Haaay, a new round dawns on lofty horizon - this round is gonna be a toughy!
Yo! Joe!
Controls:
Fire ............................ use current weapon / punch
Up .............................. jump (or use 2nd fire button)
Up + fire ..................... kick
Upward Diagonal ......... jump and auto grab ledges
Downward Diagonal .... crawl
Crouch ....................... pickup weapon / bottle / health ankh / star
Crouch + Fire ............. swap weapons
Weapons:
Nunchucks.........You get (at least) three opportunities to pick up one of these on the first level, and this is usually the first weapon you manage to find. Good for taking out bats and thugs.
Power = Average.
Destroys low objects = NO!
Climb while holding = YES
Use while jumping = NO!
Beating Stick......There are two opportunities to find one of these, although it is recommended to find the first one sooner rather than later. This is a great melee weapon and is very powerful - especially for bosses!
Power = Strong
Destroys low objects = YES
Climb while holding = NO!
Use while jumping = YES!
Purple Fire Oil...... There are a few of these on the first level, but they really come in handy for removing bosses - especially the Vampire boss at the top of the level.
Power = Very Strong
Destroys low objects = YES
Climb while holding = YES
Use while jumping = YES
Shuriken Stars...... These are handy for helping to remove enemies at the same height but at the other side of the screen. Again, the Vampire boss comes to mind.
Power = Average / Weak
Destroys low objects = NO
Climb while using = YES
Use while jumping = YES (I think)
Chain Saw............ You'll find this in the attic (roof) of the castle on level one, along with plenty of fuel to power it. Unfortunately it's a bit unweildy and is often more of a pain to use than it should be. The fuel only lasts a few seconds, so you must make sure you can use this thing before it's all used up.
Power = Very Strong
Destroys low objects = Some
Climb while using = NO!
Use while jumping = YES (I think)
Playing Tips
Yo Joe! can be a daunting game to begin with - even for Turrican veterans like me. The enemies often seem to be quite hard and the first level is also quite large. There are multiple routes to complete this first level, some easier than others, but two out of the possible starting routes will lead to a 'Nunchuck' weapon. You may also find a 'Beating Stick'; which is the perfect the weapon for killing bosses. However, due to the weight of this large stick it is not possible to grab on to ledges with this item in your hand - so you'll have to swap to the Nunchucks or the hand icon (Crouch + fire). If possible, try to find a route which lets you pick up both the Stick and and Nunchucks. If you find a weapon you already have it will be ignored. Pull down on the contoller to pick up anything you find.
Skeletons can only be killed as they roll around as a skull - and may shrink and re-grow if you try to tackle them as they walk around.
If you get too hot and botherd, try taking a cool shower to refresh yourself.
Some routes lead to extra bosses, while others will navigate around them. There are four bosses on level 1, but only two must be taken care of in order to complete the level. Once on a boss screen - you will be unable to move forward until you beat the boss - so be warned - bosses cost lives!
The other key element is to look out for all the extra lives (the larger of the two ankh icons; the smaller ones being Health top-ups) which are scattered around every level, and the player will be in a very good position to survive the level if they pick all these up.
TIP: Level 1: climb out of the window!
Eventually we reach the rooftop of the castle, and we can get to the exit by either tackling (of avoiding) the boss. Next to him is a large bird (the exit).
The second level is much easier than the first as it is a linear routed level, and things only start to get tricky again on level 3. Level 3 is a Mayan level with (again) multiple routes to find and master. The huge bosses can be very hard to beat, and there isn't always a 'safe place' to stand either, so if you're gonna lose lives you may as well hammer the bosses hard.
TIP: Avoid thinking you can crouch and fire - because you can't - as soon as you do this you'll simply swap weapons! - so always take on enemies in a standing position.
TIP: Weapons have to be found all over again on every level - so use them all up before exiting the previous one.

First attempt:
Yo! Joe!
This screen is from level 3. Somehow I came up from underneith this boss screen and the game scrolled me onto it - even though I was trapped on a platform below. The boss didn't activate because I was still off-screen and couldn't find my way up there. Bugs!! I can play a game a million times on my tod, but in the compo it all goes tits up. Lets cross our testicles that this never happens again! Arrrgh! [/pissed mode off]
Score: 24,216
XenonII:
Read it and WEEP! (I know I am)
Score: 54,600

Thanks for details on Yo! Joe! since I've not really played it (and I'm unlikely to read the manual *cough*) a guide to the controls was useful.
Just gave Xenon II a blast, got a half decent score then started again for another run and the fxcking thing crashed on me. A lesson for us all here TAKE A SCREENSHOT OF YOUR SCORE AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY. I seem to remember that the original also had a habit of resetting my A500 with guru meditations so at least it's an accurate emulation.... |

Second go at Yo joe:
This time I took a different route through level 3 and everything worked fine. I know I missed a couple of sections due to taking the wrong route - and as soon as you find the boss there's no way back. Still... I think it's a good score to be going on with:

| Great score there Rich. Any chance of a smaller pic? Anything up to about 440px wide is great for the forums but bigger than that and it starts to cock things up... |

Third and perhaps final go at Yo! Joe!
This time I took all the correct routes and (apart from a couple of treasure chests in the egyptian level - which I haven't a clue how to get to) I managed to clean up every level. Only time (and john4p) will tell...

Can't remember how to take a snapshot on WinUAE - not used it for a long time - had a free evening so thought I would have a go at Xenon 2 _________________ Fave Amiga Games:
