"This style of game always reminded me of midwinter 2 - UK Apache"
According to Wikipedia Mike Singleton ( who did Midwinter I and II) also worked on this, so maybe it is Midwinter 3!

Yeah have to agree, got pretty boring after a while. This style of game always reminded me of midwinter 2, that was a much better game.

Being the first release of Mirage, AoE had a big and attractive gamebox. It even had a videotape in it teaching the basics of the game! An interesting political premise indeed and lots to do both in the field in a filled polygon world and in menus handling the micro management. In the long run though the game became tedious. Plodding through all the provinces doing same things all over again wasn't exactly fun.
