Welcome to the wrong end of "the economies of scale". Right now OS4 is in the early stages, and offers nothing to "Average Joe Computer Buyer". Sure its really lovely to use, but its not ready for "the big time".
Thus at the moment, its for early adopters, developers and anyone who loves AmigaOS enough to spend lots of money.
But the future doesn't have to be bleak (although it will take a lot of hard work, and maybe a miracle ).
Right now the OS4 community has a lot of momentum, enthusiasm and developers. There is a lot of progess going on "behind the scenes". The gaps in the Amigas software line-up are slowly being worked on, so that in the future it WILL make a compelling alternative.
Sure, if the motherboards always cost $700, that will all be for nothing, but theres hope there, too.
Eyetech, the company behind the A1, have spent something like 15 years successfully selling customised Amigas for things like kiosks, point of sale, karaoke etc. and wanted to continue to use their Amiga expertise to provide quality products where customers don't require a specific OS; they just need functionality and stability. They are especially looking to the expanding chinese markets. They will be pushing the MicroA1 as a low-power consumption server product in this market (in this case probably running LinuxPPC, though). They have been all over asia with IBM making keynote speeches and making contacts.
It is hoped that over time these sales can subsidise the not-profitable Amiga desktop users and the price will come down over time. |

But if the prices do come down, it will probably take a long time to really happen.. And how much would be the reasonable price then? 400$ or less? I admit that I am happy to hear about OS 4 being developed, and those new motherboards are manufactured, but this still is a long shot. They need a miracle to boost up the sell.. Hopefully it happens. _________________ |
