I used to play this one to death and enjoyed every minute of it. It still holds that certain magic today. It's a really playable and fun game, especially in two-player mode, and it can even be said that it has aged well.
Replayability is a bit lacks though as you soon get through all the scenarios of the US Civil War with ease. There are four scenarios, each describing situations in the US Civil War from 1861 to 1864. The last year of the war, 1865 wasn't included in the game since the situation then heavily favoured the Union, but I always wished they had included that too, just for the fun of it. The computer doesn't give good resistance when playing against him, even on the higher levels of difficulty. This game really shines in two-player mode though.
North and South on the Amiga was far superior to both the Commodore 64 and PC versions as it was far prettier than both of them and indeed had better sound quality.
The Amiga version graphics are really amazing; with cartoon characters from the French comic depicting the entire Civil War with humour and style. The animations and little sub-games are also very good, especially the battle that ensues when two armies meet in the battlefield and fight it out with cavalry, cannons and infantry in an arcade-style battle. When you try to cut off an enemy supply line, a horizontally scrolling sub-game occurs, where you're fighting the clock to get to the enemy train and stop it, and one just like it happens as you try to capture an enemy fort. Random events can occur on the campaign map as well; with indian attacks and bad weather hindering your armies and such.
Overall, this is still a good game that deserves to be played; and especially in two-player mode, but playing against the computer will soon become boring.

Fun, well-made and very entertaining cartoonish graphics. Perfectly suited for the game.

The sounds are well-made and humorous. The music is also rather good, with clear inspiration from real Civil War period music.

Excellent and really great as a multi-player game, but playing against the AI can become boring.
