Secret of Monkey Island, The 1991, US Gold
Everybody has a dream of what they want to be when they grow up. This one clumsy kid had a dream of becoming a PIRATE. I'm talking about Guybrush Treapwood and his adventure: The Secret of Monkey Island!

Upon arriving on a Caribbean island, Guybrush wishes to join a crew of one of the pirate captains. Unfortunately they are not impressed with this little kid and his ability to hold breath underwater for ten minutes. Thus they send him on a dangerous quest.

While trying to complete the quest Guybrush meets the beautiful governor Marley and naturally falls in love with her (after all, you can't have an epic adventure without a story of true yet unhappy love).

The problem is, that the ghost pirate LeChuch also plans to be with Ms. Marley and kidnaps her. It is now up to you to go to the Monkey Island and rescue the love of your life.

Just remember that in order to defeat the ghostly forces against you, you'll need some magic powers of your own as well.

Needless to say the story has a happy ending, but only if you're skilful enough.

This game is the first in the very successful LucasArts series. There have been four parts made so far and the story could still continue. The game uses the SCUMM system originally developed for Maniac Mansion (also by LucasArts). It is a point 'n click adventure at its finest. The characters we get to know in this part will reappear all thorough the series in the most unexpected places. The humour of the series is extraordinary. The combat system where you need to think of insults and appropriate responses to them instead of having an action system is legendary.

The Secret of Monkey Island can easily be considered a milestone in the gaming history. It was among the games that really placed the adventure genre above the rest of the gaming experiences. Too bad Ron Gilbert's Monkey Island started loosing its charm in the fourth game Escape from Monkey Island.

The first game concludes with the love scene between Guybrush and his beloved governor Marley, yet the mystery of the Monkey Island was never solved.

Review Summary
GRAPHICS: 10 / 10
The game features great graphics. There are also some excellent close-ups of people you can interact with, so that you can really see their facial expressions.

SOUND: 10 / 10
The sound really sets the mood. It has a ska rhythm that reminds you of the Caribbean and the effects, although not numerous, are really dead on the spot.

PLAYABILITY: 9 / 10
This is perhaps the only "flaw" of the game. It is an adventure, so every time you play it will be the same. There are only so many things you can discover before it gets repetitive. Still the great humour of the game will give you pleasure upon replaying it over and over again, even if you know the outcome of the game by heart.

OVERALL: 10 / 10
This game is a true gem. It is computer gaming "par exellance". It will challenge you, make you laugh, have you hooked on it and leave you begging for more when you finish it. If ever there was a game made, for which one could say was perfect, this game has got to be it!
