8638 - must be missing something because the ball movement was side to side, bit boring.
2337 - very interested to hear peoples thoughts on the difficulty now they are being forced to compete. _________________

Downfall
Controls:
Joystick left / right - movement
P - pauses the game
M - toggles ingame-music on/off
ESC - quit play / exit game and save scores (you must exit the game to save high scores)
Collectable power-ups:
- double speed
- fall slower
- double score rate
- half score rate
- slow down + 150 points times the level number
- fall faster + 150 points times the level number
All the other fruits collected give 100 points multiplied by the level number.
All these pick-ups work for 10 seconds.
Playing the game:
(Ok, so there is a manual on the disk, but the disk is auto booting so you might not get to see it. To paraphrase..) In this game we must guide a mouse-type creature along a series of ever more difficult platforms to the next platform down. You can't jump, but you can move quickly. The aim is to survive each row of platforms safely, and you'll gain score as you do this. Bonus fruits will also randomly appear to be collected. After 60 rows the next round begins.
The current round is indicated by the colour of the platforms:
Round 1: Grey stone
Round 2: Yellow construction
Round 3: Metal blocks
Round 4: Steel Rods
Round 5: Green Grid
Round 6: Red Grid
Round 7: Ice
Round 8: Magenta Grid
Round 9: Light Grey stone
Round 10: Turrican style grass platforms
Each round is selected randomly from a set of three pre-programmed levels (so there are 30 pre-programmed 'levels' in the game). Each progressive round will get harder, and rows of platforms will start to disappear, making gaps bigger. There are supposed to be no impossible gaps in the game (but I found one during round 5). After 10 rounds the game loops back to round 1.
Tactics and Scoring:
Survive! You only have one life, so make it count. The bonus fruits, music notes etc, are worth 100 points in round one, 200 in round 2, and so on up to round 10; where they're worth 1k each! From the manual: "Bear in mind also that only one pickup will ever appear on screen at a time, and their positions are randomised, meaning you may well find some are impossible to reach whilst others are placed very conveniently." You'll also get more score for staying at the very top or very bottom of the screen; so waiting to collect things can be rewarding. Collecting the wings or the shoes both have a similar effect and allows all other items to be collect for a period. Obviously, avoid the Snail unless you want the extra score in early rounds, but the Heavy Weight can be useful on later levels as it allows a fast drop.
I predict the top spots will be (just like galaga) the guys who can loop the game at least once, so silly scores around 250k are not out of the question.
BabeAnoid
Get the Game:
WinUAE Users: Download HDF Here (right click, "Save As")
Running the HDF:
1. Open WinUAE and load a configuration you know works. (KS2 020 2MB or better).
..i.e, Configurations -> Select Config -> Load
2. Hard Drives -> Add Hardfile -> Path --> [...] -> BabeAnoid.HDF -> Load -> OK.
Note1: You don't need to set the filesys or the device etc, just click Ok.
Note2: This HDF file is auto-booting unless there are other hard drives installed (which may have priority).
3. Click Start.
Controls:
Mouse left / right - movement
Mouse up / down - aim when it capture mode
Mouse Left Button - launch ball when in capture mode
Mouse Right Button - special function / fire cannon
Cursor/Arrow keys - navigate map screen
Enter Key - level select (map screen) / upgrade select
ESC - quit level / exit shop
F1 - F6 - power-up select
Help / 'Page Down' - launch chaser ball (unlimited use?)
Space - drop flyball (or use another power-up for same effect)
S - isometric map
M - Music on/off
Arrow Up (during play) - unknown
Collectables and power-ups:
Plasma Ball - removes lots of objects without stopping (F1)
Fly Ball - use to hop over objects, use 'space' to drop (F2)
Shield - protection and some rebound (F3)
Cannon - trigger with RMB (F4)
Target Ball - captures ball on landing with bat, launch with LMB (F5)
Spiky Ball - destroys multi-hit blocks in one go (F6)
Rubber Ball - rebound, but not much more
Rescue Pods - these rotate round the player, each saves a life, x2 max
Lemmings - Collect for bonuses, land them on the bat for 1k bonus
Coins - small credits for use in the shop (no need to collect with bat)
Lazer - hit top of screen x10 times, only kills aliens, NOT blocks
Rain - collect for bonus money
Teleport - moves ball
Extend Bat- er? up to x5 I think?
Hit the top of the screen repeatedly to get the lazer gun. Then hit the top of the screen x10 times to get one lazer blast. The lazer cannot be used to destroy blocks!, only tanks and aliens.
Playing the game:
(Ok, this time there is a 'Help' section accessed from the game menu, so I won't go into details here. The game seems quite complex, suffice to say, check those help files out as a first priority!!). Here we play a bat and ball game where you must destroy all the destroyable blocks on each screen (most screens have some non-destroyable blocks too). Don't let the ball down past the bat at the bottom of the screen. As soon as the bat gets anywhere near the ball (even very late shots or side hits) the ball will go back up the screen again, and hopefully will destroy a few more blocks. Keep doing that until the screen is clear.
Tactics and Scoring:
The in-game manual gives this in more detail. Basically there is a set of powerups and by not dying you wont lose them. Buying more powerups in the shop helps a bit (you can find cash for this during the levels), and there is also a few basic Fruit Machine elements too. The Ball Kicker comes out at random, but you can trigger it yourself for a random after effect if the ball gets stuck... however..
Some of Newtons Laws of Motion are catered for in this game, except the third one. "Law III: To every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction". You will find, for example, that if the ball is traveling Left to Right down the screen, there is NO easy way to make to ball change directions and travel Right to Left up the screen; - so you'll either have to be very patient or very creative. Expect to play this game for over an hour if you want to score something noticable on the leaderboard.

