Bitmap Brothers were one of the most well known Amiga game developers. They had many superb games such as Xenon and Speedball series, and ofcourse, Gods.
Set in the ancient Greece, you are a warrior who has a chance to beat the gods and gain immortality. To do this you have to go into battle with the gods themselves, on their own turf, and has to withstand anything that they throw at you. You, have to go through four long levels of hell and mayhem, fight the uttermost evil and come out victorious to be accepted to reside in the city of the gods.
Gods is basically a platform games, however it features so many innovative and new ideas that made it unique in its time . One these innovation was seamlessly blending adventure elements to the platformer concept of the game. The adventure is inventory-based and requires you to locate particular objects and use them on the environment or themselves to unlock your way and progress. What makes the whole thing very interesting is that you have a limited inventory space, so inventory management becomes an important part of the game.
There are many different weapons and potions available in the game. All the potions have different and interesting effects, but you can't pack too many of them, or your inventory will fill up and you won't have enough room for crucial objects. During the game you collect different types of treasure on your way, and you can use them to buy the weapons from the shop between levels. As you progress through the game your arsenal also grows, makes it easier to face the tougher enemies. By the end of the game you will be throwing tens of spears, axes, maces,...each time you press fire. I just don't know where the warrior keeps all these!
Talking about enemies, there are a lot of them and they are very imaginative. Monsters such as flying griffins, centaurs,satyrs...all waiting to give you a good thumping. The AI is very good and it gets better as you advance in the game. Many times you will have to plan your next move carefully, unlike the standard platform games in which you just 'jump and kill'.
The end-level bosses are also impressive and hard to beat, maybe too hard for some people. The game is very hard in total, but it possesses the important element of 'let me try again' which makes it a successful game. I was never able to beat Gods, but both my brothers finished it without any cheats or trainers.
There are a few minor problems though. Firstly, it is a bit slow. Although speed is not an element of the game, unlike other platformers like Sonic. Secondly, there are many random puzzles in the game where you have to pull a few levers in a particular order for example. A wrong combination can sometimes even lead to an instant death. The only way to beat the game is to find the solution to each random puzzle by trial and error, and remember it in your next game. This may put some people off.
All in all, Gods is a superb game with a lot of class and atmosphere. A thinking man's platformer. If you consider yourself an action fan, give it a try.

Very beautifully drawn backgrounds and sprites from the guy behind Speedball 2. The animation of the enemies and the main character are very good. However the end-level beasts are not as smooth. Well then again they are very big.

Excellent sound effects by Richard Joseph that add a lot of atmosphere and character to the game. The intro music is also very good.

A successful combination of platformer and adventure with numerous new and innovative features, cool weapons and power-ups, and interesting enemies. A lot of fun.
