One of the few games I actually saved up my pocket for and bought! Thus I invested huge amounts of time playing this game back in the day and have even booted it up a few times over the years to have another stab at it.

This years competition is ending with some of my favourites, first xenonII and now Batman.

Maybe I'll head down the bookies and put something on you taking another gold. Smile

I'm wondering how many people got this in the pack when they bought their Amiga500? I know I did, so it was one of the first games I owned and played a lot.

Yeh, I guess the cartoon classics pack and the batman pack were the top two selling roots into amiga ownership.

As for me getting another gold (I'll have to check but that would probably be my best season ever) I think this round is likely to be hotly contested. I struggle on the batwing level more than any other for some reason.

Come on LA, let's finish the year strongly!

^ Nice to have you onboard Wink

Alright, this is becoming a cliche - but here are a few tips:

Batman General Tips:
Level 1: - There are multiple routes here to allow you to get to the end of the level, which I'll call the 'above' route and the 'below' route - with the 'above' route having fewer enemies so you can do the level quicker. If you get to the room at the top/centre of the map, this is a waypoint, and you'll restart from here (perhaps with a little less time) should you die before the end. It is generally advised to follow the enemies directly above or below them so that they cannot directly shoot you, and then to come up from below when they change their walking direction. It may also be possible to avoid granades by walking towards them(!) and ducking at the last moment. Hit Jack just once to knock him down into the acid stuff.

Level 2: - SPEEEEED is the issue. You will have just enough time to get to the end of the level - allowing for perhaps five or six small mistakes or one large one (e.g. crashing into the buildings), otherwise you're best bet is to get to the 50% mark (50 miles to go) to be able to restart from this point, should you die before the end. The waypoint means you must be extra careful to save health; whilst driving you're guts out to beat the time limit. You can save time by taking the first exits to your destination. Taking the second or third exits will cost you a degree of time, and you'll have a greater distance to travel. However, if there is an amount of traffic already blocking the first exit, it may be wiser to skip to the second exit if it means you can hit the corner at full speed (as slowing down for a corner and having to speed up again will also cost you time). Try to use the batmobiles brakes to your advantage. It is better to avoid a crash by braking rapidly rather than: hitting the back of someone, losing energy, losing time, virtually stopping, and having to speed up all over again. It may also help to ignore the timer and just zone-out on the road ahead.

Level 3: - Try to find three items which are NOT part of the formula as quickly as possible. The items to the right are less likely to the chosen than the ones in the left-hand column. Having found three 'blanks', you can then try a 'potential' item with two of your blanks. If it comes up with a '1' you know it's a 'match'. Repeat until you have discovered all three correct matches and then select those three. Job done.

Level 4: - It is better to go slow and steady here rather than too quickly or you'll miss a lot of balloons. The corners are quite sharp sometimes, so going too quickly will simply throw you into the brickwork. You get plenty of time and lots of energy, - so if you cruise steadily along - taking out almost every target (minus a few misses) - you'll be fine.

Level 5: - There are at least four routes to the top of this level - each very different - but there is at least two waypoints you can find during the level in case you die. Rats are virtually harmless, so just throw a rope up to get over them. If men or bullets are on screen, prioritise these over silly things like rats. There are a few spikes to get over, so look for pink patches above you which show swing points to hooking points. You may have to initiate a swing to a few platforms by pulling the stick left and right, then at the best swing height press fire to leap from the swinging rope in the direction you require. Enemies can still kill you even when swinging into their faces. When you get to the top, deal with the guys on the roof and then throw the batrope diagonal top/right as soon as you see the joker on the ladder. If you miss him, sorry pal.

From Graham on EAB

Quote:
Just a quick heads-up on a couple of things, thanks to capehorn.

Quote:

When you hit a roadblock on the car level you are supposed to lose a life. But I have found that if you are on your last life, hitting the roadblock restarts the level so you could replay it as many times as you wanted and rack up an infinite score.

So to avoid any score leeching issues, I think we should say that if this happens on your last life, you should stop playing there and then. Shame that this little bug crept in.

Also, the version linked to in the first post doesn't appear to work beyond level one, so this will be replaced with a two-disk version.

Ok, returning this thread to Batman (hopefully), here's my first score.

This is a game complete, and I only just fell short of my all-time personal best score, but still 311k. Good for starters...

Score: 311, 450

[edit: just tried again, not much better, I'll wait until I've got past my previous PB before I post again Wink]

Second go at this: (come on guys! Where is everybody??)

This time I cleared level 1 of guys no problem - I found there is plenty of time to go off track and clean out the level. On level 2 I almost beat it in one go, but died quite near the end. Starting from 50miles I dead almost at the line. Third go (last life) and I did level 2, then level 3 and then level 4 straight off. Level 5 - made it all the way to the top (gaining an extra life) but when I got to the roof I missed the Joker by a hair's breadth!! He disappeared! so I had to let the rats chew me out to continue. At last I made it and killed the Joker with all lives now gone.

Score: 340, 070

..I don't think I can do any more than this - I think this is as far as my talent will stretch on this game.

Only just got to the Cathedral before the Jokers Henchmen filled me with lead. I lost a life on the car level AND the Batplane level which left me with too little come the Cathedral. I forgot how hard the Cathedral level is!
