I remember when this game was released, I remember the demos... I remember the football version of this where my dreams came true and I could FINALLY shoot Peter Beardsley in the face. I remember the army getting all annoyed with the "war can be fun" poster and the poppy motif. I remember the blood and the pain.. and the suffering of a thousand little guys you grew to love. I remember the fodder...
The poppy signature that caused so much trouble
This could easily have been the greatest game idea ever, it caused members of a certain amiga magazine to leave.. just so they could be part of this. We all wanted this game every single one of us, the release date was amazing.. seeing people queuing up to get this game, people wanting a piece of the action and why? Not just the publicity given by the sun newspaper who thought they were going to ruin the game by saying 'ohhhh its so bad and so evil'.. but the fact that the game was so evidently playable.
And as the title said; War really was so much fun.
Here we go guys.. too war!!!!
You start out with a group of 100 men walking slowly around a hill, to a rousing theme tune, and you take your little platoons off into a helicopter as the levels load and have to complete set tasks to get in and out of the jungle. Rewards came with surviving as long as possible, the better the soldiers rank the further he could shoot, the faster the team would run and so on and so forth, it was keeping the little buggers alive that was the difficult part.
We are talking full on Veitnamesque action here folks. There are pitfalls and trip wires and nutters in jeeps running you over, and the ever omnipotent chopper.. that would plague you constantly until you finally grenade the damn thing out of the sky. These traps and surprises made the game ever more interesting and at the same time frustrating, there is nothing worse than reaching the end of a level only to be blown up by a snowman.
MAN DOWN!
But you too had things on your side, capabilities to commandeer jeeps and choppers yourself, most of the time they were an integral part of the plot line and were needed to complete certain missions.. and on the subject of missions.. there was more than enough of these babies to get through. By around mission 10 they were really taxing the brain and your patience, but the great thing about this game is that you wanted to keep going and going. Never give up, never give in and keep trying until you finally reached your objective... and got to watch your little guys jumping up and down and waving to a rousing fanfare.
X-mas was never like this where I live
So Cannon Fodder.. one of the single most atmospheric games on the Amiga and yet another mile stone in its success.. this game could be one of the first real time strategy titles. I'm not sure.. but I am sure that it was definitely the BEST real time strategy game of its time and there's still a lot of gameplay underneath its chasse.
Get this game if you can.. because it's well worth it as is its sequel, which I haven't seen here yet, but I'm sure it will turn up sooner or later, both of these games seminal classics of the Amiga generation. I'm still honoured to have been allowed to play it when it first turned up, this is the sort of game you show to your kids 20 years on and tell them with a tear in your eye.. they don't make 'em like this anymore.. how true.

| Maybe the best game ever written for the Amiga. It's definitely top 10, well worth digging out for another go.. a classic of our time. |
