Striker No. 9 1990, Impressions
I remember seeing this in the shops... "wow, that looks great". I loved football games and this was a newish take on the football genre. The idea of controlling one player, the striker, and progressing through a football career and moving up the divisions, just appealed to me. There was no way this game could disappoint.

Intro Screen

The aim is very simple, score goals and get a transfer to a better team. Keep doing this and you move up the divisions. Between each match you get to participate in different training sessions. This is where the game starts to fall apart. The training sessions are very repetitive, some are very easy and some are near impossible, none are interesting. They consist of things such as complete 5 overhead kicks, score 5 penalties, run around some cones.

Throw in training. Throw the ball as far as possible!

How well you do in the training sessions determines if you get picked to play in the next match. If you get picked you then get some chances to score (usually 2 or 3 in each match). It’s very difficult to score in the matches and the controls are poor. Every time you to shot at goal, the ball just seems to flop off your foot. Getting a shot on target is an achievement in itself.

The Bank Manager

After each match up pops a picture of your bank manager who tells you what you have made that week. The whole process then repeats. In between all of this the coach, who sports a nice flat cap, barks at you (literally) in order to motivate you through your career.

Free kick training, learn to bend it like Beckham

That's about it, nothing else seems to happen. I reviewed this game because I wish it was great. Unfortunately it’s worse than I remember!

Review Summary
GRAPHICS: 5 / 10
Adequate, everything looks as it should, but none of it is ground breaking.

SOUND: 3 / 10
The same annoying tune throughout, and the coach seems to bark like a dog when he speaks!

PLAYABILITY: 4 / 10
After about 10 minutes you realise that you can't take anymore of the poor controls and repetitive training games.

OVERALL: 4 / 10
A promising idea that is executed in a disappointing fashion.
