Sensible Soccer v1.1 - European Champions 1992, Renegade
Before Kick Off, there were only a few side view soccer games and Microprose Soccer, created by Sensible. Inspired by kick Off but not entirely satified by it, Sensible Soccer created this masterpiece.

It starts off by being a really good, solid football game. All the rules are in there, there are millions of teams to choose from, you can do substitutions and everything... all the sort of stuff you'd find in any self-respecting football game. But then Sensible Soccer starts pulling ahead of the rest. The controls are responsive and intuitive, and after a while you can forget they're there, leaving you to immerse yourself in the actual tactics and things. And speaking of tactics, (um) there are lots of them in it. You don't just charge towards the goal and hope for the best - you've got to look for people to pass to, and find ways to fool the goalkeeper, giving the whole thing a real, proper, footbally feel.

It is overhead in the style of Kick Off, but with a much more Sensible (no pun intended) viewpoint, giving you change to see much more of the pitch. The 1.1 version adds yellow and red cards and updated some glitches. For pure arcade excellence, this never has been bettered, with the exception of its sequel, Sensible World of Soccer (specifically the '97 version, which was the best of the lot).

Until Pro Evolution Soccer, there wasn't a single game which relied so much on tactics, other games were just pinball or tried to do to much for you (FIFA). And although even Jon Hare, Sensi's creator now admits Pro Evo might have finally become better, this is the one that remains solidly in my heart.
