Played the first time (A500 version). Not bad, expected worse. The music is great.

I have only recently found this game and I have to say I really like it. Miles better than any of the Outrun games and the Crazy Cars trilogy and certainly comparable to Lotus or Jaguar.

Overall I think its worth anyone's time checking out. 8/10

This is a terrible game, it comes many years after THE best Amiga car racing game from Gremlin called Lotus Challenge II, and it is inferior. The screen update is Atari ST quality at its fastest and the music is inferior to that found on Lotus III or Zool 2.

There is nothing to recommend about this game, if you have played Lotus II to death on your Amiga and Lotus III on your CD32 (screen update on CD32 version is vastly improved than A500 floppy release and happily as fast as Lotus II) then there isn't too much else worth playing. You could go for XJ220 or F17 challenge but certainly not this sub-standard quality racer that is inferior to the illustrious Lotus trilogy also from Gremlin. I would have refused to publish this game.

If they had used this game engine to port OutRun back in 1988 I would have accepted it, but seeing this one run on AGA hardware in 1994, years after Jaguar XJ220, Crazy Cars 3 and the Lotus series was a bit embarrassing. Technically it is inferior to all of them, from the gross hit detection to the risible atmospheric effects, jerky drawing routines and poor sound effects (not to mention the selection between those and music, would anyone mind putting those onboard 2 MB RAM to use?).

The arcade-like gameplay kind of saves the day for Top Gear 2. I had to admit it stands rather well on that front, although after 12 races at Pro skill level I began to feel bored. Are there really 64 tracks on this one?

Anyway: an acceptable game, but not much use on this platform at the time it came out. Perhaps you're better off playing it on SNES, you also get the first Top Gear there...

Quite good racer. Nothing revolutionary, but fun to play. Button mapping for Nitro (blue) is in my opinion bit misplaced. Why not in example one of a pad's shoulder buttons?

Rating: 7½

Checked the manual for the game in HOL-database, and there is written on page 2: "WARNING: DO NOT PLAY TRACK 1 OF THIS GAME CD ON ANY AUDIO CD PLAYER."

Who says this isn't as good as lotus? I think its every bit as good. Its nice been able to buy upgrades for the car which adds more to the game then just racing. The racings good, the night time races can be challenging. The comments the driver makes are quite entertaining. The worst part to this game is the graphics, but they aren't that bad.

I personally think this is an excellent game!! But then I haven't played the Lotus series... Yet! This reminds me of C64 racing games just slightly better graphics, but they were all perfectly playable! Graphics on this are colourful if a little blocky... Music is brilliant, but more than two music tracks would have been nice, but they are great anyway!
Sound effects are dull if you select them rather than music.

Going against the grain here, but 9/10 from me...!

Average. There is nothing more to say about this game except for the fact I mentioned at Lotus as well. Beeing overtaken (and hit) by a computer car even in the narrow passages does not stop or slow them down. You on the other side slow down everytime you hit another car.

Why, indeed. What else do you need but Lotus on Amiga?

This is a SNES conversion. Probably the manager who decided that this should be done had never seen Lotus 1-3. There was no Top Gear 1 on the Amiga, but it exists for the SNES - a kind of 'cartoon version' of Lotus for small kids.

I don't understand either. This game is so reduced compared to lotus, and nothing has changed from TopGear 1 .

I really don't understand why Gremlin released this game, when 4 years earlier they released a game (Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge) which was miles ahead of this in every department?! Graphics are very mediocre and the speed is questionable. Why-o-why?!

Graphics: 6/10
Sound: 6/10
Playability: 5/10

Overall: 5/10

They tried to gather from Lotus success once again, but the result was this unhappy attempt.
