GuyFawkesRetro - 2012-05-23 The first game I ever played on Amiga. I knew, even way back in 92 it was hard, but i just had to listen to the music, see the intro and witness the best death outro put to disk. View all comments (22) tertronostalgic - 2012-01-26 I agree with Dan Locke - Reflections made the game just way too hard and unfair to the average gamesplayer - or even the above average gamesplayer. It was never playtested properly... View all comments (141) apachacha - 2011-10-10 This game is pretty difficult, and can be very annoying at times, especialy how missing one single coin screws you over by the end, forcing you to restart. The enemy design is alright, but there's far less interesting enemies in this game then in it's predecessor, which simply blew me away with it's enemy design and colours. This is a bit drab, and it's kind of silly how you don't even get to see this kidnaped sister of yours, not even in the ending ! View all comments (102) Dan Locke - 2011-01-30 @Aurigon >To all those who claim it's too hard, just take a look to some longplay on YouTube... It can be beaten even without using all the health potions found through it. It's meaningless to say that Shadow of the Beast II has a reasonable difficulty level because there's a video on YouTube of someone beating it; YouTube is full of videos of people managing near-impossible feats. Yes, the game physically can be beaten, but that's an absolute best-case scenario, and you need to have the entire game memorized. If you don't play absolutely perfectly, you will lose. There is no excuse for Shadow of the Beast II's ridiculous design approach. View all comments (140) Aurigon - 2010-12-06 Never finished, it scared the hell out of me back then (I was 6 when it was released). View all comments (3) Bebokus - 2010-11-15 I can't even imagine playing this game on real amiga. Why so high notes? This game is almost impossible to finish, without dying every 10 sec, and those ridiculous puzzles. Barf, I hate this game! View all comments (89) Lord_Maletoth - 2010-08-12 Even more frustrating than the first episode, Shadow Of The Beast II is also graphically less impressive. It adds some arcade-adventure features, but, again, it's useless to play it without a cheat mode, and even with it you can easily find yourself in a deadend! Still, from time to time I enjoy playing it with my ten pints (eheh!). There's an overall sad atmosphere and the music is good. What I also enjoy is the talk option, which is very limited but can give funny results in certain cases (try asking to people about the bad guys Zelek, Ishran and Maletoth and see their reactions!). View all comments (49) James Junior - 2010-05-26 Just playing the music and looked at the starting sequence and it brings back memories - god it still really unsettles me and makes me squirm. It is horrible! View all comments (7) James Junior - 2010-05-26 As others have commented, this game was stupidly hard and virtually unplayable in its day. It was however a showcase for incredible graphics in it's day carries the trademark Psygnosis style of dark eerie fantasy. Used to scare the crap out of me as a kid actually and give me nightmares! If I remember rightly there was a cheat whereby if you walk over to a dude near the beginning and ask him about 'ten pints' it gives you infinite health. You can still quite easily die however by messing up the puzzles or falling into water! I remember my dad buying me this when it was first released - my game came with a black Shadow of the Beast T Shirt too bearing the design from the box art across the chest! Did anyone else have this? Kind of wish I had kept it now, might be worth a few quid... View all comments (7) habib23q - 2010-03-15 Not a bad game at all i also have the megadrive version but this is the least favourite SOTB game for me...stupidly hard but i did finish it eventually.. View all comments (62) RichardH - 2009-10-29 The hardest game I ever played. Today it may be possible to beat it without cheating by watching youtube videos, but back then, this game was essentially unplayable. Strange that they did this after Part 1 which was already hard. Anyways SOTB 1-3 are all classics due to their great graphics and sound. View all comments (19) Dan Locke - 2009-09-28 Stunningly beautiful, but so unfair that you're really better-off not playing. The mace is too weak and unwieldy to be effective against the hordes of regenerating enemies, the "puzzles" are impossible to solve without a walkthrough and are stupidly easy to screw up permanently (literally every puzzle can end in an unwinnable situation if the player doesn't do EXACTLY the right thing at EXACTLY the right time, neither of which are ever apparent except in the vaguest sense), and there's only one life, the loss of which results in a game-over sequence that takes forever to load. It's sad that the ethereally beautiful graphics and music, along with the innovative features like the character interactions and continuous world, are wasted on such a terrible game. View all comments (27) radioman970 - 2008-04-04 Yeah, it was a hard one, just like the first game. But I managed to get through quite a few bits. By no means did I even get close to finishing it though. Still, I got my money's worth on this. The intro floored me. One of the most amazing things I'd seen up to the time. Very scary stuff. And I watched that death screen over and over and over and over and still love the guitar licks that seemed to be mocking me more than anything