Hi All,
I was recently on ebay and by chance saw an Amiga up for sale - and so many memories came flooding back (my best mate had a C64 and then an amiga) that I got all nostalgic and decided that I should treat myself!
OK - so we have a Wii and a PS3 indoors - the games just don't compare.....
Anyway, I am hoping to join the ranks in the next few weeks if a good deal comes up. I figured an a1200 plus a CF hard drive preloaded with everything should do me.
Then I start seeing lots of posts about needing either very rare ram upgrade boards or an accelerator card in order to play the good games??? Looks a bit more expensive than I hoped.
Anyway,
I shall hopefully be posting and updating over the next few weeks.
Look forward to virtually meeting you all. |

Welcome from me, too
All You'll need for great retro Amiga gaming is WinUae (I presume You have PC with Windows) and adfs. (Amiga game images/files which are freely distributed all over the net)
And of course, if You wanna "real thing" just go with that A 1200 + CF.
About accelerator You mentioned, You'll need that thing like fish needs a desert ! Actually there are some Amiga games which will utilize that "Speedy Gonzales thing" - Let me count them : 1, 2, 3... ...khm... that's all _________________ ☭ Some people says : Amiga has no future ! ☭ |

Thanks All.
I did think about emulators and have it set up on the PC - but you know what, its just not the same is it.
I find it astounding that these machines are still going strong 20 years down the line.
So from the posts above I should be OK with my proposed kit and then wait for the memory upgrades etc?
I have a bad feeling I could get carried away with this after a while and turn into a bit of a nutter collecting all sorts of Amiga bits and bobs...... |

I'm sure a lot of people understand that feeling.
Considering over 90% of games run fine on 1MB A500, I doubt you'll need that much stuff.
If you're gonna get obsessed feel free to join us in the games league.
Enjoy the site. _________________

Right,
I have just won an A1200 on ebay - got to arrange pick up.
Already have a CF hard drive on the way.
Now whats all this about fixing flicker etc? I have an old crt in the summer house but for a while I want to run it through the main TV (LCD HD Panasonic) in the front room (just got to find a way to make it blend in so the wife doesn't complain)
Any advice gratefully received....
cheers |

If You gonna use Your Amiga only for gaming then forget the Flicker-fixer ! - Only a few to none games use interlaced mode. (when it's used - usually for static cut-scenes)
Any advice gratefully received....
cheers |

Well, I have re read some of the posts above and have another question.
I have the Amiga and the CF drive and will put it together tonight hopefully.
I realise that I probably do not need an accelerator, (and the prices I see for them are higher then i want to spend on indulging what I assume is some kind of mid life crisis that i am going through) but do I need some additional RAM? All the games I will be playing will be Whdload off the hard drive and I see lots of comments that extra ram is needed for some of these games.
As far as I can see, (excluding accelerators) there are 2 types. a trapdoor RAM extension (which do not seem terribly common on ebay etc and go quickly when they appear), or the cheaper PCMCIA cards which are considered a poor option on the 1200 as they slow down the device but are available and half the price of the very cheapest accelerators and will do the job on any games they are needed for.
Any advice/thoughts? |

Aaa screw my impatience and inability to wait.
I have ordered a Hawk 4mb Ram board.
I should be keeping the postman really busy this week so I should be all setup by next weekend.
Only thing I will be missing I would thing is an auto joysitck/mouse switcher.
Might even cave in on that soon I suppose. |

Well 3 and a half weeks after my original post, I now have
A1200
8gb CF Hard drive running CWB adv (moved on from the 4gb one)
4mb Amitek Hawk card (But Blizzard 1230 IV with 64mb should get here any day)
New mouse
Joystick port extenders
Automatic roboshift mouse switcher
a couple of Cheetah Mach 1 joysticks (were always my favourites)
Dust cover
PCMCIA adapter for transferring stuff from PC (and a few CF cards to go with it)
Spare set of old keys (so I can try retr0briting them soon)
A spare zipstick, and a couple of old megadrive joypads that work with it.
Oh well. The obsession has me....... |
