I’m getting REALLY nostalgic and want to go back to the good’ol Amiga days. I don’t have any working Amiga hardware or floppies anymore, but I have my A1200’s entire HD backed up in LHA files and want to get it and those games I remember so well up and running again.

My PC to do this on:
Windows XP SP2
P4 2Ghz
1GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card

Here’s my plan and questions:
1. Buy Amiga Forever from Cloanto and install it.
2. Download and install lemonade from lemonamiga.com.
3. The TOSEC collection.
- a. Where do I get it from?
- b. Does it come with installation instructions?
- c. Are there other games collections I should be aware of?
4. WHDLoad
- a. where do I get it
5. Can I simply set up a HD with WinUAE and unarchive my lha files to recreate my old A1200 config? I’ll probably have specific questions on this when the time comes.
6. PC joysticks
- a. What should I look for when selecting a PC joystick/gamepad?
- b. Any model recommendations?
- c. Can I hook up two joysticks? I love multiplayer games.
7. I’m sure I’ll like it, so donate to WinUAE and Lemonamiga.
8. What else do I need to know, get or do?

eekk! a lotta stuff to go over!

1. Buy Amiga Forever from Cloanto and install it.

if you like. there are alternatives however. (dumping roms from real amigas etc) and just downloading winuae from the website.

2. Download and install lemonade from lemonamiga.com.

personally i'm holding out on it supporting HD... but it's personal prefernce and i'd certainly recommend it to those new to amiga emulation

3. The TOSEC collection.
- a. Where do I get it from?

fileshare, or planetemu.net have a version of it hosted as individual ADF files.

- b. Does it come with installation instructions?

it's just a collection of Amiga Disk images.... particuarly well-labelled. installation is "put file in adf folder" Laughing

- c. Are there other games collections I should be aware of?

i like the pre-installed WHDLoad games collections KillerGorilla was doing, although his site is down at the moment i believe.

4. WHDLoad
- a. where do I get it

www.whdload.de

5. Can I simply set up a HD with WinUAE and unarchive my lha files to recreate my old A1200 config? I’ll probably have specific questions on this when the time comes.

yes you can. have a search on this forum, i've definately helped explain how to set up HD emualtion and WHDload games before, and i'm sure a few others have gone over the topic before.

6. PC joysticks
- a. What should I look for when selecting a PC joystick/gamepad?

something you feel comfy with. some people like real amiga joysticks in their PCs, some people like the competition pro style USB ones.

- b. Any model recommendations?

i have a USB connector which takes two PS2 pads. it's lovely.

see here!

- c. Can I hook up two joysticks? I love multiplayer games.

yep, anything that shows in windows. another reason why i like the above!

7. I’m sure I’ll like it, so donate to WinUAE and Lemonamiga.

i'm sure you will!

8. What else do I need to know, get or do?

have fun, kick around and talk amiga stuff with people here. help's always available.

good luck and happy gaming!

Clicked an ad on this site which led me here:
http://www.amigagames.co.uk/GamesINDEX.htm

5000 games on 3 DVD's. Sounds good. Should i get this instead of Amiga Forever? or perhaps in addition to Amiga Forever.

i'd definately say no! rip off merchants making money of software that isnt theres to be selling!

it's on the web and it's pretty easy to find. www.planetemu.net is a good place to start, and there's no reason why you couldnt be up and running in a matter of minutes, rather than waiting for that to arrive.

Right, that's the way Horace would do it. I would do it in a very similar way, a bit like this....

Download Winuae 1.2 from here. Install it.

Next you need to aquire the Amiga kick roms. (i.e, roms that tell Winuae to behave like a A500, A600 etc..) If you PM me, I can probably help you out there, tell you where to find them all.

When you have Winuae installed & have the correct kick roms you should Download Lemonade & the screenshot packs from this site. If you downloaded the screenshot packs you need to open the zip folders before continuing. important...These screenshots must be extracted into the screenshots folder that Lemonade creates in order for Lemonade to find them. These screenshots must all be kicking around loose inside the folder, NOT inside seperate folders in the folder. Next, simply install Lemonade as instructed in the install wizard & insert the kick roms when & where prompted. When finished, Lemonade will connect to this site to update the games encyclopedia. There's no point having an empty encyclopedia now is there? At some point a message will pop up as if you've done somthing wrong, don't worry, this always happens. There should be an option to ignore. It says this is not recommended, so what! Click it, you'll be fine.

Next you're going to want some games to play. These are going to be disk images called ADF's. (Amiga Disk Files) You'll find these here & here. You should add these links to your favourites, you're going to need them a lot. When you've downloaded some "disks" from these links you can open Lemonade & set the game you've aquired as playable. Insert the "disks" you've downloaded into the correct "drives" in Lemonade & click "set as playable" & you are ready to go!

Last but not least, you wanted advice on joysticks. Believe me, this IS the place to go... Here!.
These joysticks kick ass! Here is a link to a thread on this site where I am talking about them...
here!

Hope that helps, enjoy! Thumbs Up

Thought i'd give a progress update.

I got WinUAE 1.2 up and running.
Why is everyone recomending 1.2 when the latest is 1.3.2?
http://www.winuae.net/

Got some roms and WB3.1.

Got some games, played too much Arkanoid. Oh well, it was time well wasted.

Downloaded/installed lemonade and it's screenshots. I didn't have lemonade scan my adf files yet. I plan on downloading a lot of stuff and want to arrange then in subdirs of a,b,c,etc.... Plus i wanted to play with WinUAE and it's settings.

That brings up a question, where in WinUAE can i set it to open in a window instead of full screen?

Next up:
i really need to get joysticks
download more games
set up an Amiga HD and restore my A1200 backup
beg for continued lemonade developement
find time to have a life away from the computer
make donations to WinUAE and lemonade

Wiser, I have winuae 1.3.2... seems fine.

* ctrl+f12 will give you full screen,
* under display, options have centering checked for hor and vert.
* recent edition under filter (enable it) and then play with the slides
to resize your screen (best do this when you got a game in a window
first.

If you run Winuae via Lemonade all these options can be chosen & saved very easily in the default emulator options/settings. You can also save your USB joystick/s ready to play here rather than looking for them everytime you play.

I did not find any problem with 1.32. I'm using Bloodwych's ClassicWB P96 version.

i'm just using a clone of my real a1200, which is just wb3.0 with magic wb installed.

often crashes copying files to ADF, with dragging them in or by copying in CLI. it's not just once or twice it's happened.... it is quite a lot Evil or Very Mad

it has locked up a few times just when pressing F12... the screen not refreshing upon returning to emualtion, but this is a lot rarer.

cant say what it's been like for anyone else, but this is what's happened to me and i've barely had it a week!

Then I'm not crazy Laughing
1.3.1 crashes or perhaps just vanishes after dragging and dropping any .uss file before starting emulation...
I've just checked the bugfix list, and the debug window problem has been solved, so i won't complain about that.

@wiser3: About your joystick dilemma, if you still have your amiga joysticks you can always plug one or two to your PC parallel port, if you get an amiga4player or some other simple adaptor, and the proper drivers for your OS (for windows you have ppjoy -works with amiga4player-, direct pad pro and ntpad).

can't duplicate here. more information please?

can't duplicate this either (and haven't seen any similar reports). Need more information like logs and settings etc..

JIT WB crashes are usually caused by faulty background program or too low stack (JIT crashes very easily if programs do something "stupid")

btw, bugs don't get fixed without reporting them.. most bugs need specific conditions before they trigger.

hehe... fair point Toni, but what with doing a bit of beta-testing for other programs myself, i never like to report bugs until i can specifically reproduce them on demand, and i havent had time to be "testing" winuae... just using it Laughing

quickly looking at my standard config it's happened largely without JIT i think (though it may have happened with it as well) - it's usually just dragging an LHA file or something onto an ADF created by winuae, and the whole of workbench locking-up.

settings are roughly : 020+FPU, 2 meg chip, 4 fast, 16 z3, AGA, KS3.1, HD's from folders.

next time i see it i'll try and get a more specific set of parameters down for you, including saving the config (i have a habit of tinkering with my general settings)

Well, only a bit... I've verified that this issue is not new to the 1.3.x version, and I'm probably one of the few people who whould try to drop a .uss file into that window anyway Wink

@Toni: email sent Smile
