I use the same avatar since my earliest appearance on LA, and it is based on my most beloved game ever. _________________

Yes, but animated avatars should be forbidden (unless the animation is very discreet)! So should animated signatures. |
Sorry, somehow skipped over this one. Does this mean i have to redo my avatar?
And why are animated avatars not ok and animated signatures ok? |

Because they are often distracting and annoying. Your avatar is OK, but there are some horror examples out there. _________________

i was going to sumise that it was becuase animated sigs are hosted extrrnally and dont fill up the lemon server - this also makes them very difficult to restrict without manually warning individual users.
oh and for the record, the animated gifs in my sig totally up to less than the limit of 2 avatars.... it's not exactly pushing the bandwidth.
@ sepp - he said "should" be forbidden not "are"
although if Kim thinks they shold be - why are they allowed?
personnaly i think its silly not to allow them - it's only a bit of fun, and a primarily games site shouldnt be taken too seriously. Ok maybe the pages load a bit slower, or those with lesser connections, but common, it's 2007 not 1997 when most people were still stuck on dial-up! _________________

Bandwidth is not an issue at all, but excessive use of animated signatures and avatars surely is annoying for members who are interested in reading the texts (which I guess most forum members are ). _________________

is there no option to let users not display sigs if they find them annoying / distracting?
most forum software offers this option
at least my sig is fun rather than some show-off specifications list Kim _________________

There's no such option, and I doubt that most forum software has the option to disable specific signatures. It's probably just an option of displaying or not displaying signatures. _________________

Disabling signatures isn't possible in phpBB2, and even if it was I personally don't want to disable all signatures because one or a few signatures distract my forum experience. I set up these rules to make the forum experience as comfy as possible for the majority of the visitors. _________________

Just to clarify, I neither find the HoraceAndTheSpider or Sepp avatars/signatures annoying. If I did I would have PM'd you guys a long time ago. The rules are guidelines and should not be followed very strict... common sense is more important. _________________

lol, dont worry - i had figured as much
Graham was right, i was referring to a general "display sigs" on/off function, but if phpBB2 doesnt have it... well that's all we need to know!
Always better to discuss these things than leaving people wondering i think _________________
