Looks good, the coder has great skills but the game just sucks. Poor gameplay and the giant characters ruin any possibility for real variety and interaction with the environment.

Back then, in 1989, the game was very popular with users. Graphics, animations, sound and the associated gameplay were overwhelming. Today no longer understandable and a comparatively bad game. But when you've seen something like this for the first time when the computers were still weak, it's been an impressive game. Today I would rate this game very badly, the gameplay is not fun. But from the memories I would rate it well. The tension was greater then.

It looked great, but played pretty bad...

Well, Sword of Sodan seems to essentially exist to prove a point, and that it did well: you could use a basic Amiga to run a game with sprites the size of which was hitherto unseen. That they weren't particularly well-drawn or animated is another story. The sounds were also great on expanded Amigas, the environments were fascinating and the gameplay was, uh, what it was.

I was blown away when I bought it back in the day. I thought it was very detailed and the music was awesome. It was a very short game but it still holds fond memories for me.

The graphics , sound and atmosphere of the game are fantastic . One of the first games that I played on a amiga . I was blown away !! But the gameplay was pretty mediocre . 7/10 for me.

Known for having probably the largest on-screen sprites, Sword of Sodan is actually fun. There is not a lot of depth, but when you have giant characters on screen hacking down other giant enemies, who needs depth?
7/10

An amiga classic game. I loved it as a kid and i' ve finished it ! Graphics were impressive. But if you haven't played it yet you should better try another game. " Patarival" made a good desciption of it i'm agree with him 100%. I will add a tip here: Along the game you pick up special items, only a good knwoledge of when to use them can make you go to the end. Yes we talk about strategy in here.

This one has somewhat amateurish graphics and fugly animation. Very easy and simple gameplay. Yet, it was one of the first games where you saw what quantum leap it was from 8 to 16 Bit: the amount of graphics, sound and gigantic sprites were simply impossible on 8 Bit.
Although I have many issues with the graphics and gameplay of Sword of Sodan, it still remains one of my favourite games. The game has just so many unique quirks that make it likeable: that weird animal you can ride in the dungeon below the castle, the gigantic sprites, little details like the poetry between the levels and the overview map all add much to the games appeal.
Later, Soren Gronbech would show with Datastorm that he was actually one of the most capable programmers on the Amiga.

One of my favorites because it was my very first Amiga game. Loved the cover artword by Dorian Valejo (boris' son). Gameplay was very lacking but the big sprite graphics were very nice. Overall nice looking game, too easy though and actual gameplay wasn't very good. Still a favorite of mine because of memories. Saw the complete box version on Ebay had to buy it for my collection if for any reason just the trip back to memory lane

Interesting game. The traps in the trap room are a bit dickish, but overal this one's pretty good.

Above average graphics, below average gameplay. In conclusion, an average game. In my view, Sword of Sodan is very similar to Shadow of the Beast in the sense that it is a shallow game disguised by brilliant visuals. "Beware of traps" echoes the disembodied voice in the game. Indeed.

I remember showing this to some console friends back in the days.. They were really blown away by the amazing graphics and speech. Too bad there was hardly any playability. Just keep the firebutton pressed and hope the enemy goes down first.

"Sword of Sodan" is a special game even though the gameplay itself is nothing special.
The game feels like the final chapter of a Conan-like fantasy book. The hero already found the fabled sword of Sodan and is now ready to plow through the last defense of the bad guy.
Graphics, sound and, yes, atmosphere are truly something special. It's certainly not the best game ever but I enjoy playing it even today.

I remember my mate coming back from england with this game, and I was blown away by the GFX. Of course, I didnt play it much, and so I never really knew just how lacking the game play was. Looking at it now, I realise just how un-great the game really is, but I cant help but always have the memory from my younger years that this was truly the most awesome game ever!!

Almost as bad as the Sega version. At least that one had better graphics.
I love the way that people act as if the "atmosphere" (read: generic medieval setting with giant, sloppily-drawn sprites) makes up for the slow, stiff, unfair, and generally terrible gameplay, to say nothing of the worthless animation and scrolling. If atmosphere is all that you care about, why are you playing a bad game when you could be watching a good movie, reading a good book, or listening to good music?

