Goal! is an all time favourite game for me. Something I have picked up regularly for years. In the last comp round I belted a 50 PB in the arcade mode so am looking to beat that.

Woody's world is brand new to me. Exciting stuff, really looking forward to this round!

Had a few goes of Goal! today and happy with not getting smashed to bits in the 5th. On a previous attempt I performed somewhat better in earlier rounds but got beat by 2 or 3 in the final round so to pull 0-0 was good going early in the round.

Woody's World doesnt seem to have a high score table, so its another one of those 'grab it at the end or lose it forever' type of scenarios.

It's worth reading the manual for Woody's World as it gives a few hints as to what to do. I didn't know the chests number turns green when you have collected enough to exit the level, so like Zool you have to collect a quota. If it goes orange for finding all of the chests then you get an extra life.

For all those con-soul lovers who love to use a fire button to jump, there is a way to activate two buttons. Go to the map screen and press ESC and then choose the button options. This stuff should NOT have been hidden like that.

Spent most of this first try getting completely lost in the third level of the first world. Had to pause and look at the HOL map to save my sanity to see where the exit door was. In fact I was just 3 screens away from it.

Goal - 22. I never liked this. Stop letting people who don't really like football make football games. :/

Not that enamoured with Woody's World either, It's got everything I hate about console platformers in. No reaction to getting hurt, Buttery controls, And every level plays like an ice level. It's a shame, Because Vision did some good stuff. This is not that.

A lot of people don't like the Dino Dini games. Prior to Goal! I worked SO hard trying to get to grips with Kick Off II because it was so loved by the magazines. But after weeks of hard work I was still really struggling with it, I found it a frustrating game. And then Goal! came out and I kinda clicked with it very quickly, because (as many of you will know) it retains the basic premise of Kick Off II control but tries to make it more accessible, a bit more forgiving. The ball control is just that bit more 'sticky' and then you get some entirely new things like the auto finish striking at close range.

I like Goal! I really focused on the league element when I played it in the 90s, didn't really ever play the arcade mode. The league mode is surprisingly good.

It is admitedly a game whereby you really do improve with practice. For example, taking the ball off the opposition and tackling and defensive play in general gets simpler by just playing time and time again and learning the simpler techniques, rather than the headless chicken defence that everyone starts with.

I don't dislike it because I can't play it, I dislike it because it makes every game into kick and run as fast as you can toward goal. Dino didn't like football, And as a result, all of his games look like Sunday league tactics. :P

The more I've played Goal! the more I've moved away from the kick and run mentality, although I absolutely recognise what you say.

I believe the aim is to use the fire button to slow the run, gain control, then release and sprint and then slow and control and turn. The default control position is to have fire pressed.

Oh, I can do all that, It's just less effective than charging at goal at full pelt. :) I'm not saying it's a bad football game, It's just not my fave. I'm of the opinion that if you're playing a football game, You're after emulating your heroes, Not the Dog and Duck 2nd XI of a Sunday morning. :) But in real terms it'd be in the top 5 football games on the machine, (excluding management games, of course.)

^ Yes indeed. I had another go on Monday but got less score. 100% of my deaths were due to sliding off platforms into instant death, especially in the underwater level, and also the cloud level; where you have to fight the wind. I like the exploring sections of the castles, but the Mario sections are not very fun for me.
