Shadow of the Beast 2 continues the story about the warrior messenger (the guy you control). Now that he has confronted Zelek and won (in the first game), Maletoth is very displeased with Zelek. Anyway, Zelek hears about your newborn baby sister and decides to kidnap her and make her the new warrior messenger.
The game drops you right into the land of Karamoon without any clear objectives other than to save your sister from Zelek...you'll have to figure out everything else yourself.
This can seem like a daunting task at first as you have no clue where to go and what to do. I've heard people complain about that, but I think it's pretty cool...it's fun to try to figure it out and very rewarding once you learn in what order you should do everything.
The action in this game is really fun. It's a 2D side-scroller (scrolls in both directions) and you meet some really cool, well drawn, big and imaginative enemies...often many at the same time. They're not very annoying either since the controls are good and accurate.
This is not a pure action game though, there are some puzzles as well. Occasionally, you meet other friendly characters who you talk to or offer them stuff. This is very simplistic but kind of fun as you can ask about the main characters of the game and stuff like that.
The puzzles can be a little unfair at times though - especially since if you don't do everything in the right order, chances are you will have left behind an item and often you cannot backtrack - meaning that you'll have to start over.
There are also places in which only get a few seconds to solve a puzzle or you'll die.. and have to start over from the beginning again.
It's not really a big deal as the game is not very long and it does not take long to get there again from the beginning.
The graphics in this game are just amazing.. smooth scrolling at 50 frames per second through the entire game, even when there are several enemies on screen. The scrolling is smooth as silk and has two layers (much less than the first game in the series which had lots of layers, but I prefer how it is in this game as this allowed them to create much more detailed enemies).
Your opponents are also very well drawn...and often big too. The game just oozes style all the way through.
Musically, the game is just as good. It has some amazing tunes that really transport you into the world of Karamoon. The sound effects are also good enough but not as special as the music.
The music and graphics combined really draw you into this world, it's amazingly atmospheric.
All in all, I think this is an excellent game, in fact it's one of my favourite Amiga games. It's gotten some undeserved bad ratings in various places but try the game for yourself and chances are you'll really love it.
Don't listen to the reviews saying that this game is impossible - it's perfectly doable and after you've played it for some time, it can actually become quite easy.
Highly recommended!!

Incredibly good soundtrack...all the tunes in the entire game are good.
The game over sequence tune is just brilliant with an electric guitar sample and other stuff.
Really draws you into the world.

Very good gameplay...good and accurate controls, good difficulty level (even though it can seem too hard at first), cool puzzles...all in all great playability.
The reason it only gets 8/10 is that the game becomes impossible if you do stuff in the wrong order...not a biggie though.

| One of the coolest Amiga platform/puzzle games I've ever played. Quality from the beginning to the end, close to perfection :) |
