Toki 1991, Ocean
Toki is a platform arcade conversion from an arcade Japanese hit. And, in among myriads of failed conversions, Toki is surprisingly and refreshingly successful.

Toki features, rather competently, some surprisingly fresh and cute graphics faithfully from the Arcade versions. The scenery is colourful, cute and highly rich on the characters and the background. Some of the sprites and big bosses are huge and incredibly detailed a lá Arcade style. The speed and quality of the graphics, however, never fall.

Soundwise, pure arcade tunes rule the game in chiptune fashion. The main tune is real nice as are the humorous background songs that flow from level to level. Some of them are really nice such as the Game Over song. Some may actually prefer the Amiga version over the Arcade one, quite an amazing conversion indeed!

Gameplay is unfortunately where Toki falls somewhat flat - it is an arcade conversion after all. It can get repetitive and there is no particular depth in it other than standard platform fare, enemy destroying and the occasional end of level boss. It is however a fun and no nonsense arcade platform action, and at that it succeeds.

Toki is probably as good as it gets in what concerns arcade conversions. Clearly a lot of work was put in to it and it shows. A fun and nice game to play indeed.

Review Summary
GRAPHICS: 10 / 10
Great quality arcade conversion. Amiga's version could easily be said to even surpass the original, arcade, version.

SOUND: 9 / 10
Toki is riddled with very nice tunes, in typical arcade fashion. The sound effects too, are pure arcade and really fit the mood of the game.

PLAYABILITY: 7 / 10
Somewhat perishable to excessive repetitiveness. Then again, it is supposed to be mindless arcade fun. And fun it is.

OVERALL: 8 / 10
Great arcade conversion. It might not be a legendary title or revolutionary, but it sure is a fun, competent and straightforward conversion that's worth getting played even after all this years.
