Classic, if repetitive, platformer with the Amiga version being probably the best rendition. Great cartoony graphics, bouncy tune and good spot fx. 9/10

And Treesong is correct, I was definitely playing this in 1991.

I like this platform game a lot. I remember to have played it in 1991 (not 1992 as it is mentionned in the description).
Very playable, quite funny, with a good progression of the difficulty, Chuck rock is a nice Core Design release.
A good use of the Amiga chipset : a dual playfied smooth scrolling with sprites and blitter objects. The music was nice (with less than 50kb if i remember well).
There is a nice intro.
A good Amiga platform game.

Anachronistic cavemen were ubiquitous in the 90s and, among many prehistoric titles, Chuck Rock has become a somehow iconic game for the Amiga. This is strange enough since its color palette looks reminiscent of the Atari ST and there are versions, like the Megadrive one, that look, sound and play undoubtedly better. Chuck Rock on the Amiga has all the flaws commonly found in the Commodore machine's action games: limited frame rate, bad collisions, up to jump, no continues, no simultaneous sounds and music, one single (obnoxius in this case) ditty. All issues successfully addressed in the Megadrive version, by the way. But at the end of the day even on the Amiga the scenery is very much alive, the action is satisfying and there is some addictive quality. Once the controls and collisions are mastered Chuck Rock is good fun (7/10).

Dan Locke in his comment hit it straight in the face and I fully agree. This is a highly OVERrated platformer. Gameplay is rather limited because levels are quite short and tricky however this is not a problem. The biggest one is the lack of checkpoints and any level password system. Level bosses are really difficult because it is very difficult to figure out the way how to kill them. Completing the game without any tricks in one go is a real chore and you need to repeat the whole thing many times and for me this is a suicide for the platformer.

Graphics are well-drawn but the colour pallete is dark-ish and grey-ish like there were no bright colours available. There is also lack of contrast between background and the main gameplay field what can make some players a bit perplexed. The character and enemies are big and rich in details but they do not have a lot of animation frames however they move smoothly. The music tune in the title screen is catchy but having it through the whole game is simply unbearable. You may of course turn it off and replace with sound effects but they are in scarce and most of the time all you hear is silence...

Overall - the idea was nice but the presentation and realisation - not so much. Although a lot of effort was put into this game, there are some flaws that exclude this game from being good. It is for me quite unexplainable what is so special about this title that so many people praise it so much.

I liked this one very much when I first got it. It was a very good, challenging but fair platformer with a great intro, good graphics and a fine presentation. The music was very good as were the sound FX. The playability was original and very well balanced. It had some nifty touches and an overall originality to it (disposing of enemies using your belly? Ahah!) that captivated me right away. If a fault has to be pointed at it, it must be the "up for jump" thing oh-so common on Amiga platformers.

A competent platformer but very little else for me.

Very fun and nice looking level design and although repetitive the games music and intro sequence is pretty memorable and funny. The character designs and animations are fun to watch.

Definitely takes its inspiration from a certain tv show, as well as other games in its genre. Chuck Rock was one of my favourite platformers as a kid but its definitely lost some of its sheen from my 'adult' point of view. I also still prefer Prehistorik if we're going for caveman related platformers.

Having seen how much everyone else loved this game, I went into it with high expectations. To put it charitably, I was extremely disappointed.

The people here rave about the game's "humor". What? What humor? Is it the hysterical googly eyes on the enemies? The side-splitting cartoony voices? The uproarious dinosaur droppings? Come on; this stuff is infantile at best. Even the intro is completely devoid of anything approaching good comic timing.

Supposedly, the music is also great. Really? It's the ugliest, scratchiest guitar sample imaginable, repeated non-stop throughout the entire game. Please, no.

And the graphics, praised as they are, don't deserve an ounce of the respect that they get. They're washed-out, grainy, dull, and unacceptably dark; it's like wearing three pairs of sunglasses. Everything is flat and amateurishly-shaded, and animation is barely present. Honestly, it's hard to think of a more hideous commercially-released game.

But what really gets me is that it's just an awful game in its own right. It's relentlessly dull, with an inordinately slow pace, feeble enemies, cramped level designs, awkward controls, and only the weakest attempts to break up the monotony. On top of all of that, there are no checkpoints, so the player has to slog back through an entire stage after dying.

What do you people see in this piece of garbage?

I got a lot of enjoyment out of this game. The humour is brilliant throughout and the levels aren't half bad either. The graphics are very nice, and I absolutely love the theme music. A very good game with a lot of comedy and nice animation.

One of the coolest parts of this game (and it took me a while to even notice it!) is that, on the title screen, when the music is playing each of the characters in the band only play their instruments when their track is playing. For example, Gary only plays the drums when you can actually hear the drums in the music. And Ophelia even switches to the keyboard when the keyboard sound comes in. It's a simple idea but it looks really cool in the game!

Put me and my whole family under the ones who say Chuck Rocks!!

This had up laughing our asses off for hours at Christmas one year. My niece and neph were given their own Amiga and their stepdad blind bought this for them. Good call! I've always loved the game and consider it among my Top 5 fav platformers on Amiga. Top notch, really. And the music is a real toe tapper. I bought the CD32 version for myself.

9/10-both versions.

Btw, seems like the dino-poop is removed from a console version... Sega or SNES? Poor saps. That's one of the funniest parts!

Interesting to see a central villain based on Gary Glitter described as the "local weirdo" in the opening-sequence who differs from his notorious real-life counterpart by taking an interest in Chuck's adult wife...

That aside, this is an excellent platform game with good graphics, some simple puzzles thrown into the mix and terrific music on the title screen (although it's better to turn it off when playing and stick to the in-game effects including Chuck's famous "unga bunga!").

Somehow I liked these platformer, even though it's rock hard and I never came far in the game. Good, but not great.

Great platformer and I admired the title screen music until I discovered that it's basically a pure ripoff. The original song is titled "Wishbone Ash - Phoenix", from their first album, released in year 1970. Lovely song and the Chuck Rock title is a nice cover but sucks that it's a rip off (as far as I know, Matthew Simmonds took all the credit for the song).

It is not the best, but sure one of the best platform on Amiga, two layers of backgrounds, clean graphic, cartoon style, a lot of touches of class, funny to play, I don't give it 10 just cause you cant have Music and Sound FX at the same time

8.8/10

I was really looking forward to trying this, but came away feeling very disappointed. Okay the Graphics are near excellent but the gameplay is boring. The controls are very hard to to get to grips with and I gave up on this one after a short time. A let-down!

One of the essential Amiga platformers. Very nice graphics and lots of imaginative monsters and other ideas (I like dinosaur ferries and shitting brontosaurus). End-of-level monsters and intro are very nice too. And oh yes, the Matthew Simmond's intro music is a good guitar MOD. A great game.

Games like this used to really appeal to me before I got an Amiga - speech, nice graphics, digitized sound, "Oonga - Boonga"!!! A bit boring now but good for it's time.
