Turrican II!!
We may have lost the previous round, but we at least get to play a real Amiga classic now. Lets have a look at a few things:
Controls: -
Fire to shoot.
Hold down fire to launch the 'surround' lazer cannon.
Press space to launch a blast wave.
Crouch + space = gyroscope (a protective ball of spikes)
Crouch + hold fire + space = destructo (blast the whole screen)
Lives: - There are always a few lives tucked away on every level, often hidden in the corners at the very extremes of the map, so it's always worth hunting around and giving each map a full reccy. There are maps on EAB but they don't show where the lives are (good!) so it's up to you to find them. For example, on level 1.1 you should come away with at least six lives (from your original 3), even taking into account running out of time once.
Time: - The levels all have a tight time limit, and at the end of this time you'll lose a life and the time will be reset. For this reason, it is well worth going for extra lives even when the time is about to run out (and therefore risking dropping a life), as this will reset the time limit and give you all you need to complete the remainder of the level. Plus, if you GET the extra life you have not dropped anything and simply gained a lot more time.
Enemies: - Enemies stay dead (good!) - so it is possible to clear the whole level. As some levels require the player to back-track occasionally, it is well worth clearing them out, not least from a scores point-of-view.
Aliens levels: - Just like Turrican 1, the Aliens levels (5.1, especially) are massive and require a lot of lives to navigate. Start out with at least nine lives on 5.1 if you want to see 5.2 alive.
Ok, I just had a go at this, see below:
Lives: 6
Score: 829,300
This is 4.1, a massive level it has to be said. I was looping the level trying to remove all the missile-launchers (the only things to kill on this level), when I came across the Dragon. The dragon is easy to kill, but I killed it and died at exactly the same time. The screen moved as I respawned; and I found myself trapped in the scenery I couldn't get out. With hindsight I suppose I should have tried using the Destructo to possibly bounce my way out - but I forgot - and quit the level with six lives still remaining... Better luck next time.. |

Ok, just had a second go. This is what the score looks like when you go to all the time and trouble of removing every destructable enemy on every single level. Unfortunately, the lives remaining shows the result of getting my arse kicked on the Alien level ...
By the time I clawed my way to the last level I had one life left. I picked up another, lost it, got another, lost it, and so I faced the final boss with the same miserable single life at the end. I have no idea how close I was to killing him; although judging by the remaining Destructo power in the bottom left corner, I guess I should have tried a more indirect approach.

Alright, this is my third and final go at this for a few weeks, so lets hope it's a good score...
Score: 2,578,400
I didn't bother to collect all the power-ups and extras this time (which give you score), or go out of my way to remove all the enemies; so I know I can do a bit better than this. I got to 5.1 with nine lives (like before) but walked out of it with nine lives, keeping them until the end of the game.
A further note: at the end of the game you get a game complete bonus, and all the crystals, and your remaining lives are multiplied to give you a final score. I got about 1.3 million before this bonus was added. Note: This final bonus screen only stays up for 2 seconds! (or it's a long wait to get to the high score table). |

Just a heads-up to those that haven't checked EAB that after some discussion we've decided that any areas that you can 'milk' points from (i.e. things that respwan indefinitely, until the time runs out but you can keep doing it for however many lives you have) are strictly forbidden. So can you please all avoid doing this on your playthroughs, thanks _________________ Lemon/EAB Super League 2013: Round 6 - Arcade Pool

You know, out of all the people who regularly join us, I thought 'TurricanX' would surely be great at this game. Go figure.. If you need any help or advice, or plain tactics, I'm more than happy to go into detail. I think once the player knows where all the lives are (and zig-zags their way around a level to collect them all) then the game is so much easier. Also, practice makes perfect... of course.
3.3 is my second favourite level in the whole game (after 3.2) - but it's fast! I find that if I stay to the far left it may be possible to just use up/down on the controller as soon as I see the tunnel changing direction. I think (if memory serves) there are four extra lives on the level, the first is below the platform (so go under all platforms until you find it) , the second two are together in the middle of a platform (requires coming up from below), and the fourth is above a platform near the end (swoop down on it). Did you get as far as the boss? |

3.3 is my biggest problem with this game, the platform parts and finding the lives is easier compared to this part, any lives I have collected in the previous levels are generally all wasted on the r-type section, by the time I get to the boss at the end I'm down to a couple of lives which isn't enough. I think if I can get past 3.3 I've got a good chance of finishing the game.
Thanks for the tips though, I'll give it another go! _________________ Check out my blog RGO below, latest post now up!

Excellent! The boss on 3.3 is the one in two halves right? I think I got that wrong before. Anyway, fly around the back of it for a while - the boss will open to reveal it's weak spot but it is hard to get to at first. Wait until it opens up the second time (as it moves to the centre of the screen), quickly take out the central section and then remove the upper and lower parts with a few blast waves. Good luck.

Didn't think it was my sort of game at first, like platforms but not shoot em ups. But have actually started to enjoy it and want to complete it now. |

| Take your time to explore the levels. There are a lot of extra lives to find which make this game much easier. |
