Had promise but was spoilt by stooopid difficulty. When at uni doing comp.sci one of us had the Atari ST version of this and we cracked it, making everything easier and renaming all the islands to "amusing" names such as "Bogblocka" and others much worse! Ah memories.

Carrier Command was mindblowing at the time. The player leads a campaign to conquer a number of islands in a realtime 3D environment. The carrier you control can launch boats and flying drones. You can switch to the viewpoint of any vehicle at any point in the game. It will take some time before you are able to navigate all the different controls, but it will be worth the effort.

Excellent 3D graphics. You could also switch to the view camera of any of your drones to get a 3D view of what is going on. There was a lot of depth and atmosphere to this game.

The other carrier appears to cheat by being extremely fast at taking islands. The best way to complete the game is just to destroy the enemy carrier near the start by giving it everything you've got. If they slowed the other carrier down a little it would be hard to find a flaw with this game.

Interesting concept. If memory serves, you could finish the game quickly by confronting the enemy carrier, crashing all your probe vessels onto it guns blazing and finishing the job with the deck gun or colliding your carrier into it.

I guess this wasn't the way it was meant to be played, because it completely by-passed the whole island conquering bit. Taking control of islands was fun, but the enemy carrier seemed to do the same job at a much faster pace and would eventually overwhelm you.

For me, it was the perfect game. I spent way too many hours (months) playing this. I think it was the first "sandbox" type computer game I ever experienced (not counting Elite). As in, you were very free to go or do what you liked. That is, until my islands turned red as they were overrun!

Once you got the hang of it though, it became easy to spot "gaps" in the AI and exploit it; taking out the enemy carrier in the first few minutes of the game at a key location became the norm. The enemy AI fell for traps and diversions far too easy. The sheer fun of the game-play though, learning by trial and error to get to that point... Finally "putting it all together" in a combined coordinated professional-type assault/strike was the beauty of it.

Futuristic air, land and sea carrier ops w/ amphibious landings on volcanic islands, fighting a rogue AI where critical strategic decisions and logistics in the resource supply chains can win or lose the war? Count me in!

If you didn't already know, Bohemia Interactive (ArmA II, etc.) are making a remake called 'CARRIER COMMAND: GAEA MISSION'. Looks promising! Saying that, I suspect the finished game if/when released in the Western World will drop the "GAEA" word? For obvious "commercial" reasons? Maybe they'll rename their "Gay-er" sounding title to the less ambiguous "Gaia" spelling (for the benefit of their potential young American customers?)...

I thought of this game last year when I picked up Battle Stations Midway for Windows. That's a really fun game where you control everything. Probably a good recommendation for fans of this old game. Note that this recommendation is coming from someone who STILL has yet to try this old game at least. Of course, Battle stations has a sequel as well that looks just as good.

Still can't rate...but soon...

I liked the laser turret on the top of the carrier. It had the magnify glass, which was fun to use just for observing the islands. But unfortunatelly - the game simply cheated, which was so annoying that prevents me to play it more.

I won't vote on this either. Really, it's a game I wanted to buy (since I usually bought everything from this company) but I just never got around to it. By the time I remembered it was around, there were other (perhaps) similar games like Armageddon that I'd gotten into heavily. Reading the comments below is interesting and I certainly wish I'd bought this game when I first got my A500.

Complex mixture of action, simulation and strategy. The graphics have aged a bit but nevertheless, everybody should've played this at least once.

One of the classic positions. The most absorbing in this game is possibility of strategic control over the land and when there is a need you can sit in the cockpit and fly Manta or sail Walrus by yourself.

A unique game on the Amiga. Certainly it has its flaws, foremost of all the cheating enemy carrier. Still, you got your own armed carrier with landing crafts, controllable fighters, a large playground, basic resource management, an enemy AI carrier doing the same as you, and all of it in real-time! Granted, having the manual helped alot getting into the game ... It's a 10/10, folks!

For a short while I found this incredibly absorbing. Certainly there were some very good ideas behind the game. Apparently a few years back there was a modern 'tribute' for the PC called Hostile Waters.

Excellent. I wonder why this was made for the C64. You had to have an Amiga to really see what this game was about. Great old classic.

Carrier Command was a stunning game that was way ahead of it's time, iroically this was it's downfall too, being so far ahead that corners had to be cut so the old Miggy could take the pressure.

The problems were that the bad guy carrier had to resort to cheating to be competitive, it could sail through islands and move faster than one of your Mantas (Jet Planes).

That aside, you could just play the game attacking islands, flying mantas around, driving walrus' aroud and it was quite fun for an hour or so even if you didn't do anything.

There is a remake in the pipeline that could be of interest to anyone who loved this game, find it here: [www] It seems to be addressing all of the short comings of the original and added quite a few extras. Log onto it's forum to get all the low down.

Another one of those "If I had bought this game and had the manual I might have understood it and enjoyed it" type of games !

For this reason I won't vote, but I heard it was good.,
