I remember being 10 or 11 years old and playing Roadblasters at the arcades on holidays in a small town call Forster in Australia. I could never beg my parents for enough money to keep on playing this game, and have had such fond memories of it that I haven't forgotten it today!
Roadblasters is, literally, a car racing game where you shoot and kill other things. However, there is a twist, as it seems to be set in some futuristic post apocalyptic time. You, of course, are the driver of a car that has to make it to the end of each stage. Like in an arcade. Remember?
In the above picture, an air vehicle of some kind is giving you a weapon. This happens once per stage - it flies over you, and drops a weapon on your car for you to use. Well, it's not only weapons... you can get Nitro Injection (for higher speeds) or an Electro Shield (which protects you from dying). Other things are the L.Z. Cannon, and, my favourite, the Cruise Missile.
While travelling about, you will also spot green or red balls on the road. You need to pick these up as they contain fuel. It is often hard to pick them up though, as you need to dodge mines on the road, shoot motorcyclists, dodge puddles of water, and try not to get shot by the bunker type things that are on the side of the road.
A word of warning - you can't shoot the purple cars. These have electro shielding. In addition to that, they also have some seriously killer AI, and will actually try to get in your way. Most annoying! The other annoying thing is when the 4 off road buggies come from behind you, and then go in front of you and hit their brakes! Really hard to avoid!

For a conversion, the graphics aren't too bad, however the arcade version is a lot better. The Amiga version does whip the C64 version though. The road is well rendered as are the backgrounds and all of the enemies. It's nothing too impressive, but you can't get too impressive with a straight conversion of a car game... can you?

Good work on the sound, it's accurate to the arcade as well. There isn't anything particularly special to mention apart from that it's serviceable and does what it is supposed to do. It would be rather disappointing if it didn't!

There are a lot of levels in this game, and I imagine I would have spent thousands of dollars trying to get past them all if my parents had been that well off. It is basically exactly the same throughout - you drive, you shoot, you get fuel, you get to the end. Repeat. I didn't find the Amiga version overly hard compared to the arcade version either, so not all that much longevity.

| Roadblasters is a racing game for the destructive human being - a hell of a lot of fun, while also being quite difficult at the same time! It's worth a play or three for pure nostalgia sake! |
