One of the best arcade for amiga
View all comments (15)
It would have been a decent conversion of a nice arcade game.
Yet:
- It lacks an entire level
- Hidden bonus disappeared
- The control system is broken: in order to launch grenades (which used a different button in the arcade and C64 versions) here you have to move the joystick down and hit "fire". This means that you'll be continously spreading and wasting grenades.
Too bad.
Try the (european) C64 version.

Graphics are nice, sound is horrible, controls are even more horrible. In overall as a coin-up conversion it does not play bad - probably because by design the game does not contain any scrolling. It is rather above the average one screen shooter in "Operation Wolf" style. However it is strange that Amiga version contains only four levels instead of original five.

I remember this was a nice conversion

I liked playing it as a kid, more than operation wolf/Thunderbolt.

Dat victory dance.

Nice arcade conversion that I played for a few weeks. Another one of those rare games that didn't disappoint me on the Spectrum -> Amiga transition. Another winner from Ocean France.

'Cabal' is one of my favourite on C64. The Amiga version is o.k. But it's not a great game. Sometimes the control sucks so if you can chose: Check it out on C64...

The arcade was one of my all time favs. This? An average game. If you could go back in 1989 it gets a 7 for not being possible to play the arcade for free. Now it's just a 5. And that's too much. If you ask a console user he would rate it for 2 or 3.

It's just a poor conversion...no big deal...everyone did a start with the arcade version and stayed there...

An Amiga game that has better graphics and music than the arcade version! Unfortunately, it has bad controls (grenades are launched by pressing down + fire, which happens by mistake all the time), but you get lots of grenade extras. The arcade version has more animations, more extra guns (but less grenade extras) and more levels.

A farcry from its hilarious arcade father, yet the fun's still there. Too bad all those great games were poorly converted
I'm only picking it because its sequel, Blood bros, wasn't ported.

Cabal is a crosshair shooter in the line of Operation Wolf. I remember playing this the first time on the C64 and being totally blown away by the game. Here was a game where you could destroy (almost) everything onscreen! When I played Cabal later on in my life on the Amiga I wasn't so gobsmacked as when playing the 64 version. The graphics are a bit disappointing and although the sound effects are pretty good with gun rattles and explosions all around, the music becomes irritating pretty fast. Gameplay-wise Cabal is fine. If you like a good blast, this is a good game for you. The thing I thought was nice, is that you see yourself at the bottom of the screen, so while emptying your guns you should also evade enemy bullets. The biggest fault, I guess, is that Cabal just isn't much fun for a very long time.
Graphics: 6/10
Sound: 6/10
Playability: 6/10
Overall: 6/10

A very simple but quite addictive action game, Cabal is like Operation Wolf except that you actually see your soldier on the screen and has to manually evade the enemy fire. The graphics are not outstanding, but colourful and it's a nice feature that you can destroy almost everything on the screen including watchtowers, buildings etc. The music is not too good in itself, but you won't notice it in the game as it's tense and adrenaline-pumping enough. The gameplay seems hard at places until you realize that all enemies can only fire to certain points and all you have to do is to find the "relatively safe" position on every screen and only concentrate on enemies who are dangerous to your location. Overall, it's not a great game by any means but can be fun for a few hours.

I never really understood what made this game so great. A friend of mine used to play it to death, and wouldn't put anything else on. I guess that may contribute to my negative attitude here - I wasn't a fan in the first place, and I was forced to watch another guy play it for ages.
Naturally I don't really like it.

A honest conversion, enjoyable, it was fun to make the house collapse like in the coin-op

A bowling alley where I grew up had the arcade of this, and it was such a weird, obscure game that I was completely surprised when I found out that Ocean were converting it. Once the conversion arrived I loved it - captured the feel of the arcade perfectly, especially with two people.
I never played the machine at the bowling alley again after I got this :-). Granted, it's a very silly game with almost no longevity, but it's one of the few arcade conversions on the Amiga that actually *feels* like the arcade. Nice. 6/10.

The coin-up was great.. I spent alot of money on it back then.. Even the "C64" version was playable, saddly this one wasn't though!

I don't want to like this game. Graphics are below average, sounds are not very inspiring and the gameplay is very repetitive. But it's fun!

A good shoot 'em up. Average graphics but killing, destroying and dodging is fun anyway. Lots of different buildings, objects and enemies...

Simply game, but it was fun. Shooting all moving objects and even buildings. Was much more fun with unlimited ammo!

I hated this game. It felt like shooting ducks over and over and over and over and....

Yeah, this was one of the Amiga games I liked to play in those days. Not the best, but a nice one.

Agree on the 2 player aspect with stjack, me and my bro had hilarious times on this game and I still laugh at the crap animation of them running into the distance when you finsh a level! Nice little shooter!

Play CABAL with a firend and you´ll have a lot of fun. It´s not as bad an many comments you´ll read about CABAL. Only to throw grenades is a little bit tricky. The rest ist very fine.

Strange game. I normally don't like shoot-em-ups, and especially those like Cabal. Yet this has something in the game that keeps you playing it over and over again. Nothing special as far as gameplay, sound or graphics are concerned, but it has its appeal. I gave it an 8, and for me, that's very generous for a shooter.

Intense game. Keeps you on your toes. Works best in 2 player mode. Very good indeed.

Quite a good shoot 'em up game, good sounds especially the music, bit funny too.

This game was a lot of fun, silly end of level celebratory dancing aside.

One really fun game to play me and my brother used to hammer the 2 player

The graphics for this are pretty laughable, with a very old-fashioned and rough-edged look, and the advantage of having a visible playing sprite on screen is reduced by the lack of a roll movement (although it makes it less of a generic Operation Wolf clone). Average at best.

Never played the coin-op original, but this was a nice fast paced shooter with good controls. No classic, but a decent game in its own right.

Oh, this is fun! They don't make games like this anymore. Not a straight port of arcade version but a great game on its own right. The arcade original is ugly and easy while the Amiga version looks nice, plays well and has just the right learning curve up to real challenge.

Rather than trying to replicate a graphics-heavy coin-operated machine, the Amiga version of Cabal adopted a radically different graphical style, especially when it came to the colour scheme. And it worked. The fun is still there, even if it's not particularly long-lasting, just as it happened with the arcade original.

Single handedly massacre the army of a small South American country leaving a trail of devestation in your wake. For no apparent reason. Utterly mindless and really quite entertaining. If you're into that kind of thing.

This game is very fun and hard at the same time. Was first made for Commodore 64/128 and the Amiga version has better graphics, but still the same gameplay!
