Garrison is a gauntlet clone -- yet strangely, it's better than the real Amiga Gauntlet.
The real Gauntlet is fun but ultimately mindless. Garrison adds strategic depth by giving you all five characters, but forcing you to choose just ONE to enter each dungeon with (you can choose a subsequent character if you get killed).
As all the dungeons are different (some have ranged shooters, some have fast monsters, some have strong guys, some have puzzles) suddenly you have to plan ahead - and it takes experience before you know the best character for a particular dungeon. As characters die, your selection becomes more and more limited. Levels are presented at random after the first 2, so you don't get bored playing the same sequence over and over again... and finally there are secret areas and surprises, and special creatures you only see in unique dungeons... has anyone else seen the dragon?
As each character dies, they achieve their own individual high score, and when all your characters are dead you achieve a combined high score, so the replay value is high, as even if you never complete the game (I never did -- never got much beyond the 20th level) you still enjoy trying to top your own scores. Finally, you can also play multiplayer -- the dungeons are even tougher, but each of you have 5 characters to play with, so you can choose different combinations to attack particular dungeons with.
All this, combined with MUCH better graphics and sound than the official Gauntlet, makes Garrison my all-time favourite Amiga game.
Garrison 1 is better than Gauntlet 1 or 2, and Garrison 2 is better again. If you like Gauntlet, you must try Garrison... both of them!

Better than the official Gauntlet. Don't be put off by the plain first dungeon, as you get further in they get more interesting and textured.

Really great. Lots of different sounds effects. The music is great, especially the guitar solo at the start of the game.

You can play again and again to beat your own combined score or the individual character scores.
