North & South 1989, Infogrames

North & South takes us back to the 1800's during the Civil War: North vs. South in the United States of America. You choose to be either North (blue) or South (grey). You must choose a side and lead them to victory!
In 2-player mode both of you pick each side and fight against each other. The game works in a more comic than realistic way, which I think works perfectly.

Starting the game:
The screenshot above is shown when you are ready to start a game. On the upper left and the upper right you can see two men. One in blue and one in grey. Clicking on the background (behind them) allows you to decide if you want North and South to be human or computer players. Between them there are six other options you can choose between: (I'll start from upper left)

1. Picture of an Indian: If you have chosen to have this on, there will be Indians on the north western part of the U.S.A. They may sometime attack your soldiers. (There are also some Mexican bandits in the south west)
2. Lightning: If you choose this option, there will be a thundercloud placed on the map. It will move to another state each round and if some of your soldiers are standing on that state, they can't move that round.
3. Ship: If you own one of the states to the east, it may come a ship from time to time from Europe with soldiers that can help you.
4. You either see a picture of a magician or a guy bored as hell with a chessboard. If you choose the guy with the chessboard, the battles will be skipped and it's randomly chosen who wins. (The player with most soldiers has of course biggest chance to win) But choose the magician! The game isn't the same without the battles!
5. You have four years to choose between. The amount of soldiers and states you own are different from which year you choose.
6. The last picture allows you to decide if one of the players want to use the keyboard instead of the joystick.

When you are ready to start the game, press the briefcase that says "GO".
And just for fun, you can "click" on the photographer's butt. Hilarious! Unforgettable! Who came up with that idea!?

How to win:
It's really simple. When your enemy doesn't have any more soldiers left on the map, you've won.
Try to own some of the states that has the "red dot" on the "train line". The train will pass from one of the dots to the other dot. You will then earn money and can buy more soldiers to your side.

The Battlefield:
When moving your soldiers to a state where your enemy's soldiers are, there will be war and a battlefield from a helicopter view will be shown on the screen. There are three types of soldiers you have on the battlefield:

1. Cannons: They will always stay at the very back. Try to aim on your enemies, they will always be killed when hit by a cannonball! You can also use the cannon to blow up the bridge if you think that is a good idea. (If you're playing against computer, it's a good idea.) Do know that the cannons only has a small amount of cannonballs. When they don't have any more left, they won't be able to help you anymore during the battle.
2. Horses: They are fast and good. They only has swords so you need to have them right beside your enemy if they should be useful.
3. Soldiers with muskets: You have many of them and they can stand from a good distance and shoot.
The side who has soldiers left is the winner.

Capturing a Fort:
It can be a good idea to capture one of your enemy's fort. If you succeed, your enemy has a train station left and will earn less cash. But capturing a fort is very hard. You race against time and the fort is heavily guarded.

Robbing a train:
If some of your soldiers is on the "train line" between two forts own by the enemy, you can try to rob the train. You will receive the money instead of your enemy.

Good luck! I hope you win or this sad screenshot will be shown:

...But if you win: this happy screenshot will be shown:

That's all I need to say! I you haven't played this game yet, do so now!
Good luck and may your side win! It's either "HOORAY YANKEE!" or "HOORAY DIXIE!"

Review Summary
GRAPHICS: 8 / 10
The graphics are wonderful.
All the soldiers are lively on the battlefield while moving.

When capturing a fort or robbing a train, you are then even "closer" to the soldiers and the graphics are just as great. Well done!

SOUND: 8 / 10
The sound and music has a very important part in this game.
Most of the sound effects are hilarious. North & South wouldn't be the same without them.

PLAYABILITY: 10 / 10
This game is great fun. Both on 1 and 2-player mode. 2-Player mode is of course the most fun part. For some reason you can never forget the moments you are playing this with a friend. This game is a perfect choice if you're looking for a good laugh with your friends.

OVERALL: 10 / 10
Nope, North & South isn't overrated. This game deserves it's reputation.
