i have a DS with the M3 real, and i've been trying some of this stuff.

From what i tried, the Megadrive emulation was pretty poor/awful, so i'm surprised to see it praised here. i tried one with no sound, and the other was changing speed a lot. Maybe this is because i'm comapring it to the PSP, which managed pretty much perfect emulation of the Megadrive.

The best i've found so far has been ZXDS, the speccy emulator. Its nice being able to play a few text adventures and the like, where it wsnt really possible on the PSP (due to lack of keyboard.) with slot-saving and 128k emulation and many other functions, this is a very well constructed emulator.

all-in-all i've been massively disapointed with the DS. It's packed full of terrible or underachieving original titles. (Dr Who Top Trumps has been one of the best games i've found).. games like NZS and Kirby are passable but far too easy and really dumbed down, and others like Rainbow Islands are so far removed from the original versions that i wanted to bludgeon myself to death with a spoon as a result of playing them. "Novel" games like Electroplankton seem like a good idea, but are massively let down by a complete lack of functionality, becoming more like 2-minute toys that a nicely developed program.

I've also found a massive lack of any homebrew of interest, or at least homebrew that's well-enough developed. Elite DS is just the GBA version recompiled, and there's no sight of a Frontier port which would work briliantly... or perhaps some of the old strategy games which seem like they would suit the touch-screen excellently.

Whilst its fine to be able to play GBA games on, i've never been very into GBA games anyway... much like the DS original games, many of them are aimed at too young a market for myself, and the best ones end up being the ports of old Amiga games.

For homebrew and commercial games, the PSP is many many times better i'm afraid to say (for fear of a lynching)

Which Megadrive emulator are you doing?

I'm using jEnesisDS 0.7 and has full sound emulation and plays ok for me

A lot of Nintendo Games are baby-ish, I agree, however Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is excellent

that's the second one i used. certainly better than picodrive (no sound) but it was clearly evident that it was fluctuating with speed. A problem i have complained about with PSPUAE many times.... i would assume its a limitation of a framerate limiter.

I played Out Run on it more than anything else

i too agree, not all games are child-like... Res Evil can be played as a perfect clone of the original! however, platform games, and other bits that really suit the DS, dont need to be as dumbed-down as they are. All it does is make me think that the PSP , which we are always told "lacks quality titles" , has a lot more to offer the older generation.

Flashback and Another Word you are playing are Genesis ports?

There is another world GBA version available for download made by its original creator. Can you run GBA games from cart?

I think you can run GBA games on the DS but not GB games

Another World & Flashback are on the Genesis emulator and they run brilliantly on the DS - very very impressive

If you have GBA cart, then you can run GB emulator like I am doing on GBA. Wink

Here is another world GBA version, but you'll probably need GBA cart, not DS cart.

Trying to get the Atari ST emulator ( Styx DS ) running and having no joy - anyone managed to get this thing working.

In the absense of an Amiga emulator I wanted to see what it was like

Really want this to work as apparantly the games are really playable - Dungeon Master, Rick Dangerous & Xenon 2, etc have been play tested

I have looked at problems and apparantly the ST files go in the folder roms/st - but I cannot enter the / character as a file is not allowed to include it

Any help guys.

Wouldnt mind a bit of old skool 16 bit gaming

EDIT - apparantly need a tos.img file for ST emulation , which I found, but still no joy. Found the info at the site below:

I have never really had a problem installing emulators before, but this is a NIGHTMARE

Tried everything and google searched everything. Renamed the file tos.bin

Even the got the version 1.04(fr) it quotes, but alas, no joy - this emulator WILL NOT work for me

Please can someone get it working and help me with it!

Cheers

Actually managed to get it working ( sort of )

Although I re-named the tos.bin file, it still held as an IMG file. Only way it worked was by renaming it via the DS Organize utility.

This file was then placed in the root directory of my R4 card

The normal ST workbench-like screen now loads up and you can use the touch screen of the DS to control the mouse pointer ( quite slow, but still cool! )

Just trying to work how to load a bloody ST game now!

As expected - NOTHING

I'm giving up on this and going out to drink myself stupid

If anyone manages to get an ST game to load using the R4 card - let me know!

EDIT - MANAGED IT! YES

Would advise anybody thinking of giving the ST emulation a go on the DS not to.

Was not worth all of the effort. In a perverse way, trying to get it to work was the best part!

Not many games ( at least the one's I wanted ) would work.

Secondly the one's that did, the emulation speed was too slow and the sound too choppy.

Whilst I respect and admire the work that has gone into getting the DS to run an Atari ST emulator, in reality it is pretty much unplayable. Once the speed is sorted and sound playback fixed ( if ever ) this could be quite nifty, but at present I would advise anybody not to bother.

If of course you want to and are having no joy getting it to run, give me a shout and I will be able to help.

In the mean time I would stick to FrodoDS (C64 ) & jEnesisDS ( Megadrive ) emulation, whilst although not perfect, do have a good selection of games available which are really playable and good sound playback. Flashback on the jEnesisDS is awesome - well recommended.

I use SpeccyDS far more than I play anything modern on my DS. It is the ideal system for Spectrum gaming.

Been playing a few games on Frodo64

Have to say Nebulus is emulated perfectly and is a joy to play on the DS

Will have to give the speccy one a go as have only heard good things about it ( same with the Amstrad emulator on the DS )
