There's as much reason to praise this game as to criticise it.

Technically it knew how to be impressive: from the digitised sprites to the bird's eye 3D pitch and actual sampled crowd chants, there was nothing like it on the Amiga, not even Simulmondo's earlier I Play games.

The price paid for all that, however, is that you're much less in control than a proper football game would require. It is true that, unlike IPlay, the game switches the player under human control, but usually this happens too late for you to perform time-critical actions such as intercepting a pass. The AI-controlled teammates don't do anything useful to make up for this, often standing still and choking any possibility of co-ordinated actions or assists. The computer-controlled team, on the other hand, is a lot more dynamic and reactive and can pull off tactics you cannot even dream of. The limited view wouldn't be a problem if these mechanics were a little smoother.

3DWS kind of evokes the same feeling as when playing Guy Spy: both are nice to look at, and both try to give the illusion of being in control, when in fact you are mostly a passenger of their muddled and scripted gameplay.

Once I lost the ball had no chance to get it back. Probably I was lamer or something. I like soccer games but not this one. Not bad but not my cup of tea.

I gave this a 5, it's actually not as bad as I was expecting, think 3do/ps1 FIFA and you won't go wrong, far from the best footy game but makes a interesting change for 1/2 hour!

On TGM the game's preview was a possible revolution for soccer games. But in the end, it was a great delusion.

It looked so good, yet played so bad. The Rise of the Robots of football games... 3/10

An interesting concept that unfortunately isn't very playable because of the limited view the player has of the field. It's too easy to lose track of where the ball is, and what is going on. Had they moved too a distance view, like in 3D Tennis, then this might have been good (but I doubt it would have run very smoothly on an A500).
