Two drag queens with wild 80s hair beating the shit out of everyone. I don't understand why it wasn't possible to climb up platforms in this version. Despite the poor presentation (already poor back then and aged even worse) I played this game a lot back then and completed it.

A very mere shadow of its arcade counterpart. The game is playable and quite repetitive in a fighting technique. Graphics are very childish, a lot of animation frames are skipped and the character seems to be rather floating then walking. Below average - It would be good if Amiga had been an 8-bit machine.

I remember getting this in a pack, I think it was called the Hollywood Collection (why Double Dragon was included I don't know). I was a real die hard Double Dragon fan growing up, and used to play it at a Caravan Holiday Park in Kent.
Imagine my surprise when this poor man's Public Domain attempt booted up! Well actually first impressions were good the intro looked OK and it had sampled arcade music, but for some reason not from the actual intro, but level one stage (and incomplete).
Anyway moving on, it starts to load. The screen appears and it starts to move, I felt like chucking the floppy out of the window! This is like they took a 8-bit version, and they simply enhanced the colours (cough, cough Amstard CPC version).
The sound is actually worse, no music. Sound effects when they die, sounds like they are throwing up, as for the hit effects I have no idea were they got them from, but it doesn't sound right.
This is a complete joke, another game that was rushed for Christmas, apparently the programmers had found a way of capturing sprites from the arcade using a camera, but this method was scrapped, and we were left with the Deluxe Paint and mouse job.
Avoid this at all costs, the only half decent version was on the Mega drive and even that was not perfect. All I know is a 1MEG A500 version could have done this game justice, but it was too early in the life cycle for a 1MEG version. What a shame.

A mere shadow of the arcade version, but still fairly enjoyable. Why do the characters look so goofy? Why didn't ANY home system of the time get a decent port of this game? The only way to play a faithful version is to use MAME.
DD2 is far better on the Amiga, but stay away from DD3 on any platform.

To be honest ... This game is badly executed in nearly all ways possible.
But to be honest again ... Me and a friend kept playing it on an on ... And did really enjoy it. One of the games that truly suck if you look at it realistically but can be quite good fun when playing with a comrade ...
With the possibilities of being available to nowadays computers via M.A.M.E. You should better go play the original Arcade Version and it could be you will have quite some fun with it.

The Master System Version Was Better.. Much Better.

As a game, this was inferior to the PC EGA version and even the Spectrum version gave me more fun than the Amiga version did. The graphics weren't bad (in fact, they were the best of all the 16bit computer versions) and the title music was catchy, but the action was slow and sluggish and - worse of all - the controls were very iffy and unreliable. Because it didn't suffer from any of this, the PC version gave me much more enjoyment than this did, despite its graphic and sonic inferiority.

If there is a list of favourite games, then there should be one for the worst games. This is of the latter. Very poor conversion of an arcade classic.

OMG I have completed the game in about 30 mins. What a bad game is Double Dragon for Amiga

Just have a look in the Megadrive version, a machine that is close to the Amiga, to see what could have been. Amiga DD looked like an Amstrad CPC game in better resolution. What a waste.
However the background graphics are fine.

This was one of the biggest disappointment in my life. I was a great fan of Double Dragon at the time and I was sure the Amiga had all the potential for a flawless conversion. When I saw this shitty thing I couldn't believe my eyes. In order to realize what this game could have been you just have to take a look at another 68000-based system, the Megadrive. It's a perfect conversion, and the Amiga's one could have been even better by using sampled sounds. But Melbourne House was the phantom of his former self by then, no more being the great team which brought to us "The Way of the Exploding Fist". It'd rather be developed by a japanese software house (they know how to handle beat'em ups there...), unfortunately japanese software houses had no interest whatsoever in the Amiga.

Double Dragon was one of my favourite arcades, so I just bought the conversion for Amiga without hesitation. Disappointing. Bad graphics, slow and unfaithful to the original. Let's launch Mame

Not so good.

The Amiga hardware could have given us much more on this game. It was just a lazy conversion. Beautiful coloured but in terms of gameplay, variety of attacks......It´s overweighted of laziness on the programmer´s hand, in my opinion.
Double dragon is a "must have" 4 sure but in this conversion, I apply the same criterion I chose to "judge" out run: "must see and should avoid"
This is simply an improved spectrum version. Coloured and a bit faster but only a bit...

