Beautifully polished and based on a lovely car. Excellent music But your car's sprite feels very much like a cardboard cutout in front of a screen (despite being fairly well animated) with no sense of traction on the road at all. And I'm not sure if it's just on an expanded A1200, but trying it now it actually seems to play much too fast.
Overall not bad though.

Even though Jaguar XJ220 is more polished and smoother than any other its counterpart in the genre back in the days, the game has its downsides. It is a very unique product in the whole spectrum of racing games. Full of details not available in other titles but the gameplay on the larger scale becomes dull and repetitive. Most of the time there are no opponents on the track and like it was already said if you didn't manage to overtake them at the beginning, you have no chance to catch them at all what results in a failure to complete the game.

"Thrash Pig" alone was one of the greatest technical achievements in the history of 16-bit sound production. However, like most Core Design games, we didn't get the pleasure to hear it alongside a nice engine roar. Whether this was limited by the memory or by audio channels, it's probably a question I'll never want to hear the answer to.

Other than that it's a smooth and competently made racing game, give or take some rather washed-out car graphics. It didn't hold the interest high for as long as I would have wanted it to, though.

Decent enough - but only for those times you'd lent Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 to your mates.

This was one of the very first racing games I encountered on the Amiga.
Well it's not as smooth and advanced as later games were, but it did bring me a lot of enjoyment, one thing that I really likes about this games are the controls, you can drive with the mouse!

Great tech... But not fun at all. The relative speed between the vehicles is too much the same, so if you don't pass all of the rivals the beginning, or if you loose a lot of speed during the race, there are no hopes at all to gain positions, and you'll drive for 90% of the time without never meet someone on the road. Lotus saga was a lot better. Vote 4/10

I had the "preview" of this, which was a midnight level with track 6 of the full version. Really enjoyed it! Really cool racing game. In the preview version, once you finish the race, it showed a screen with some information about the XJ220 itself. That's how I got to learn that it was the fastest road car in the world! (before the McLaren F1 and later came out of course. )

Very well assembled racer that sort of proved that we didn't really needed to wait on Gremlin Graphics to get a good arcade racer out. Core Design put their hands to it in hopes of stealing the limelight from the Lotus series. Did it succeed in that? Er... Nope. But this game is, still, quite good. It revamps the original Lotus "championship race" mode instead of option for the "race against time/Out-Run mode" favoured by Lotus 2. It had nice graphics taking the entire screen and with a good animation flow. The races themselves had other cars that were real instead of fantasy ones or an all Jaguar ensemble. I remember the Bugatti EB110, the Chevrolet Corvette, the Porsche 959, the Lamborghini Countach, etc. Sometimes I think that this game would have been even better if it wasn't just about the Jaguar and allowed you to chose any of the other brands as your race car. The fact that your opponents drove real cars made it more compelling to race them and beat them on both the driver and constructors championship's. Jaguar XJ220, the game, may lack the action and the sense of speed of the Lotus series but it's still, overall, a good game that I enjoyed playing back in the day.

I liked this one - trying to finish as high as possible so that you had enough money for repairs was good, as well as the exploring the world element and the smart weather effects. Graphically it could've been a tad better in places however...

At its launch, Jaguar was *massively* overhyped as a Lotus 2 beater- particularly in the graphics department. Regardless of how good it might appear on paper, it blatantly isn't *that* great. One has to wonder how much pressure advertisers put on certain magazines to rate it so highly.

Compared to Lotus 2, the graphics are undefinably less-convincing, with a slightly nasty synthetic feel. Possible causes include your car having a hard, black edge which gives it a "cutout" feel. Plus, the sky gradients (some of which are unconvincingly garish in a way Lotus 2 never was) and backgrounds just don't fit together as realistically as Lotus did in practice.

Gameplay itself also fails to convince in the same manner. As others have said, you don't get the feeling of speed that Lotus gave (even when blazing along at 220mph or whatever) or that you're actually driving. It just lacks "feel", and the game is also too easy and hence boring.

Jaguar isn't awful by most standards, but judged by the hype of the time, it's grossly overrated.

No, it's not "Lotus" but it still a truly great racing game. And, personally, the XJ220 is one of my favorite cars - which may add a little bit to my enjoyment.
Nice graphics, good sound and very good gameplay. In my opinion one of the best racing games on the Amiga.

Not the best racer around, but still a very decent one. It holds a good system to keep you hooked. The only thing is that i got pretty far in the game saving my progress as i went along. One day the game "forgot" everything. As if i erased everything!!! I almost died!
Good fun though. The car looks funny indeed.

This game was released with a lot of hype but for me it cannot hold a candle to the Lotus games or Crazy Cars III or even the Super Cars games. For me this game was slow and extreamly dull and as much as I tried then, and have tried since on my 1200 via WHDload i just cannot stand this game. Just not my cup of tea!!

A good racing game which I enjoyed playing, but whenever I would come close to finishing it, even if I had a big lead in the championship with a few races left I would get a message saying that the sponsors had pulled out and the team couldn't continue racing. Game Over.

Letting you play for hours on end and then telling you that is unforgivable.

Along with Pinball Fantasies, my niece and nephew would fight over who gets to play the thing. My neph used to really hog the Amiga for this one. They loved it. I haven't played it in 15 years. I remember finding it a fun time as well.