else. A very memorable experience back in the day. I'd say overall better than the first game. Keep trying if you don't get far. Just...do. 9/10 View all comments (279) gompedyret - 2007-11-23 Amazing visuals and atmosphere, but alas, I never played it much due to it's difficulty level. View all comments (31) herbalicious - 2007-09-28 This is my review for shadow of the beast 2, its the best game ever , graphics 10-10, gameplay 10-10, quality 10-10. Do not accept anything less , beast 2 achieved perfection back in 1990, anything else is merely an imitation. Im sure that even the haters amongst us understand that deep down . View all comments (3) cioran53 - 2007-09-25 This sequel was far from being as revolutionnary than the first Beast. To my mind, it was also not as attractive because of less colourful graphics. But the game itself was deeper, more interesting and certainly as difficult. Almost impossible to finish without the cheats and the hints. A good game though because it was a strange mix between the first Shadow of the Beast and a classic adventure game. The dialogs with NPC was quite new at the time for an action game. A far from perfection fascinating game . View all comments (37) tokyoracer - 2007-09-20 Beautiful music from Tim and the video was very impressive and scary. We are mere mortals put on this earth for one reason, to try and complete shadow of the beast 2 before we are dead. View all comments (3) richmarkhill - 2007-07-27 This is without doubt the highlight of the beast trilogy. Having more depth than it's predecessor with regards to puzzle solving and having the ability to interact with characters. The atmosphere is incredible, a feat which the other entries fail to capture. Judging from the voting system at the moment it's regarded as the least accomplished, which is a great shame 'cause I have nothing but great memories for this Masterpiece. View all comments (13) ItsNotAllWalking - 2006-10-15 Psygnosis did it again with the graphics, and the superb atmosphertic intro, but after the first game the wow factor had worn off and players wanted a bit of gameplay substance with their graphics, sadly for me it didn't happen here and the game was infuriatingly hard, so hard I never really got a chance to see much of it, a shame, as these guys could seriously program. Another game I still remember fondly for the graphics and intro, but the gameplay seriously let this one down, too hard. View all comments (14) witchdoktor - 2006-10-09 Ten Pints! View all comments (26) Killbot - 2006-08-17 Not a bad game by any means but yet another Amiga title ruined by a ridiculous difficulty level. The responsive controls, lush graphics and sound and excellent level design are all for nought, as with only one life and a small energy bar against the hordes of enemies the game throws at you the vast majority of people are never going to see more than 5% of what's on offer. If Psygnosis had decided to give you a few more lives or a couple of continues this would have been an absolute must-have. As it is it's an interesting idea crippled by a major flaw. 3/10 View all comments (24) squap - 2006-07-19 That this was the best game in the 'screen gems' Amiga pack is a terrible indictment of the other games (nightbreed, days of thunder and bttf2 - all barf). Looked beautiful but thoroughly impossible. Even with the cheat mode (immortality) it was still nearly impossible as the puzzles were often one chance jobs rather than trial and error. View all comments (94) Arsace - 2006-07-14 The last SOTB in my opinion (I just do not consider SOTBIII, I hate it). It is playable (i completed it with no cheat, I had the original version), I think SOB (I and II) are just a sort of Art-Experience, not just games... I still regret to have sold-out my boxes (with no disks for 10E!) they just deserved to be put on your bibliotheque as Collectionist-Object as a Ming-porcelain... The expression of a sublimated nightmere 9.2/10 as a game, 10/10 as an Art Experience (and as Art-Experience I mean the game with its first long version box and the manuals on your desktop, and the presentation showing on your monitor) View all comments (147) Laffer - 2006-05-22 As you can see in the review, I think it's an excellent game and very underrated.. It seems many people consider it an unplayable Amiga tech demo That couldn't be further away from the truth, the game is very playable and addictive. View all comments (10) z00mba - 2006-05-04 This one was much more easy to finish than the first episode. The main character responding very well, so you wouldn't die because of some weird manipulation. Yes they were some frustrating parts; like you forget an object or to do a special action at a special time and you are screwed. Anyway the game was beatable without any cheats (some energy potions being placed at strategics places in the game). The mix between puzzle/adventure/action is really great. And of course great graphics, sound and animation, and a superb design! View all comments (79) Super Nashwan - 2006-05-03 I’m probably in the minority, but I believe some games are worth playing just for the intros and death scenes. This game has one of the most spooky and filmic intros ever on a 16-bit machine. The overall atmosphere has the ability to transport you to another world, much like the feeling you get when watching Starwars for the first time. The environments look so other worldly with their claw-like rock formations, their combination of medieval looking creatures and hi-tech