I'd rather Ocean had re-adapted their earlier game on the GX4000/CPC+ with the same name - well, nearly: that one was Burnin' Rubber - since there was no WEC Le Mans on the Amiga, rather than this below-average contribution to the quickly saturating street racing market.

Awesome intro, though: nothing you couldn't find in the demoscene but, If anything, "I Want You" does fit the mood. The feeling that much more money went into licensing the song than into game development still lingers...

Actually mailman 90 degree turns were seen before in cisco heat. As for this game it was okay - maybe a bit on the easy side, certainly on the early european courses. 6/10

Graphics and music are alright. The problem is how to mark the playability. You can choose different routes that will guide you from a start to an end of the course. Opponents may choose a different route so it can be challenging. The thing that could be seen here for the first time are 90 degrees turnings that makes the game a little bit different thus making it something more or less than a racer. Steering is a bit dogdy but the enhancements made in a shop could easily straighten this matter. Ten cars to select from that differs from each other are also an appealing issue.

Certainly this is not a game for hardcore "Lotus" fans who enjoy racing against time. Although the game has some fresh ideas it is also lacking something that you can easily name it as a breaking the mould thing.

Good game but nothing more... And you need to really tune yourself into it because it is nothing like you have seen before.

I recommend playing AGA version since it has more music tunes and additional information about race position during the play. ECS version does not contain this.

10/10 for presentation alone, a lot of work went into this. The actual gameplay I found pretty fun, a better racer than most but it failed just short by lacking a certain something. Maybe it was just too simple.

It was promising and everyone believed that it could compete Test Drive or even the Lotus series...not even close...Only the intro was good...oh and the utah saints music...the saints proved again that they were ahead of their time

It's all quite promising right up until the game actually starts, at which point the whole thing goes badly wrong; it's sort of a cross between the Amiga versions of Cisco Heat and Outrun -- terrible graphics, awful car handling, and no sensation of speed or of being actually connected to the road to the extent it often feels like the car is just moving about at random or is manifesting quantum uncertainty as it manically switches from one side of the track to the other with no apparent need to cross the intervening distance.

It's not a total loss, though -- I'm a big Utah Saints fan, so if I consider it as a reasonable (if derivative) demo with some nice music plus three spare floppies it doesn't seem quite so bad. (Still awful, though. )

I agree, the game was absolute pap and the gfx were nothing special either, but we did have fun making the intro. Can still spot myself and a few others jumping about like idiots.

Burning Rubber is a total rip off and it borrows its contents from a couple of other games! This makes the feel of this game very cheap. The in-game sounds are exactly the same as in Lotus for example! And that girl in the shop, doesn't she look just like the shop girl in Super Cars? The loading screens are very Lotus-esque and the intro with music from Utah Saints... Just download the State Of The Art demo by Spaceballs and you see a much better version of this disco-thing! But, I don't think a rip off is bad per se, because look at Jaguar XJ220! Although that isn't as good as Lotus, it still manages to be a very good game in its own right, with some nice new features. As a game Burning Rubber just isn't very well executed. And if you want to patch a game together with ideas from some other games, you have to do this in a good way or else you are left with just a bad copy. The graphics are mediocre, I've seen better in many other racing games. The in-game sounds irritated me, because of their likeness to the Lotus-sounds. If you make a game, at least take the time to create your own sounds! And as for the gameplay, although the car response is okay, you just don't get the feeling that you really have total control. It all feels a little bland. All in all, I think you are better off playing a better arcade racer like Lotus, Jaguar of even Crazy Cars 3.

Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 5/10
Playability: 6/10

Overall: 6/10

The Intro! I put that game in my Amiga only because of the intro. It was just awesome and I always thought about displaying that in some sort of disco or on a party. But I was a kid.
But uhm.. The game itself is quite mediocre. Which is a pity since I really dig the graphics (Especially the car graphics, when you choose your car). And when I look at it today... Why the hell did they put that intro before a game like that?

Yes the idea was OK and the variety of cars was something for that time but the execution was just terrible comparing it with the "lotus" games.

Lots of different cars, many racetracks. Nice idea, but the graphics are mediocre at best and the gameplay is below standart.

This wasn't a great game at all, sub standard GFX and terrible gameplay the only thing decent was the music I think especially at the beginning, kicking off with Utah Saints intro and so on by Tim Haywood (a guy based in the north east, someone I know of)