Lacking in gameplay a bit, but definitely not in atmosphere!!! One of the classics. 6/10

It's true that the gameplay of "Sword of Sodan" may be lacking a little bit but the game more than makes of with it's atmosphere.
The huge sprites, good backgrounds, cool sounds (great title-tune and a little bit of speech) and nice poem between the stages are unforgetable. Add to that the ability to use different attack-moves and a nice dose of violence and you have an all-time classic.
Sure, it get's a bit repetitive and it's very hard (maybe too hard) but it's undeniably a great experience - which gains a lot through emulation by adding the ability to save (states).

Well.... Im tell you one story.
Im from Argentina.... When im a child I meet some kid (very close friend
later) from USA. He show me for first time a Commodore Amiga (I having el C-64), Sword of Sodas was the first game that I see on his Amiga, and my face was

I played this game a lot. Those big old sprites just had me coming back again and again to see how far I could get. I loved the overall graphic qualty and vaguely remember how cool the title screen was with the picture waving like the ocean. Hell, that kind of stuff impressed me to no end back then. I got pretty far in it. I never thought it was unplayable, although unfair at times.
Can't deny this is a nostalgic favorite. Probably more like a 7/10 game overall.

This game had a dark atmosphere like no others had:
A very huge graphic and a really disturbing sound.
In fact it was no so funny, but I give 8 because this game was a show for all the amiga addicted and not.

Pretty graphics, lousy gameplay. Best part is chopping off the heads of the giants.

This used to be great to show to your friend, and was the reason to buy a 512kb expansion for your Amiga, besides animating with DPaint.

OMG the sprites! So huge! But not playable at all.

A true legend in its time but nothing much really...

This was one of the first games I had, but if I have loaded it three or four time is even too much... Never liked it

This game had something really... Such a mysterious, unique atmosphere you actually took it quite seriously when playing - that's what I love about games, you know, when they let you forget that they are just games. But unfortunately, this one became very unfair in higher levels AFAIR, and the final enemy was impossible to beat (at least for me, hehe). Still a great piece of software, of artwork.

Today I would laugh and turn it of quickly.
But as the very first Amiga game ever seen, seeing and trying this !
Muhahaha...
C64 wasn't the same after this I tell you ...
GFX reveloution for sure, and with speeches .... Wooohaa...
Can't give it more than 7 though.

It wasn't great to play at times cos it seemed you were hitting nowt when it looked like you were (if that makes sense, hehe) but otherwise at the best of times the game was good to play, nice GFX and good music

Jaw dropper and flagship of Amiga in 1988. Graphics looked absolutely mind blowing back then. But the game itself? Pretty boring.

Sword of Sodan was a brilliant Amiga title. Choose Hero or Heroine... WEEEEEEEEEEEEE (Wasn't this title originally developed for some computer I believe called Next that never actually reached production?)

The game was published in early 1988 (not 1989), and the graphics were totally stunning: Discovery Software was my personal myth in that age

This was one of the first games I got on the old Amiga 500. I remember my mates coming round to see this one coz of the great graphics and sound... But it was short lived when they actually had a shot. As I'm a sucker for spooky, horror stuff I loved the graveyard level but what the hell was those "barrel" things that you had to jump over? Still, a cracking piece of nostalgic Amiga history. I still have a look at now and again just to say "ahhh, them were the days!"

One of the first Amiga games I saw at my friend's site (together with Test Drive 2). Totally blew me away, no matter how we rate this game today

Looked nice enough in still shots. Looked total crap when moving. Gameplay was terrible and uninspired too.

When this came out everybody went crazy for the, at that time, terrific graphics and soud effects.
Today we can say that all the hype generated by the stunning visuals has passed by and what remains it is just an example of what Amiga could handle from a technical point of view and almost nothing else.
A brilliant star, who quick fell out while lightining the Amiga skies for a while...

This had BIG graphics. Played like a brick.

Funny game, I enjoyed it mostly due to the giant sprites. A time killer but nothing seriously influencing amiga's game history.

Boring, dull, uninspired and badly animated. The stills made the Amiga famous back then, but once you started playing you realised there was no game at all behind the pretty static graphics. I still remember, though, that "Select Hero or Heroine" speech

An early fav and still one of the best games for the amiga...

What was up with the popularity of this game? I mean, the huge sprites were impressive, don't get me wrong, but it was totally unplayable!

Whilst the graphics & sound might have been good, the actual game was cack as well as the animation.
For examples of good Amiga visual-fests check out Shadow Of The Beast II, for examples of great sound check out Xenon II.
This game isn't going to impress anybody these days.

This was one of the games that made the Amiga famous back in the 80's, at least for me
