Wonderboy in Monsterland [lemon] [hol]
Based on the 1987 arcade coin-op, which was the second game in a series that has continued to 2021 and spawned the Adventure Island series on the NES.

Controls. Spacebar to enter doors. Push down and press fire to use special weapons. There is a homebrew special edition hack that offers different controls. Linked below.

Rules:
Get the best score you can, during this round.
Post screenshots of your score in this thread, and write the score nearby.
Scores to be achieved without save-states, trainers, passwords, and cheats.
No continues or infinite score leeching.
Finish the game and post a screenshot of the end for the completion star.

Special Scoring:
If 7 people finish the game, the final bonus will be reduced from 31,600,004 to 10,000 points to make our league points fair for all players.

This is my first attempt.

I couldn't get the WHDLoad SE version running so went with the adf (a500 emulation - I really need to get something to transfer adfs to my real one!), the standard WHDLoad seemed waaaay too fast on my setup, couldn't even read the text as it flew past.

This is one of my fave acrade machines, And this version although it's not as great looking, It does kind of capture the feel of the arcade version.

Remember, There's 3 things you're trying to do to finish this thing.

1. Collect enough gold to not get killed by the bosses via buying equipment.
2. Find the Hero's Emblem to swap for the ruby (to weaken the final boss)
3. Find all the secret bosses to upgrade your sword.

I'll let you lot work it out for a bit. But if you get stuck, Let me know.

Right then, It's storytime with Mitch......

So, I go home last night and decie to play these two versions. On the original version in WHDLoad,

I got a credible 270,980, Not bad.

So, Lets see what happens when I play the SE version.

So, I decide to play the SE too, The disk version doesn't like WinUAE much, (It corrupts all the backgrounds every so often.)

But still corrupt backgrounds or not. Star me, Bizzle!

I think this is the original version getting the same crazy end bonus. The colours look right, paler sky etc.

Given that I couldn't get on a bunch of sites earlier. (this being one of them.)

The original seems to do it too. (Well the WHD version does.)

I did have a screenshot to prove this. But I have forgotten it. (And my homework, I think the dog ate it.)

It doesn't seem to be a random bonus either, I think I was about 6k short when I did it on the original version.

And my score was about 6k short of the one posted up there. So it's not a random bonus.

I forget how the rules work here. But if that "percentage of points" thing still applies, You want to apply it from the top ranked person who hasn't finished the game. Because if you're very lucky, without finishing the game the best you'll do is around 300k.

Anyway. That's food for thought for you. Take that information and do with it as you will. :

Oh, And Koko, If you mean those Ghost-like things that throw that stuff at you, Just jump over them. (you can also use your shield to block them, You do have a shield, don't you?) Make sure you find the secret door in that stage though, Because having a sword of legend by the endgame is useful.
