Chaos Engine, The 1993, Renegade

I remember back in the early 90's even before the actual game was released I played a demo-version of "The Chaos Engine" that came on a disk from an Amiga magazine. I thought the game was incredible! I must have played it hundreds of time even tough it's just one level and you can only play two of the six playable mercenaries. The demo also showed some screenshots of what would be included in the full game. Those screenshots made me SO jealous! I wanted it so much! I wanted to try all the other mercenaries! I wanted to play all the levels! But now, I can proudly say I have the game and I play it religiously!

The awesome shopping section!

An inventor named Baron Fortesque created a powerful machine called The Chaos Engine! But the engine became too powerful and went crazy, turned every humans and creatures into monsters. Only six strong mercenaries can stop it!

The Brigand and the Mercenary

It is your choice to hire two of the six mercenaries to stop the Chaos Engine. You either play this game with a friend, or you can play alone, but then the computer will play the second mercenary, he will be very loyal and follow wherever you go. The mercenaries are: Brigand, Mercenary, Gentleman, Navvie, Thug and Preacher. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. They all are carrying a specific weapon and they have each their special power:
- The Navvie is the strongest mercenary. Carrying a cannon that will blast away any monster. One of his special powers is throwing a dynamite that will kill all your enemies on the screen. But he lacks speed and intelligence.
- The Thug is the second strongest mercenary. He is not so fast and smart either but his trusty shotgun and his molotov cocktails makes him very useful in battle.
- The Preacher is the smartest character and has God on his side. He carries a lightning gun that almost looks like a little wand but unleashes a powerful energy bolt that will both damage and pass trough to hit other monsters. First aid and freezing his enemies are some of his specials but beware: He has very low stamina!
- The Gentleman is my personal favourite. He is very clever and very respected person. His flame pistol will damage and pass trough every monster that he hits. He has many special tricks including Map, attract and repel monster.
- The Brigand is a very average and versatile mercenary. Shooting in all directions at the same time with his rifle is one of his specials.
- The Mercenary, a good all-arounder. His invention: the gatling gun is a very powerful weapon. He also has bombs and mines with him.

The Thug and the Preacher

After selecting two mercenaries you will send them out to 16 exciting levels loaded with monsters and traps. Lots of treasures can be found and look closely after secret places.
There are more then one exit on some levels, each exit will give you a different starting location on the next level. That is one of the reasons you will play the game again and again.

A part I really love about this game is the shopping section. After every 2nd level you will spend all the treasure you found on upgrading your characters level skill, stamina and haste. You can also buy extra lives and if you have the computer player with you, you can buy him more wisdom which will make him a smarter computer player. I find that very original.

The Gentleman and the Navvie

I would also like to note that those who has bought the original game also got six separately character cards included. It has a huge nice picture of each of the mercenaries and on the other side of the card there is a a small biography and information of what their advantages and disadvantages is and which weapon they are carrying and more. The cards adds a lot of atmosphere to the game and makes you admire the mercenaries more.

The Chaos Engine is one of the best Amiga games out there and I really hope you have played this classic once in your lifetime.

Review Summary
GRAPHICS: 10 / 10
Very good. The mercenaries are perfectly drawn. All the levels are very detailed and includes lots of cool looking monsters.

SOUND: 9 / 10
This game has some of my favourite Amiga tunes that I still enjoy listen to.

The best sound effects are the man with that wonderful voice who says something every time you do something special. I never get tired of listening to him. "Special activated", "Exit open", "Party power!" and "World complete" are only some of his memorable lines.

PLAYABILITY: 10 / 10
Playable! That is what the game is. The mazes especially are geniously put together. I find the difficulty and the length of the game to be very close to perfect and most of all: The six mercenaries. You will notice a difference playing each of them. That is what I think makes this game so very special.

OVERALL: 10 / 10
My favourite game from The Bitmap Brothers and one of my favourite Amiga games.
