This game could have been so good - the graphics have that classic Core Design quality and it is an interesting quest, but the combat just kills it. Replacing it with a turn based combat system would have been much better. The game also slightly janky even on real hardware. Still it plays fairly well.

I hadn't thought of this game in a looong time, but now I'm remembering how much I loved the gameplay and the surreal graphics. I have no memory of finishing or quitting(I must be getting old here) so this is one I have to revisit!

It's probably harder to judge now than it was when I got it almost two decades ago. If it were all about the spectacularity, gut feeling and originality you'd give it a 10/10 by all means.
Innovation came a bit at the expense of a few gameplay aspects, though. For one thing the combat system, albeit unique, was a bit awkward and did not allow for group battles. Then the inventory management was not exactly slick so to speak. Just a flat list where all items weigh just the same, and you get no warnings about how much room is left until it's too late.
Once I had to restart the whole game because I had run out of space right before I could take an essential item from a fallen enemy, and there was no possible way I could come back later to get it. Given that this is one of those games that use up an entire disk for a single save position, you can tell how frustrating it was.
Still, these downsides fade almost completely when facing the epic intro, superb graphics (both technically and artistically), unique minigames and the other countless treats of this game. Definitely one of the games the Amiga community could be proudest of, too bad it was just *this* close to total perfection.

I used to love this "light RPG" type game, actually both this and its sequel. I loved the overall visual style and feel of the game too.

Look'n'feel of this one kicks arse (cartoonish introduction rocks!). There are some amazing ideas which brought this game to another level of Action/RPG genre. Although this game is good (it has great design and concept), authors managed to spoil the whole fun with two things: horrible fight system and very limited inventory. With both you can live and the game is still playable but it takes a lot effort from the player to get used to it. Apart from that this is a very original and good game. What is interesting, that even with its flaws it still hooks you in. Recommended but be aware that it is pretty difficult.

This game is very cool, and the design looks great! The only problem is about the game system. Never seen a so ugly fighting system in my gaming life. You can be the stronger warrior in the world, but if your mouse doesn't works good then be sure you will die, and before you can understand what's happend, all your party in the mean time will die.

I had the demo of this and loved to play it every now and then. It's the mini-game with the girl and the pigtails. I felt the graphics were amazing, cartoonish like Don Bluth or something in that bit. I really really wanted the full game but never bought it for a reason I can't remember. I"ll definitely fire this up on the emulator.
One thing, the sequel was one of the last games I bought for my CD32. I had to go to a lot of trouble to get it playing for some reasons I don't remember. I do remember there being a lot of very clever puzzles and lots of appealing graphics.
I'll get the emu versions of both and give them a go. I still love this kind of game and Viking games are very rare for some reason. Rune on the PC was the last one I remember playing and it was outstanding and huge like this is reported to be. So...seek it out if you like viking games. It uses the old unreal engine with a few tweaks. Very addicting.

This game was huge! I spent the best part of a year just trying to finish world 1, then when I got onto world 2 after using a spell to defeat some sea serpent, the floppy disk was corrupt!!! I hadn't made backups and so that was the end of that! Incredible game though, great gameplay, music and graphics. I think I will have to get hold of a copy off eBay or something and try to do it again.

Great intro on this one, and great music too, but quite tiresome fighting system

I remember booting this game up not knowing what to expect...
I was totally suprised by the intro...
Then after just a few minutes of gameplay I was totally hooked...
A true gem!!!

A true gem in Amiga history, had it all, lush GFX and sound, great music, a top intro and some good gameplay. Heimdall was something different when it arrived, it did proud like what Chaos Engine did for The Bitmap Brothers or Alien Breed for Team 17, a classic well remembered and the mini games in it were nice little touches too
