Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge 1992, US Gold
Everybody has undoubtedly heard of The Secret of the Monkey Island. It's a game no one could get enough off, and that's why a sequel was made. But how do you follow up on a story where the villain was already dead and you just disposed of his ghost as well? Find out in...

The plot starts out with the ever clumsy Guybrush Threepwood dangling on a rope. Well, that's where you come in and get a nice long flashback (the main part of the game).

Actually the story starts with you - Guybrush boring your fellow pirates at the campfire, by retelling the same old story over and over again. Finally he realizes that there's a new adventure he needs to embark on, so he's off to find the legendary "Big Whoop" treasure.

There are four parts of the map you need to collect and in order to do so, you'll need to:

- bring people back from the dead

- drink a drunk under the table

- get out of jail

- nail Stan into a coffin (don't worry, he'll pop back out of it in the next part)

- win a spitting competition

- listen to tall fishermen's lies

And just when you think you found the treasure - the flashback ends and the story continues!

So how does LeChuck fit into all this?

You'll foolishly loose LeChuck's beard (the souvenir from your fight with him in the previous part) and his henchmen will be able to resurrect his zombie. So in fact you'll be facing a zombie of the ghost of the terribly evil pirate LeChuck.

You'll find yourself in a very strange place, where you'll discover the terrible truth about yourself, your family and the reality of it all!

As an adventure game, part two is more challenging then the original Monkey Island. It's a longer adventure game with somewhat cleverer puzzles. The graphics have been slightly improved, but there's no big change sound wise. The gameplay is still the same, with the point & click interface. The humour (the main ingredient of the success of the Monkey Island) is also still there (just imagine a wrench made out of a hypnotized monkey - a monkey wrench).

So even if the game has kept most of the qualities and was even improved in some aspects, there's still something missing.

Apart from the sword-fight insults, the game seems somewhat disappointing. I guess it's because of the ending. It's really not what one would expect. Why has Ron Gilbert decided on such an ending we'll never know. Was he trying to finish the series (so no further sequel would be made), was he trying to take it to a different level (so no more Caribbean pirates would be involved), was he just plain weird? I'm afraid we'll never know.

The story did continue though, but some things started feeling out of place - unfortunately.

Review Summary
GRAPHICS: 8 / 10
Nicely done, but I don't understand why Guybrush changed so much.

SOUND: 10 / 10
They still keep you in the mood and make you wanna be a squash buckler.

PLAYABILITY: 8 / 10
Again, it's a straight forward adventure game. There isn't enough variation, but the humour makes the game replayable (not so much as the first part though).

OVERALL: 9 / 10
A good sequel to a great game. It's hard to follow up something as grand as The Secret of the Monkey Island, but I think this game did a good job of it!
