This game absolutely has the coolest intro of any Amiga game. Gameplay I am not so sure, must look into it a bit more....

Very good-looking and interesting concept but badly executed in the gameplay area, so it never got me hooked for long. I always wished it had because the idea sounds very appealing to me.
Maybe you should give it a try and judge it yourself.

'Asteroids on steroids' describes it quite well. I never liked Asteroids but always liked Cosmic Pirate, though.
Yes, the speed is frantic and the visible area is too small, which results in untimely deaths, many of them. But the overall idea and concept are nice and well done and it's still worth a round or two.
I still like the 'flow' of the game, which sends you out to capture some whale-style space truck, that's always several sectors away. You need to plow through hordes of snake-things, rival spaceships and whatnot, frantically picking up their pill-shaped leftovers (which yield credits, repairs, etc.) to reach the jump gates. Then bring down the truck's defenses and steer it back to the base. Good, fast-paced arcade action with a little depth - one of my favourite shooting games, back then.

After reading a review in a game mag I purchased Cosmic Pirate at full price. Liked the intro and the music, but lost interest after a short time. The game options were good (like upgrading your ship at the pirate base), but the game itself was too hectic. All the enemies were coming directly at you with light speed and bouncing off your shields, so fast that even the small radar screen at the top was of little assistance. Auto-fire helped a bit. Design-wise a good-looking game, but the concept isn't working (for me, at least). Asteroids on steroids

Oh no, I have forgotten too much about this to give my final judgement. I remember I liked this a bit, but I lost my interest quite soon. It was first interesting but did not have so much to offer in long run.

One of my fav games ever, seriously under-rated and never mentionred in list of classic games. If you've never played this, give it a go - You won't be disappointed
