Gods 1991, Renegade

The best platform game I have ever played. The Bitmap Brothers finest hour? Maybe, just maybe.

The first thing that strikes you when you load this one up is the intro music. Wow, if you've never heard it, you have no idea what I am talking about. If you have, I need say no more! Nation XII (John Foxx) created a tune that would make Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart cream his pants!

Ok, maybe that's slight of an exaggeration, but it's bloody good!

Once you start the game you will notice the beautiful crisp graphics. Environments, sprites, colours and textures are pixel perfect. The shear amount of beautifully crafted items, weapons and worlds for that matter will keep you in eye candy land for decades.

The sound effects are also worth a mention here. The way they synchronize the sprite animations down to the last frame of a dropping crystal, or your weapon hitting a solid object is truly a work of art and far from a coincidence.

The puzzle and battle systems are truly fantastic, if not a tad too clever for their own good. The more you try and thrash the game, the harder it hits you back. Play like a novice and the game will tease and tempt you to take risks, giving you the odd nudge here and there, maybe a extra help bonus, or less enemy aggression, just little, but not too much. I would compare the AI to being with a good woman. Treat her with respect, and she will reward with an enjoyable experience. Treat her rough, slap her about too much, and your going to be in a whole lot of pain before you make it to the second world.

It's full of secrets, hidden treasure rooms and a massive array of weapons.

Puzzles here are not too complex. You know what you have to do while beating down bizarre hordes creatures of awesome quality and imagination.

It's also worth to mention that there's no end to this game. Once you complete the four worlds, you start over again, with your current score and lives intact, but it gets a whole lot harder! This gives you an opportunity to find any secret bonuses you may have missed, or retry leaver combinations to gain access to hidden areas you didn't work out the first time.

This game is truly one for all platform gaming gods! The Amiga version in my honest opinion is by far the best of all the versions. This game needs to be in the Top 10. Get voting!
