I seem to have a very different tactic to most I'm guessing. You guys seem to be strategically working the levels for specific outcomes. Whereas me, I take it real slow, don't care about the white ghost whale, and just play it safe. I'm also aiming to complete the game so im overly cautious with lives.

I have noticed tha the frequency of high scoring stuff does increase post levels approx 55. I know there are set routines to activating most stuff, but it does seem my points go sky high relatively late on in the game.

I reckon I can pull 1.5 I just need the time.

Slow and steady wins the race

Yup.

I kill of all the bad guys but one and wait until the "hurry up" message appears before killing him. This allows plenty of time for the useful icons to appear (e.g. flasks). After that point only "EXTEND" letters tend to appear, if at all.

I wouldn't know, as I haven't made it that far yet. As long as I have 600,000 by level 20, I know I'm in with a chance. If I can make to level 40 and get the secret doors on levels 20 & 30 I am also in with a shot at getting 1.5+ million.

Good luck, Mr. Turtle! Smile

600,000 by level 20!? Jeez, I'm lucky to hit 250k by that point... Sad

I'm still having difficulties with this game. I tried falling through the screen to spawn the flasks but it didn't seem to work very well. In the end I discovered that you can pop those bubbles if you use the spines on the creatures back. I had three attempts to make a playguide for this game:

First attempt (Amiga 1) - I got to level 30 but only 572k score.
On my second attempt (Amiga 2) - I found a few flasks and got to level 19 and 851k.
My third (Amiga 3) I collected the bonus gems on level 20, I reached level 37 and 883k.

You can see the final result here:

Link

So it was a slog and ultimately didn't lead to a high score.

edit: btw, has anyone else noticed the level design for level 28 is rather symbolic?

@ Seth - Nice try. Even if you stay there you'll still be leading the championship by 7 points Wink. Good to see yet another Lemon whitewash!

I tried that in the beginning, but (in the ADF version atleast) it is purely random. I'm not sure exactly how the randomness is generated, but I suspect it may be time based as I tend to score alot more (and get more flasks) when playing between 8pm onwards.

I will watch that later. It sounds like we are fairly similar in terms of skill (and luck). I got the secret door on level 20 last night (it always appears on the top platform) and managed to get a score just under 1.1million and reached level 48. I was so annoyed that I didn't better my last score and get back my 2nd place Sad

Will have to check that out. I have noticed that alot of levels are themed around other arcade games of the time (e.g. Space Invaders).

It isn't over just yet.

Whilst we are in a sharing mood, here's some notes some may find useful...

It is impossible to collect all (or any) icons that appear when you collect a flask on these levels:

2,17,23,32,33,36,47

On these levels, any left over bubbles turn into bonuses after the last bad guy is killed:

1,5,10,16,31,

You get an extra life when you score reaches:

30,000
100,000
1 million (confirmed)

As a sidenote, when playing on level 15 a few days ago I got the water icon and was flushed down the scoreboard (outside the level screen)! I believe it happened as I pressed a different direction on the joystick just as I collected the icon.

Regards,
Lonewolf10

Hi Lonewolf. Thanks for posting those tables. I knew about most of those - especially the fact that some flask flowers are simply impossible to collect them all. Thanks for sharing Smile.

FUNNY you should mention this. It is a very rare bug but the same thing happened to me too! Watch the video at 14:04. I think there must be a gap in the level somewhere. Razz

Yeah, that makes sense.

Oh, I just confirmed getting an extra life when the score reaches 1 million, and I'm back in 2nd place! Smile

Last day of the round folks!

Remember the winner of this round gets to choose what year we pick the games from for round 8! Any year between 1987 and 1995... except, er, not '94 or '95 as they've already been chosen. So if anyone who thinks they are going to win could send me a PM telling me their choice I would be most grateful.

I just finished my best effort about 30 minutes ago... and discovered something not mentioned in the guide...

a secret door appears on level 40 too, as long as you have lost no lives since the start of the game!

I got as far as level 63. Those space invadery levels (one is level 63, pictured) are cool, but damn tough. Those guys on level 63 shoot straight down! Sad
What is the significance of BR10 on level 59 (also pictured)?

BR could be Broadhurst (programmer), but who knows.
