|

This message is primarily directed to the Admin (Kim Lemon).
First, let me apologize for my ignorance of this subject matter since I have no prior experience with anything but an Amiga 1000 and very few commercial games. (I lived on freeware/shareware for the most part.)
I noticed while perusing the Top 100 listing that it appears some games are rated more than once. For example, there are three entries for Chaos Engine. Two have a 1994 date and the other 1993.
(This also applies to Cannon Fodder, Civilization, and perhaps others.)
Only after checking the game details did I realize that each rating applied to a different hardware setup.
To avoid confusion, (I'm already old and confused enough, as it is) would it be possible to include the Hardware category in the Top 100 listings? And the game revision, if applicable?
Are there really enough differences in the games to warrant separate ratings for each Hardware setup? Most of the screenshots look almost identical. Is it a rating of the "Hardware" or a rating of the "Game"? I realize that the gameplay on one Hardware setup may be somewhat better than another, but unless it is a totally different revision, with added features, is it necessary to have multiple reviews and ratings on what are really equivalent games? |

It's a little bit of both. The games you are refering to are indeed individual pieces of software but to be used on different machines. Cannon Fodder & Chaos Engine have versions of the game for all the different Amiga chip sets. OCS, ECS & AGA. (Amiga 500, 600 & 1200) There is also the CD32 which is a console rather than a PC.
Winuae can emulate all these machines but although they are all called Amigas they can be quite different in performance. It's a bit like a NES, SNES & N64. Because of the performance differences the games can change quite a bit, therefore requiring individual scores.
If you are wanting to download a game but are confronted with the choice of 2/3, do what I do. Either opt strait for the most advanced/newest one (AGA/Amiga 1200) or have a quick look in the games section on this site to see what the forum members thinks best. _________________

I sorta agree though with multiple enteries for the same game - maybe taking up a place for another worthy game _________________ Fave Amiga Games:

I agree with what Lezdy92 pointed out and I've got a solution for this. For the top list I will make filters which will allow you to view seperate toplists with OCS/ECS, AGA or CD32 games only. In addition to this, you will also be able to view top platformers, adventures, sports games etc. etc. This is easy code, but the difficult part is to decide which "filters" to use, especially when it comes to the game genres and sub-genres. It should be there soon though since I really want this feature myself. _________________

Thanks for the quick replies.
Kim's solution sounds more complicated than I expected.
Usually, the same game on the more advanced platform is probably the best as far as playability and smooth graphics, although there may be a few exceptions.
My idea was to combine all the ratings for the same game, show the different hardware configs (versions) that are available, and then let the users comment on which hardware config (version) is the best by listing its advantages or faults (if they have experience with more than one).
Or, somehow incorporate a sub-rating under each game that rates the game by best Hardware/Version.
Maybe just showing the OCS or AGA, etc. in the rating list would be sufficient.
What's with this?
Chaos Engine AGA (rating #2) has only 22 votes.
Chaos Engine OCS (rating #27) has 120 votes.
Civilization OCS (rating #28) has 76 votes.
Civilization AGA (rating #68) has 54 votes.
In the above examples, Chaos Engine AGA is much higher rated than the OCS version, but it has only 1/6th the votes - maybe that skews the results.
Civilization OCS is rated higher than the AGA version. Is this unusual?
Since I'm now using WinUAE the 'Hardware' is presumably no longer a limiting factor. I'm just looking for the best version of each game. I don't want to be playing a substandard game if I don't need to. That's why a rating system and user comments are important.
Thanks for the GREAT Lemon Amiga site, Kim! |

Letting users vote or comment on which hardware config they like the most is imho "too much" on top of the current voting/comment system. Some only owned A500, some only CD32 and some only A1200. When it comes to databases I prefer to simplify, seperate and make it possible for the user to display distinct results. I think it would be interesting to see the rating for the AGA version while viewing the details for an OCS game though. _________________

I've added some functions to the top list.
You can now choose if you want to view all games or A500/A600, A1200, CD32 only. You can also choose how many votes a game must have to be included in the list.
The default view is "Model: Any Amiga" and "Votes: 30".

| Kim, would it be hard to implement an option to only show the highest ranked version of a game in the top list? That would be the optimal solution IMO. |

Like if a game has OCS, AGA and CD32 release, then only show the version with highest rating? I'm not quite sure if I know what you mean. _________________

I'll give it a try to add it as an alternative, though it might be tough. _________________