machinery. Even the box art with it’s surreal alien landscapes lets you know you’re in for something unique. Most games use the tried and tested clichés of orcs, goblins and elves and such. This game, on the other hand, casts an unspecified beast as the HERO no less! It has the most magical death sequence ever. I don’t think any player can fail to be moved by the ethereal fantasy artwork and anguished guitar solo. Even the title screen with it’s ambient panflute track and mysterious imagery adds dimensions to the game. One minor detail I love is the fact that though the Beast was reverted to human form at the end of the first game, you still see Beast bones when he dies. Apparently, it can be completed without the cheat, but only if you feel you don’t have enough pain in your life. A tragic flaw in an otherwise highly impressive product. View all comments (50) Little Monkey Lost - 2006-04-16 I got this and was slightly dissappointed because I was just nine years old and could not pass very far. Though I later spent lots of time this after getting a solution. I could not complete this game anyway. I don't even remember did I manage to defeat that dragon. But what is really the problem is that you cannot skip the death sequence. That really sucks! (and you can't skip intro either!). Of course long loading times are stupid too, this could have been partially overcome by utilizing 1mb memory (assuming the game does not already do this). It is a thrilling idea to think how far I would have got if I had had a little bit more courage. Despite of the difficulty the game has a great mood. Most of platformer and arcade-adventure games are far too easy anyway. Perhaps being too hard is a smaller problem. View all comments (248) Stomperud - 2006-03-21 Whoaa! Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Whose idea was it to make it hideously, hideously difficult and preposterously unfair in places. Why did beast-bloke only have one life when giving him three would have improved the playability no end whilst still making the game a challenge? And why, when the game was converted to the Sega Megadrive, were almost-none of these faults (mentioned in many reviews) fixed? A wasted opportunity. Still, that music eh? View all comments (145) Rolex - 2005-04-13 I remember the first time I tried this game. I was with a friend, and after the intro had finished we just looked at eachother, totally freaked out. View all comments (3) starvingwriter82 - 2005-02-25 I think the last commenter was a little bit harsh, concerning the difficulty level of Beast II. Yes, the game is difficult. Insanely difficult by today's standards... Perhaps in the top 5 of most difficult games I've ever completed. However, to say that the game is unplayable without a cheat code is nowhere near accurate. Spending a little while with the control system and familiarizing yourself with different areas will make most "action" sections of the game passable, if not downright easy - it's the puzzles that will give this game hours and hours of gameplay. I don't know... Perhaps many people have been spoiled by today's unlimited-continues hard-if-not-impossible-to-die videogame era. If you want a game like that, there are plenty out for PS2 or any newer system. If you want a game that is a genuine challenge, a game that can make you feel like you will never win, and then you want to triumph where so many other gamers could not - try Beast II. View all comments (51) lux - 2005-02-20 Simple comment: from a technical point of view: 9/10, from the playability point of view: 2/10 due to its "over-any-reasonable" difficulty level. (average game lasts less than 1 minute without cheating) Result: 6/10 if you play (and you MUST do it) with the in game cheat (ten pints...), in order to progress further in the game and having the chance to enjoy its beatiful arcade/adventure/puzzle solving features and good ideas and astonishing GFX sperad oll over the game. Maybe they were master gamers and wanted to make games for their own enjoyment. View all comments (201) cadaver - 2005-01-27 This game has cool premise with more adventure elements and the conversation system, which is quite underused sadly. The game manual mentions buying weapons but that's not in the game, instead you just need all the money you can collect for a certain puzzle.. The nonlinearity introduces bugs the programmers didn't care to squish: sometimes important characters disappear if you go off the screen at the wrong moment. Also, requires at least 2x level of masochism compared to the first Beast. Still, good points are the music and total otherworldly feeling. Few games have that... I fell completely in love with the first Beast game: for me, it was the perfect showdown of what the Amiga could do. I could stare at the title screen and listen to the music for hours. But this one...well, it really let me down. First of all, the new main character was a delusion. Second, the puzzle elements just stood in the way. IMO they only destroyed the continuity of the action. The dialogue system was sooo bad and useless. The extra technical jaw-dropping bits that made Beast so special (eg. The infamous parallax scrolling) were left out. The first Beast was rock hard, sure, but with perseverance you could get to the end - I did. And it was well worth my time. This, on the contrary, was just unforgiving. Oh yes, the graphics were amazing. So they were in Sword of Sodan, but that's not enough for a good game. I expected more from Reflections. Nuff said.
