600 comes with Kickstart 2.0, which prevents some games from working !
Also, some very, very few ( a hand full real old games ) refuse to work on the A-600 because it has 1MB onboard installed and cannot be switched to 512k hardware. ( sometimes software 512k configuration helps )
I would suggest when you get your A-600 then get yourself a kickswitcher. Then you can use Kick 1.3 for gaming and Kick 2.0 for workbench and applications. |
