Some levels are missing, and the screen is reduced, because it's a conversion from Spectrum, but in the end it plays pretty well. In the end, Rainbow Islands wasn't a complete conversion either, yet it is considered a masterpiece.

If only the graphics had been a bit bigger and smoother it wouldve made the world of difference to this game.
That's the real problem with this at the end of the day... 5/10

This game stinks. It's not even as good as the Sega Master System version. Could and should have been closer to the Mega Drive version

Another poor conversion from the usual suspects.

Today, it is easy for veteran players that we are criticizing the work of TIERTEX. And this is normal because retrospectively, it is really a shame for the AMIGA not to have conversions of these mythical games at the height of its technical capabilities, so it is difficult to hide our frustration.
But in 1989, STRIDER was clearly good compared to other games of this kind on Amiga. Titles like TURRICAN, GODS or ASSASSIN did not exist yet and most games were simple adaptations of 8-bit games without even a scrolling. Of course there was SHADOW OF THE BEAST but it was the exception as opposed to the rule. Most Amiga players never played on Megadrive at the time and I remember that reviews in the magazines and comments of friends in the playground were for the most part glowing.
So when I read all these comments in which the players severely criticize this STRIDER on Amiga, I think there is a bit of hypocrisy around the CAPCOM game conversions. I tell myself that there are some who forget that they had great fun with it before discovering the original, often many years later. We must dissociate our childhood memories from the current cold and objective statement. There is no shame in recognizing the good times spent on Amiga playing games of debatable quality nowadays. It is surely not on Amiga that I would play again STRIDER but it is still a great memory. And I'm sure I'm not alone in this situation

Such a poor conversion as usual from the guys at Tiertex!! Anyways play the much better Megadrive conversion or the actual MAME arcade game instead of this rubbish! Avoid at all costs

I really can't believe that there are still people that dare to talk good about this awful piece of trash! Slow, jerky, with a lot of missing things... It does not even have a final!!! And the Sega Master System version is an almost perfect conversion of this, just to make more evident the fact that it is not worthy of being a game for a 16 bit computer, bleah! Vote: 1/10

Just started this one--rather difficult in spots. Don't care for the constant, "T-T-T-T-TAW! TAW TAW! THAW THAW THAW!". Other than that--
7/10

I actually quite liked this back in the day. Not the worlds greatest game, massive case of "ST-itis", but reasonably playable in my opinion. In fact I prefered it to the (over-rated) megadrive version, which while at a glance appeared a reasonable port played, and felt "wrong" to me. Loved it in the arcades, and while quite stripped down on the amiga, what was left played like an ok-ish facsimile.

I got this on a compilation which I bought and thought it's a decent platform/action game for its time, despite the fourth level not working on my original disk ...until I played the original arcade version years later and saw how many unique gameplay elements the Amiga version was missing.

Abysmal! When converting an arcade I think you have to achieve a few things. Firstly gameplay. Then GFX followed by music. So. If I were to convert this. I would say. Let’s keep the fluid fast paced gameplay at all costs. Then GFX that resemble the arcades. They could have easily of retained the size of the sprites (except maybe the bosses), toned down the palette etc. I know how problematic parallax can be for an Amiga, so just leave it out altogether. Why didn’t this game scroll properly? Why was everything so small and SLOOOWWW? Why was there only one Tune? Answer: Tiertex and US GOLD! In the hands of someone like Travellers Tales this could have been excellent. But alas it was not meant to be. Another one of my fave arcades (along with SFII and Final Fight) butchered by US MOLD. And What was up with that ending... It’s like Tiertex just thought one day, ok that’s enuf, don’t care if u don’t fight the end boss and finish the game, well just leave it like it is.?? Hatefull Sh*te! Avoid like the black death!

I liked this game for my Amiga 500,but when i bought my Megadrive and bought this game for it in 1990 i could see that the Megadrive version was much better

Mediocre conversion of a great coin-op. Nethertheless quite playable, so if you do not know the original give it a try. Somehow i have the feeling that the developers had a max of 4 weeks to finish this one.

So many conversions SHOULD have been so much better on the Amiga - When you look at something like Turrican compared to this, you know the machine could have handled it...... A fave of mine in the arcades.... I had to wait for MAME before playing it properly again.

Tiertex's name will be remember forever (and with terror) by all coin-op fans who possessed an AMIGA or an ATARI ST.
Strider Hiryu is not an exception.
Horrible graphics, unhearable sound, poor and disgusting playbility.
The original version is light year away from this smelling crap.
Meanwhile, in Japan, the X68000...

This is NOT a great port of the arcade machine. Even the excellent MegaDrive version is far from arcade perfect but this bastardisation is just horrific to anyone who appreciates the qualities of Capcom's original.

I can't belive this! So many negative comments! It's true what Tiertex mostly did was shit but this IS a great port of the coin-op machine! Almost 1:1! I played this a lot. It was pretty hard at first but with practise I became so good that I could beat the the game all over and over and again... So, it's was too easy after all.

Beuaarrrkk !!!!!!!
shops..... Yep the CPS1 jamma board has lot of memory, OK, but the Amiga just can do as good as the megadrive...... Even with less colours on screen.
Die Tiertex die !!!!

If you forget the graphics were shrunk, Strider wasn't that bad arcade conversion. Treat it is a game in its own right, not as a port of monster of an immersely enjoyable arcade game and you're more happy with it. Even though you can't feel but disappointed when you see the mid and end of level bosses...

This was nothing less than another crime committed by Tiertex, another terrible coin-op conversion marketed by US Gold and another reason to get embarrassed in front of Megadrive owners. Awful, really.

Ah, nice game. Sweet memories and a good TWR crack... He he he!

As a 14 year old it looked great in the Zzap! Reviews. After shelling out £25 I discovered the scrolling was crap, the music was all muffled, and that speech at the beginning? Pathetic!I took it back and swapped it for Xenon 2. Wise decision kid.

Well I thought it was a really playable conversion. It was techically horrid, it made no use of the Amiga's capabilities whatsoever, and 90% of the arcade game was missing from the conversion.
But still, the basic guts of the gameplay - which is what made the arcade game fun in the first place - was pretty much retained. So it's still a fun jumparound, even if the levels are conspicuously sparse.
And by wiping out most of the arcade machine's extra bits, Tiertex also unwittingly made the game much easier... Which makes it much less frustrating than the arcade and console versions which had the difficulty level cranked up to ridiculous proportions.
Granted, the arcade version is *much* better, and this is a pretty limp conversion. But it's still much more fun than most people make out - and at the end of the day, that's all that counts. 7/10.

I like this game, killing baddies with a long sword and the ability to climb walls. Nice title screen music.
