Ghostbusters II 1990, Activision
It was back in 1984 when a movie named Ghostbusters hit the cinemas. The very same year a great classical game also named Ghostbusters (because it was based on the movie) came out. It was a great game which still has a lot of appeal today. Then 5 years later a sequel to the movie came out. The game also got its sequel. Unfortunately it was nowhere near the success of the first part (neither the movie, nor the game).

The game tries to follow the plot of the movie (but there are many things they simply leave out). The shortened story line tells us of the baby incident at the beginning of the movie, which convinced the team to dig a hole in the middle of a road and go down to collect some slime. Here is where the first playable sequence starts.

Although there was nothing in the movie that prevented Ray from going down, the game changed this. You need to go descend into the hole, avoid or shoot anything that means you harm (there are certain things to collect that will make this slightly easier), collect a sample of slime (without being pulled into the river of slime running below the city) and return back to the surface.

The task is quite difficult; it's definitely difficult enough to put most players off playing the game. You'd really have to be a hard core gamer or Ghostbusters fan (like I am) to try and successfully finish this level, so most people will either give up trying or use a cheat (if they can find one).

Then a huge part of the plot is missing. You've just skipped through the most of the movie (from the pre-scene, right down to the grand finale). And you're in control of the Statue of Liberty. All who watched the movie will remember the guys had to bring the statue down to the museum of arts. It was a symbol of all that's good and descent left in New York, so the people of good will could rally behind it and break the cast of bad-mood slime around the museum. But if you remember the movie, you'll also know their walking of the statue (with an exception of flattening a police car) was uneventful. The game says otherwise.

There are evil spirits attacking you and you need to fight them back. You'll also need to collect their slime in order to keep the Statue powered up. If you run out of slime, you'll come to a halt. I can understand a need for an action scene in an action game, but this is neither interesting, nor connected to the movie. This playable sequence is a complete miss (the first one was at least a way to follow the movie).

And once you finally succeed in bringing Lady Liberty to the museum, you need to get in there, save the baby and stop Vigo: the sorrow of Moldavia, the scourge of Carpathia. This again follows the plotline of the movie at least. Unfortunately this sequence means you'll need to run around the museum and try to find and weaken enough (by zapping) the ultimate bad guy. It's not really interesting, nor is it really good.

All in all, this game is one of the bigger fiascos ever. They simply took three parts of the movie and tried to add some action to it, hoping this would make a great game. So as much as the first part is a timeless classic, this second part is a timeless shame. And if a hard-core Ghostbusters fan says that, then you know the game has to be rotten!

Review Summary
GRAPHICS: 7 / 10
The graphics are good (about the only good thing about this game really). The game has characters from the movie in it and they are easily recognizable (Ray's face while descending down the hole is actually funny to watch).

SOUND: 5 / 10
The great Ray Parker's tune has been re-done once again. Unfortunately there seems to be a glitch and it just loops around the beginning of the song.

PLAYABILITY: 2 / 10
The game is almost unplayable. The horrid first level/sequence is so darn hard. Most of you will give up. If by any chance you'll linger on long enough, you'll see that the first level/sequence wasn't half bad, seeing how the rest of the game is completely lousy.

OVERALL: 3 / 10
This game is a big disappointment. It's simply not fun to play. The only thing that does have some appeal is the title. If you really want a good Ghostbusters 2 game, go out and get the PC version (they didn't port this game for PC, they made a completely different game - one that is actually above average).
