Cadaver 1990, Image Works
The Bitmap Brothers have probably one of the most well known curriculums as Amiga game producers of high quality, and having dwelled in the creation of action games, at one point decided to produce an adventure game, and Cadaver, an isometric medieval adventure was born.

Set in the mystical medieval settings that range from dark and humid caverns, dungeons and hidden rooms and sepulchres, to rich castles and palaces filled with treasures and mysteries unsolved, Cadaver delivers pure European medieval atmosphere with competence. The graphics, as usual with Bitmap Brothers after the joining of virtuoso Dan Malone, of Gods and Speedball 2 fame among others, are top notch, every room is depicted in detail and amazing art. Dozens and dozens of objects litter the path of our hero, yet all are beautifully designed.

In the sound department the theme song is a medieval military tune that delivers the atmosphere, as per costume with Bitmap Brother games, during the telling of the story. The in game effects are also well designed, unfortunately however, very sparse. In the absence of a in game tune, the loneliness of the path our hero crosses is heightened by the sparseness of the sounds, while this is good for the ambiance of the game, some might find it lacking.

Most of the gameplay is dedicated to finding keys, solving intricate puzzles, following clues and, it must be said - is highly difficult. Fortunately though, as investigating and travelling this labyrinth of rooms that is Cadaver, is for great part most of the fun, it still produces a great a moody game.

Some enemies and energy draining characters appear during the game, but, however, the primal focus is one puzzle solving, hint following and investigation of all the contents in the rooms.

Cadaver was the Bitmap Brothers first incursion into Adventure and at that they succeeded, at the time of release it was the best isometric adventure game out, with fantastic graphics, and dozens of rooms and objects to use and discover.

A must have in any serious Amiga fan collection.

Review Summary
GRAPHICS: 10 / 10
High quality graphics throughout, as nothing else would be expected from the Bitmap Brothers.

SOUND: 8 / 10
Where existing, high quality. Because of the lack of in game sounds a higher note can not be awarded. The sounds produced from enemy creatures are particularly weak.

PLAYABILITY: 7 / 10
Incredibly hard. I wonder how many, if anyone, each the end, or went past the first level without cheat codes. However, the mood, the settings and the adventuring are superb & rich.

OVERALL: 9 / 10
The Bitmap Brothers produce another classic, that latter on went to be expanded with the Payoff addon.

One of the best in its genre at time of release.
