Sadly true, I find the pc-look worms far more easy to remember myself, although I spent several weeks playing it on amiga. Problem with amiga worms' "identity" was they weren't stylized well enough. Lemmings were only a few pixels too but the characters were very well made since the early days.

There seems to be alot of posts saying we can't use certain icons becuase they appered on the C64 first. What everyone has failed to realise is that they are both Commodore computers.

So what you are saying would mean that Sonic is not a Master System Icon, becuase he first appeared on the Megadrive. Or look at Mario, he fist appeared on an Arcade machine in Donkey Kong, saying that it was a Nintendo machine still.

Anyway, just thought I'd point this out Very Happy

Because Amiga is an entity of it's own and can't be categorized as a "commodore machine" like sms or genesis are categorized as "sega". The reason is: it's the way it IS. I don't know if nintendo can do this but mega drive is really an advanced master system that can run master system games with a converter. Maybe all the necessary hardware is within the converter and mega drive is unrelated internally but this doesn't matter, practically it's a plug and play process. master system games had this line on their boxes after the release of mega drive "compatible with master system, master system 2 and mega drive with master system converter". Now this is a corporate strategy. Designing and releasing mega drive after master system and releasing games in similar boxes with similar manual and altering the already availavle identity. (black boxes instead of white etc) then making the old games compatible too. All these facts create a public opinion and leads to the result as defining both systems as "Sega" Such a thing was never the case with C64 and Amiga. In fact amiga was never considered as commodore's "next 64" partly because it wasn't designed internally. nintendo was mostly popular in us, mass manufactured and sold, even though there is much difference between say, nes and snes they are, for average guy newer and older "nintendos". They were known with the brand name. This happens on some products like Xerox for the photocopier but commodore never achieved this, doubtful that ever tried and now we are being ignorant suggesting a "never made mistake to be officialized" For me sms and mega drive shouldn't be called commonly as sega too but this concept is already available now, it's in our minds BUT it's not right so we absolutely shouldn't spread this to other systems.

Besides C64 was never a 8bit alternative to sega or nintendo as much as Amiga was an alternative to it's console rivals. I know many people like C64 here so I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but that kind of categorization hurts mine. Another reference to that casette driven alien and I'll puke.

Okay, I was going to ignore this topic, because it seems obvious that machines that have icons (like NES, Seggae and so on), generally are *only* remembered for these usually crappy games.

I admit, that I caught the Mario bug for a while, but the fact is that it is a shitty game. Also, for a while Alex Kidd was going to be the Sega Icon, but since the games were awful with a capital Z, he got dumped.

If I were to elect an Icon, it would be Turrican, because I bought my amiga on the basis of it. Sure, it turned up on the Commy first, but so what? For me it is the quintessance of at least part of the appeal of the Amiga gaming scene. Beautiful graphics and sound with a non-console feel of play, not infinite credits and easy gaming (NES games are ridiculously easy), but again, it does not for me cover all of amiga gaming.

The same reason applies for lemmings, it doesn't cover the entire amiga feel, only a very small part of it. Whereas Mario and Sonic basically scream,
"This is it...All nintendo and sega games are going to feel like this, even if they aren't platformers."

Do you really want the amiga to be remembered for only one thing?

Oh dear oh dear, someone said something very wrong. Mario games are not shite in any way and as much as I love the Amiga and it's games, and absolutely love Sonic games, I can't deny the fact that the mario games are and were the best 2D platformers ever made. The control scheme is perfect for a start (which I cannot say for Superfrog which falls short because of it's finnicky nature, same goes for Zool), the sheer amount of variety and the clear genius that has gone into creating the mario series (especially mario world - possibly the best platformer of all time - only in my opinion of course).

It's not shit by any means, even if you don't like it, it doesn't make it shit. And If you think the Megadrive and SNES will only be remembered for their aforementioned icons then you are sorely mistaken (I won't go into what else they'll be remembered for because this message would be half a mile long). And to say that all Megadrive/SNES games are essentially sonic/mario games with different skins then I REEEALLY think you've got some anti-console/pro-amiga thing going on. Just take a step back and try to have an objective view rather than the clear bias you are showing right now.

The thing with an icon is it need to have instant recognition with the public, I don't think the Amiga has that with any game because it was never in the public eye like the competing consoles where. I know from hundreds of documentaries how they look back at the history of gaming and completely miss out systems like the Amiga (probably because if they mentioned everything then the show would span 16 months) but mainly because they don't feature so promenent in gaming as consoles do. Not sure where to tie this rant up so I'll fade out now...

How the hell Nintendo managed to get a fat, short, plumber into a worldwide phenomenon is quite bizzare but I'll let them have it.

Oh and Burseg, the megadrive had all the innards of the master system already inside it, it could run the games from that, the converter was only needed to make it so master system games could be plugged in (more or less)

I personally never quite got the mario bug, or saw the appeal, but millions of other ppl did, so my hat goes off to Nintendo Smile

Sonic I loved (and still do) and I play it with my 6 and 4yr old sons on the megadrive regularly (I also get my ass kicked on Fifa2004 on the XBox by my 6yr old, but thats another story).

The Amiga was BIG in the UK, but it was never marketed and promoted properly by commodore. If the CD32 was promoted and advertised properly it might have succeeded (I just contradicted myself here!!!)

Anyway lets face reality, the Amiga is now dead, the megadrive is dead and the Snes is dead but Mario and Sonic still live on...... what part of Amiga lives on.. and yes as Lion-o states, the icons are relative to the companies not the machines!!

so my Amiga Icon is now either the Chicken head or the A !!!!

I play a lot of games on a lot of different systems and Amiga is not my favourite system. I AM objective. And in this objective frame of mind, I still say the mario games are less than wonderful. This is my opinion and you have yours. I find the controls far from perfect due to the ugly and sometimes unpredictable inertia system involved.

Yes, Nintendo managed to bring a fat plumber into the world, but amiga gave the world many many games and genres that don't have entire sites dedicated to crappy flash animations of the main characters getting killed in provocative and usually imaginative ways.

Nobody has really mentioned Xenon 2: Megablast - as far as I'm aware was this on any other formats? ( possibly ST )

The Bitmap Brothers and Sensible Software will be remembered fondly by all AMiga users

I also think the Cinemaware games will be

What about Geoff Crammond's racing games?

And of course Peter Molyneux games ( Populous, Syndicate, etc )

The Pinball Dreams/Fantasies & Illusions games

Kick Off, love it or hate it - really got the ball rolling for soccer sims on the Amiga, long before Sensi Soccer. What about that logo as an image to remember from the Amiga - that piccy from Kick Off 2 - with the player on his kness! CLASSIC
