I'll have to give this game a rest, before I kick my pad and/or computer to the wall. If I hear someone saying 'sucker' this weekend, I'll go nuts. Evil or Very Mad

Just had my first decent go in terms of accumulating cash/weapons.

I had four lives, a decent weapon and around 2000 cash. So I bought an extra life in the shop thinking that it would be a cheaper way of getting armour (according to the tips in the thread), but I didn't seem to get any armour (no symbol on the side of the screen). So I bought two actual armours costing 600. Again, neither of them materalised.

I had plasma weapon (I think that's what it's called - the big white circles?) beforehand, but when I exited the shop I had the triple shot with purple bullets. So what on Earth happened? I spent a load of money and ended up in a worse situation with a worse weapon?

I am using the HDADF that LS posted.

After level 75 I started to think this is getting ridiculous, because you actually finish the game but the levels are starting to cycle again from level 1, or in this case; level 76, 151 etc.. But then I've noticed the same aliens from same cycling levels are getting much faster and shooting more and more rapidly, so the idea of possible infinite play was slowly fading away.
Even though if everything comes perfectly together as in run I've just made, where I got all 4 armours (there aren't invisible extra armors), the most powerfull weapon and few k's of money, I've was beginning to get hit so rapidly the money started to vanish slowly but steady, just for the armours.. And when you start to lose lifes and weapons degrading you know the end is near.
Perhaps after 2 and a half hours I was starting to get bored and just wishing to pause a game for today and continuing tomorrow but that's not aloud, of course..
So I've realized this could be the game where persistence could play a major role to whoever wins this round.

After killing the last Big Boss you start the game from the beginning but on the higher difficulty level. So if you started playing Normal, level 76 is level 1 but on Hard difficulty level. Level 151 is unfortunately still level 1 on Hard difficulty level Wink

Ye, thought it is something like that..

capehorn, no idea why this happened to you.. Some strange bug or I don't know what.. Hope it won't happen to you again, since you're using the same file as many of us.

That is VERY strange. I used the HD ADF for my first dozen plays and it worked flawlessly using the intructions provided (A1200 quickstart + 4meg fast). Never come across anything like what you mentioned. I can only assume you are playing under emulation and you haven't got an accellerator card which is messing things up? The tips are absolutely correct; buy four lives in the shop (or have four lives already) and the next life upgrade (or pickup) will actually be turned into armour. Chris has also confirmed this is working. I just played this game for an hour straight and thats what I did (and had to do!) to survive. Not sure what to suggest except to go back to basic Quickstart setup and try again. Perhaps there is an issue with some versions of WinUAE? I'm using version 2.0.1, but unless you have something exotic like 2.4.1c r2 beta then everything should be fine.

The only bugs I've found so far are sometimes the last letter of the bonus item name is missing as it scrolls on screen, and sometimes it's funny 'cus sometimes the womans voice also seems to be one letter short. (Extra Spee! , Extra Bulle!, Double Sho'!)

---

So I've just played this for about an hour. Got to level 43 and had 2.5 million. It was a crazy run as I managed to build up to plasma quite quickly, so when the cash sucker came along I could blow it up and get plenty of cash. But the most amazing thing was that for the first time I had lots of meteor storm drops; at least one every four levels - or sometimes even one after another on each new level. I went thru seven (7!!) meteor storms almost in a row in this play but only completed one of those (Sad) and got the 1000 cash. It was worth it to collect all those other bits of money floating around but otherwise I could have gotten a large score with the full 7k cash. But it was not to be. My hands are sweating like mad now. I got to level 43 with only the quad weapon and so I didn't last very long after that. That quad weapon is really lousy!

For me, one of the difficult parts is judging the speed. Collecting 4 or 5 speed pickups is necessary for the meteor storm but who else has found that the best speed in the meteor storm is often too fast in the levels?? So often I've upgraded, completed the meteors and then crashed straight into a bullet because I'm moving too fast. The reverse is also true, sometimes slow speed is great for weaving in between the bullets but is far too slow for the meteors. At one point last week I even bought a 'less speed' powerdown just to feel secure.

As you can see, I'm not one of the high scoring guys, but more than 3 speed pickups is way out of control for either meteorstorm or normal gameplay for me. You can even finish fullspeed meteorstorm with two speed upgrades.

Think I'll be lucky to repeat that performance anytime soon. Happy just to have beaten the little sucker of a game!

What a bunch of crap this is.. Suddenly game was corrupted, couldn't see text and numbers, including my score, couldn't see my fire and nothing in the shop. At first couldn't see even aliens, then I played in those conditions few more levels, at least my score became visible again before I died in this chaos. couldn't even write down my name on highscore table cause you couldn't see anything. Even title pages were corrupted and wanted to see if I start a new game if it will dissapear but no, still everything corrupt.

What a party poooper.

I've never known this game to be so buggy, i had a few issues with the latest WinUAE so i reverted to an older version. Seems alot of people have had problems.

On the plus side Seth, you smashed the league record. Shockingly high score.

I had a very similar problem once, all the sprites disappeared but it would still play. Then they return for a level, and went again when I collected a bonus. Very weird.

Great score Seth! I must have played this like 40 times now and I have yet to find one of these bugs. As Mike said it could be due to the latest versions of WinUAE messing things up. I've certainly noticed the latest UAEs are getting less and less compatible as new ones are developed. As for the HD ADF this is simply the aminet LHA on a disk, so there should be zero problems on the software side at least. Since Biscuit has reported this has also happened to him (and he isn't even using the HD ADF) I'd say it must be something to do with the emulator.

--
As for me, when I scored the 3 million it felt like a miracle. Scoring a good score shouldn't feel like a miracle at such an early stage or that doesn't say much for my playing. As it turns out, my playing sucks!
