This has a lot to recommend it, including being the smoothest running FPS on a stock machine, having proper diagonal corners, nice graphics, CD32 pad support, and good blasting action. And incredibly, a 2 player co-op mode using a single Amiga (in addition to a deathmatch option if you link up 2 Amigas). The lack of any height change/stairs, even of the 2.5D type, the lack of any on-screen weapon (until Gloom Deluxe came along), and the balls of light that you fired were a bit unsatisfying. The enemies were large and superb, unlike Fears. As with all Amiga FPS games, you chose your compromises to suit your tastes. I did buy and play it to death at the time (though never completed it).

Poor old Amiga owners! No Doom! Not until well after Doom fever was well and truly over. Ah well, Gloom was a really good stab at a Doom clone. It isn't anywhere near as accomplished on a technical nor professional level, but it is really good fun. Fans of the Alien films will recognise most of the sound effects from the films, and the game has a great sense of humour, which is incredible since it must have been very frustrating to work on an engine that can't hold a candle to Doom. I can't applaud Black Magic software enough for this. I love the mini games, and still remember the feeling of accomplishment when I got to the Gothic tomb levels.

Gloom comes with a fun meta-game in which you have to guess from which scenes in the movie Aliens the sounds were ripped. So far I have identified Bishop's screaming when he is ripped apart, the noises of the exosuit cargo-loader, and the sound of the door through which the marines enter the LV-426 colony.

Graphics are a bit Blocky and the controls with a joystick are bad. Use the keyboard.

I only had the demo, but it was smooth and awesome.

Loved this game, really simple and playable. The transparent ghost monsters used to make me jump out of my seat and the squelchy SFX were pretty gruesome to say the least. The cumulative visual and aural effect of killing a large group of enemies at the same time was truly incredible to behold! It was the first game I bought for my new A1200, a really exciting time. However, I think playing it now would make my eyes ache...

Gloom is terrific fun. It's a shoot-em-up in first-person, as opposed to a first-person shooter (if you see what I mean) and as such shouldn't be compared to Doom. You're always on your toes - there's action around every corner and there's loads of secret areas to explore. The only let-down is the two-player deathmatch mode, but other than that it's exciting and great fun to play.

Good and fast even on 020+fastmem. Better than others.

Nice shoot'em up but don't expect some kind of a Doom follower.

This was actually OK, wasn't the best shoot em up out but it had nice enough GFX & decent sound.