Hmmm, that might be tricky. I've not used an LHA before. |

Me neither. This smells like a penalty for noobs like us.
Had a go at Downfall.. It's very suitable for compo but wouldn't bothered too much with playing it just for fun. Difficulty curve is very appropriate and platforms are getting trickier with time spend falling deeper and deeper. So you couldn't play it forever which wouldn't really be the goal of the game.

@lifeschool; those x2 and 1/2 icons do nothing as far as I've noticed. Scores multiply just as you progress to a new platform levels. |

Last year I walked away with two golds in this round, so this year I want a repeat performance. Here something for you guys to aim for after a few quick plays today:
Score: 28,917
Score: 400,551
Got to world 3 on BabeAnoid after playing for over an hour. Got bored and died. Got to round 5 of Downfall. Missed a difficult landing. Died.
@seth & Cape - BabeAnoid - for all ADF and WinUAE users I made a HDF. It's in the tips bit above. Biscuit asked me for the link for the first post but he's offline right now. The game is over 5MB, so it wont fit on a disk or ADF.
@seth - X2 -/2, if Grahams game is broken, PM Graham, we need all bugs fixed during week 1.
@all - remember to crop those Downfall pics and save to 450px wide, or they will become illegible. |

Thanks a lot lifeschool! BabeAnoid works fine with HDF.
I've noticed your highscore font in Downfall is different then mine. Are you using any other version of the game? I've tried both versions which Biscuit provided and font is different then yours. |

Fun little game. Neat animation of the main character and nice acceleration-system to his movement - good work, Graham, Lonewolf and mihcael.
Also good gfx by Predseda and good bgm by wilshy.

Downfall 7,449
Babeanoid 166,965
Got these for now, seems I'm gonna have to practice a little. Found both games fun, difficulty on Downfall is about right I think from first impressions, the difficulty comes from the fact that it only takes one slip and its game over. I think that's what makes it fun to play, especially when competing for high scores as you have to decide whether to grab that tricky to reach bonus or play it safe.
Babeanoid is a great breakout game but I see what people mean, games last for a long time and can see it taking real dedication to post a really high score.
Will keep trying anyway |

No, it's still the same version. The game comes with its own font but if it can't find it upon loading, it uses the default system Topaz font instead. If you play it from the ADF it should load and use the game font automatically. If you play it from hard drive then if you don't copy the Downfall.font files to the system's Fonts: assign then it won't find it.
(Oh yeah, Seth PM'd me about the x2 -/2 query, I have answered him but for everybody else - there is no bug. Admittedly it isn't a great power-up but it increases or decreases the speed your score goes up for a limited time. The counter also increases quicker if you are right at the top or bottom of the screen and the power-ups also alter this accordingly.) _________________ Lemon/EAB Super League 2013: Round 6 - Arcade Pool

Died too easily on this.. wasn't that difficult place yet.
BabeAnoid: 835,137
Well that was confusing game to start I had no idea for long time what was happening.. I guess I slowly begin to understand. But it seems a bit too easy game.. takes too much time because you can't seem to die easily here. I was afraid it would take whole evening, but then finally drained all lives in one level where I couldn't bother to play accurate anymore |

Thanks Graham, I didn't know the font thing. I'm using the LHA which I installed myself. I quite like the topaz, I actually prefer it so I'll keep it for now. I'll review Downfall a bit later once I've mastered it a bit more.
Shocking scores already people! This is only the first day...
edit: Graham has posted 47k - which I presume is a game complete. Will take us a lot of work to beat the maker of the levels!

Came to level 8, where there wasn't any platform at all. So I had to jump into the unknown and just when I fell down to die, a platform appeared, missing it for just an inch.
