Granted I haven't seen many before, but I was under the assumption that the HDD was inside the A1200. It looks a bit awkward that way, especially with that thin, wide cable... is there enough room for it to securely fit inside the A1200 (without external HDD casing, if that's necessary)?

A1200 was designed for 2.5" laptop HD, but you can fit 3.5" drive inside with minimal cutting.

I looked into it a bit more, and it mentioned that the internal HDD cradle was missing. Is it absolutely required? And if so, how easily can a replacement be found?

2.5 HDD cradle is not necessary needed, but if you have 2.5 HDD it is useful. I have my 1200 equipped with 3.5 HDD inside, put directly to the chassis with some paper isolation to prevent short circuits , but it has a space and cooling problems, so I can´t have chassis screws tight.

Original Amiga 1200 has 2.5HDD cradle, and steel tin cover inside, you must remove both these things to install 3.5HDD, which is - of course - bigger, but much cheaper. The solution on your picture - internal 3.5 HDD, but outside the Amiga - I used with my A600, which was too small for putting it inside chassis. The main problem with attaching 3.5" device to Amiga is the interface (or modified data cable), that you need for connecting to original 2.5" internal driver socket.

Finding a 2.5" HDD for an A600/A1200 won't be an issue, since I have two laptops that I don't have power supplies for anymore. I could easily install the HDD of one of those, but I don't have a clue what would have to be done to format it for use with the Amiga (what software to use, etc.). Is there any way to get a 2.5" HDD to fit securely?

I took four pictures of my Ami 1200 with internal 3.5" HDD to let you imagine how it is solved.

Here you can see my Amiga covered up. Screws can´t be tight, because HDD is not slim enough.

When I open the case, I see this. HDD is under the keyboard and its cable (the green one).

When I lift the keyboard off, I reach the HDD itself. It is on standart 3,5" data cable, connected to Amiga through an interface.

4th view displays the situation under the HDD. Note the paper isolation in lower right corner, it is because isolating keyboard and accelerador card (keyboard has a tin on its bottom).