At a first glance, it would seem we've got good old Double Dragon here: the entire set of moves, two-player mode, use of weapons, interaction with the surroundings and colorful graphics are all there.
Then you start playing it and find out how terribly wrong you were: tiny, jerky sprites most of which are just palette-swapped Billys, continuous slowdowns, no ingame music and a total of FOUR demented sound effects (just listen to the guys puke when they are killed) and more bugs and crashes than a bad programmer could even willingly introduce.
The enemy AI ranges from suicidal to comical: you can get most of the baddies to fall down a manhole right in front of them, or with their face right into your baseball bat.
You get to the final level without any effort whatsoever, and all of a sudden it becomes irritating: not because of stronger or smarter enemies - they're still dumber than a pack of Lemmings - but because of the traps, which are lethal and, as opposed to the arcade version, strike in a completely random and unpredictable way, without any forewarning whatsoever. That's where you start losing lives without it being your fault.
To make matters worse, you can get hit by a spear even after walking past it, thanks to the terrible hit detection routines. Still, they are not impossible to get through, and after that the rest is piece of cake (except that you can't figure out when the Shadow Boss is firing at you).

Hadn't played this in over 15 years and I completed it first time. Too easy, and very dull. The mix of moves and weapons available is nice, and would be more fun in 2 player mode. Lack of music is a shame. Some very annoying obstacles on the last level. I'd say the NES version is better.

I played it only because I was a fan of the series

Crappy conversion, but it was Double Dragon, and we played a lot. Hated that you couldn't climb the ladders to the top levels, and the missing animations featured in the coin-op.

Hmmmm... Where do I start? This was a real pocket money eater in the arcades for me in the summers of 87/88 so you can imagine I was stoked to hear there was an Amiga version in the pipeline! It was a "I want this one for Crimbo" type of games and I remember playing it early on Xmas morning. As I liked the game so much I played it regardless of the graphics and sound and found it an OK venture, however a pet hate for me was programmer laziness, ie port it across directly from the ST! Overall a mediocre game that was too easy to finish.

Lacks the whole feel of the arcade, an OK little game though

Looking past the C64-ish graphics, the control system is wretched and ruins the gameplay. An appalling game.

I think this is an acceptable conversion. Admittedly, the graphics leave something to be desired and the sounds are laughable. On the other hand, there are no serious gameplay issues. Getting to play a home computer version was awesome, even if it felt empty and lifeless compared to the arcade.

Some problems with gameplay and graphics but good enough for playing. Maybe it was that "aagh!" sound that enemies shout when they die, that made the game enjoyable enough. This was the first fighting game I played and because of that I was very excited. There was even that lady with a whip...

Although the game was a bit poor on the conversion side I still thought the game was OK with some touches

Enjoyed very much back in the days. Although it was a piss poor conversion to be honest. The amiga500 could have handled it gracefully, if the the sequel is anything to go by, damn incompetent(lazy?) developers.

The arcade was brilliant. And after seeing it being slaughtered on the C64, I remember being really impressed by this one. I thought this was as close to the arcade it could get. It's not brilliant, but I give it a 7.

Lacking music and an overall "arcade feel", this is one of those games that felt really cool when it first came out, but just doesn't stand the test of time well. While the arcade retains some of its original "coolness", the Amiga port feels a little bit more stale every day.

I remember this in the arcade fondly. People would be lined up for a go. If someone came along and put a couple of coins on the glass it meant that they were next and you'd better not continue!
When the home versions came out we cried... And then went back to the Arcade.

I love this on the C64 and the Amiga version is superb too. Great gameplay and the two-player mode is killing fun !

Come on. This is not that bad. It was even fun to play with a friend. Not a masterpiece but ok.

Ive played this game when I used to have my ATARI ST. It was crap. The AMIGA version is no better...I think the C=64,NES, and the ATARI 7

Not as sad as the C64 version, but too damn close for comfort.

This is one of the crappiest arcade conversions ever. Or certainly one of the crappiest arcade conversions of one of the most popular games (at the time). See Double Dragon 2 as it was loads better.