I bought the CD32 Lotus Trilogy set and quite liked those too. But this one is nearly up there with them, from what I remember. I loved the weather effects, fog, rain...and remember the animation of the car being very smooth and sharp looking.

Arcade racing at it's best on Amiga with this and the Lotus games. Hard to rate, really, since it's been a while. I'd definitely choose Lotus over this.

Want to add that this was one of the games I bought from a magazine ad and the retailer sent me a stack pirated floppies. Shame on you!!

This game is okay. No more, no less. The thing that makes it good is the fact that you are presented with a load of tracks in different countries, which you have to complete. You dont play just from race to race, but you are presented with a global travelplan. That "storyline" makes you want to go on, not the game on itself. Good gfx and okay gameplay. (70%) NIA.

Finally got to play this title, and I must say that it's most valuable function is reminding on how good the original Lotus really is. Not that this is a bad game, it's just that a rip-off should be expected to improve on or at least be as good as the original. Jaguar XJ220 clearly isn't.

It definitively has good sides, though. The track editor is a brilliant addition, and the one thing I really miss in Lotus. Also the repair system is potentially more challenging and more realistic. On the other hand, in an arcade game realism isn't necessarily a good thing. The selection of tunes is also nice, and more varied than Lotus'.

But the main point of the game - the racing itself - just doesn't feel entirely right. While the lotus car is a heavy, hard-hitting machine that's really in touch with the track the jaguar seems much more like a piece of graphic overlaying an unevenly drawn track. Somehow the car gets through hairpin curves despite me turning in the wrong direction. You are barely getting punished for driving poorly, why bother to improve yourself? Details like these (there are several others as well) goes a long way in making or breaking the game, as this (and Lotus!) shows.

While I would have loved to see some of its features in Lotus, Jaguar XJ220 is nothing more than a barely-above-average rip-off of the Lotus games.

Excellent racer! Although Lotus 2 remains my favourite this one is a very close second. It's definitely very Lotus-influenced but it's great for sure. There are 36 tracks there which is quite a lot (and very few are similar) but if that's not enough there is the course editor ! Even if you have to start with an existing scenery (although you can start the track shape from zero) and you cannot put additional scenery elements (e.g. If the original track had no bridges you can't put bridges on the new track), there is a large choice there ! I also liked the repair screens which makes the game even more interesting, and there was some pretty good music (I liked Speed E Boy) but I always played with the sound effects. Recommended.

I never played Lotus so I can't comment on that, but I did play this and I thought it was excellent. What do I think was excellent about it? The music, the amount of tracks to race around, the different weather conditions, the repair shop and the 2 player mode. Me and my dad completed it on 2 player mode several times, each time praying the gearbox would last the championship (they were expensive to replace/repair! Fab game!

My fav arcade racing game on Amiga. Technically Lotus is better, but Jaguar wins in playability; a perfect track editor, the race-for-position factor and an unusual strategy side makes it a true classic in Amiga history.

I never understood why they have done this, yes graphic are good, but I think after Lotus series, you must do somethink better or nothink, well this isn't better than Lotus so I cant understand why I had to play this... You never feel "inside" the race, the scrolling is less smoth than Lotus and after a while you get bored...

Ah, the old Lotus Vs Jaguar debate. Personally I was a Lotus man. XJ220 was OK, but the car never seem to have any 'weight' behind it like the Lotus game did. I think it was to do with when you hit something in Lotus - you stopped and it really cost you. In XJ200 if I remember correctly, you just bounced around a bit. XJ200 did have damage tables though which were sadly lacking in the Lotus series all the way through. For me though, Lotus was the better game.

This racing game really reminds me of playing Lotus, but with Jaguar it looks quite different. This racing game is even better, racing across the world trying to win the race for Jaguar, some courses are bit difficult so you have to go easy on this game, because when you keep on losing in hard levels, the game is over. Such a good racing game, awesome graphics and good sounds and music. Nicely done by CORE software.

Anyway, the game was probably the best street racing game ever made for Amiga, no doubt about it.

This game amazed me most with it's extremely moodish soundtrack by Martin Iveson, who showed again what AmigaMODs are able to. Moreover, you could steer your machine with mouse (some preferred it with trackball) and give it an analog control. Delicious!

Ahh! The racer I prefer. Jaguar never got the recognition it deserved, and that's a shame, because this game is way better than Lotus as it features a level editor, and Lotus does not. A level editor increases a game's lastability. I always use my own tracks for this game. Also this game features some cool music by Nuke/Anarchy. Check out "Moody Breeze". My only personal gripe about this game is the lack of any real challenge. It's a bit too easy. But that doesn't really matter as there is a two-player option in this game. Me and my friend used to play against each others a lot some 12 years ago.

If you wanted a good racing-game with multiple options and great music around '92 this was probably the only one available, I remember it's stereo engine sound coming out of my speakers as the Jaguar would pass by on the intro-screen, then followed by a funky mod and ready to compete against my friends, used to show of with this game too.
Excellent!

Although this gets a lot of things right, it's not always exciting to play, with a lot of phases where there's nothing happening during the race, and it's too dependant on the 'strategy' elements outside the races, which are far too random. Good but not great.
