Heavenly62020-08-11 A good game, but not as memorable as Eye of the Beholder, Captive or Dungeon Master. Some of the ideas were good. Enemies which split into mini spiders, the water levels and how you use most of your spells unlike in Dungeon Master. Each character has specific items which is also good. The ending is reminiscent of Dungeon Master too. A similiar tactic can be employed to deal with the final boss. It does make it a very easy fight. I never felt I was becoming more powerful in this game which is why I am giving this a 8 rating. Negatives are, the Spell system is alittle clunky, the charater pool points aren't really well done. The dead gems of fallen heroes, there were many; cannot be raised from the dead One thing EOTB did well, if you explored the game you could find rare old bones which you could bring back to life into your party to fight for you. Still BC is a good game. View all comments (61)
tertronostalgic2020-01-28 Been playing this and Eye of the Beholder recently (on a real A500) and i have to say i prefer this. Beholder has more sluggish combat and no auto -mapping facility.
Black crypt does have auto -mapping and seems faster all round. My only real gripe about this is the dungeon walls being a bit brown and bland looking.
But this is very playable and the puzzles are tricky without being impossible View all comments (248)
lgk2016-08-08 (9/10) Well programmed dungeon game with cool EHB 64 colours graphics, good gameplay, automap (you have to use the Wizard Sight spell for it) and a nice touch of humor here and there.
In the manual are included complete level maps that you can use if you really are stuck.
It was excellent at the time and it is still very enjoyable today.

cyb0rg2016-04-09 (9/10) The best for me, in this category ... Nice atmosphere, graphics and gameplay .... I've finished it several times (spent hours on it )
Vyncynt2015-07-14 (10/10) Of all the 3D RPG classics on the Amiga, Black Crypt is my favorite. It does not adhere to traditional AD&D rules or monsters, but takes the genre to another level. The visuals, sound, and mechanics are superior and keep you coming back for more. 10/10 View all comments (22)
Arsace2014-12-31 (10/10) For me this is simply the best pseudo 3D RPG on classic Amigas. It has even a sort of arcadey feeling I cannot explain, great great pixel artwork and fast mechanics, nice (perhaps) 64 colours palette, excellent playability, fast projectiles and missiles, nices spells, mario-like underwater levels, original and very well drawn and nicely animated half fantasy / half scifi mosters, excellent sound department, and a great automapping system, it's the perfect true amiga feeling dungeon crawler for me, I enjoyed every bit of it! mike_tyson2011-11-25 This is the very first game by Raven Software, who would later on the PC create some of my favourite games: the ray-casting classic Hexen and the Quake engine based Hexen II. Black Crypt is on the same very high quality level.
Dungeon Master, and especially Eye of the Beholder 1 & 2 were among my absolute favourite games for Amiga. Somehow missed out on this one back in the day. Black Crypt is very similar to DM & EOB but also has many own ideas and technically it is very well done. If you liked DM and EOB, do yourself a favour and play this! View all comments (99)
radioman9702010-09-11 Nice to read appreciation for this. I was happy to have something like this after beating the DMs (orig and CSB) and probably the EOBs (sans III, which I don't think ever appeared on Amiga). I remember being impressed with the sharp dungeon graphics...but maybe they were a little too sharp and not grungy enough like the other games. But still, a nice challenge, sealing this kind of game as my favorite. But I've always liked DM better than all of these. View all comments (288)
Lord_Maletoth2010-08-19 (10/10) Black Crypt is my personal favourite "first person RPG". I find it superior to Dungeon Master and the EOB series, because of its awesome graphics, incredibly original monsters and fast as well as realistic movements. Whoever could harm himself running after a dagger he just threw? Or blow himself running into the fireball he just casted? Well, that was ordinary routine in the aforementioned DM and EOB, while in Black Crypt a dagger and a fireball are as fast as they are supposed to be. Details maybe, but it's the sum of details that builds up excellence. And what about the underwater dungeons? An idea immediately copied by EOB III one year later. Puzzles and traps are hard and challenging to solve: who guessed the amount of hours of the Black War that easily? Or discovered how to defeat the hideous medusa skull without dying countless times? Black Crypt still makes me a proud Amiga user these days View all comments (54)
mk12009-11-16 (7/10) An OK dungeon crawl RPG. Gameplay is a bit repetetive though. Graphically and storywise inferior to EOBs and many other Amiga RPGs, but does have some nice touches in it. View all comments (13)

Myszaqu2008-02-09 (10/10) 3rd best RPG on Amiga after Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master II. Thanks God, that in polish version (maybe in other versions too?) there was included a complete solution with maps. Playin' with it was difficult, i couldn't imagine doing this without a solution Masterpiece of thrill. View all comments (56)
Jameswall2007-08-29 (8/10) I used to love this game, I used to the like thrill of falling into the ogre bit on level 2 and then trying to run away from him. I can still here those thud, thud sounds now. View all comments (11)
bladerunnercutter2007-03-24 (10/10) I first played this game on my Amiga 500, and it totally blew me away ! Sound is incredible even by todays standards, and the graphics are equally the same. :p This game bathes you in it's atmoshphere. Carressing you in sights and sounds previously unknown to the Amiga at the time, or at least me. Auto map IS available only through casting a spell " wizard sight" and you can see the areas you go through. But if you do not continue to cast it then you will lose the ability to see the map. If this happens , then any area you go through without it active , you will not map that area. Any area you map, will always return upon casting the spell. :p . I still go through and play this game every other month in " WINUAE " , If you have not played this game yet , I suggest you find a way . It's worth the effort !!!!!!!! View all comments (1)
GuitarDude2006-10-25 (8/10) This game caught me between Dungeon Master and Eye Of The Beholder and was my fave genre for a few months. I remember finding scrolls with just crap on them, with the head boss just taunting you. I remember feelingthat sense of satisfaction when I finally beat him, but that black knight that was defending the final level before the head boss being exceedingly difficult to beat. DrFred- There is automapping if you cast the spell "Wizard sight"
Zebub- You need to find a scroll with a high level "Remove Glyph". If I remember correctly you have to kill the two-headed ogre first. Before doing that you need the "ogre blade" View all comments (19)
