What a game! It got me hooked and can still remember ordering more ornihopters to ferry the spice collectors for faster productivity. It had such a wonderful atmosphere and excellent gameplay.
It hasn't aged as well due to the limited controls (you can only control one unit at a time) but it still holds a special place in my heart. Such an amazing game at the time that spawned a whole genre filled with great games.

Superb. I had no interest in strategy games or in the Dune books before this game, and it got me into both (briefly, in the case of the books). The fact that this spawned a whole genre (RTS) which is still played today with only minor tweaks to the gameplay, says it all.

Best Amiga RTS ever

The Amiga version did not have some of the speech from the PC version and there was no music apart from one ambient loop. They could have at least included the music but made it so it required 2mb of chipmem.

Dune II was the first in genre. And was great! But to be honest, it's one of the games, which I've never played again since its children has been born. I've tried it x times, but x times failed. There's no possibility to control more than one unit, what's good for those who wants more control in building a formations, but I'm already too lazy

Also my first real-time strategy game and it was brilliant. I blame poor exam results on this one!!! 10/10

The best strategy game on Amiga (at leat for me), spent hours on it...

A groundbreaking masterpiece. Dune II is an early representative of concepts like minimap, resource gathering and asymmetrical balancing of factions within the real-time strategy genre. Graphics and sound are still impressive. By todays's standards, the controls are a bit clunky and the viewport feels very limited due to the screen's low resolution. The game is also a bit too hard, at least in my opinion.

True realtime strategy at its best! If you are a fan of the Command & Conquer series on the PC, you definitely need to play Dune II to see where it all started. It embodies the spirit of the novel and puts you in control of the fate of the galaxy! 9/10

This and K240 are THE real time strategy games on the amiga, I had never played it until two months ago, it was a great experience, completed it with all three houses, had a lot of fun. I hated the Harkonnen hand of death screwing all my base, but strangely for me it was much more difficult to complete the game with the harkonnen than with the other two houses. Anyway great great game, marvelous graphic compartment, tons of playability and re-playability, style that spring up from every bit and every pixel

One of the first RTS games I played. And the inspiration for many more great games including Command & Conquer Red Alert. I Completed it many times with each house. Really loved it at the time and spent many happy hours playing it. I don't really come back to it much now as I also have Dune 2000 which I think is better and is multiplayer.

If a drug could be compared to game then DUNE II would certainly fit the bill.
I never played a RTS before Dune II so it took me some time to get the hang of it...and once I did, it refused to let me go.
Once I got home after school I immediatly felt my hands and mind itching for some dune gameplay, in my head I was making up strategies how to beat the more difficult levels...and there lies it's strength, once things got more difficult things actually became more addictive...what if I try this...aaargh that didn't work...reload....let's try this.....aaargh scratch etc... Until something worked.
Hunting for those spice spots was pure joy and misery at the same time, cursing everything if a harvester was beeing attacked....and alle the time the famous "construction complete" sentence would pronounced everytime...well...a construction was completed...
Each house had it's strengths and weaknesess, each house had it's own ethos...everthing came together worked very well in this masterpiece.
I never forget the announcement (in AF?) that the devs were working on something special...something new...based on the gameplay of dune II....called Command & Conquer...
Man......this game deserves to be in the amiga's all time top 10 PERIOD.

Spent many hours playing this over and over again. The sad but true fact is that Command & Conquer and it's many evolution control tweaks spanning 10+ years make returning to Dune II a little hard today...
With the right frame of mind and some patience the magic of Dune II can still be enjoyed as she's a beauty tho. Awesome game from that era when the world was kind to the Amiga!

An excellent game that got me into RTS games.

Dune 2 is a milestone in videogames history: the first fully playable RTS game, progenitor of C&C and all its competitors.
Frank Herbert's scenario stands in the backgorund while three Houses, Atreides, Harkonned and Ordos fight for the control of Arrakis, a desertic planets who holds the most valuable treasure in the universe: the spice.
I played hard to complete level 3 just to realize that the 6 disk pack was just a demo, so I had to wait to buy a PC to make it to the end. That was enough to rate is as one of the best games I ever played.
9/10 is my score

My first real time strategy game... And i loved it! Many many hours lost on this gem!

You have to say the AI isn't the smartest of the bunch, in that it was hellbent on following the plan "produce a unit and send it up to the player's base right away". Consequently it meant you could easily go and sabotage the AI's base by taking a curve on the way and attack from the sides and blast away at the construction yard, while stopping the enemy harvesters. Rinse and repeat. The only real threat was the harkonnen nuke in the last level - unless you played as one.

Later levels of strategy masterpiece Dune 2 were real meat grinders that could take up to a week (real time) to complete. Ensuring the immediate availability of food and drink was essential if starvation was to be avoided. Ambidextrousness was an advantage as micromanagement took it's toll on your mouse clicking fingers. Resist the temptation to go make a cup of tea because you can guarantee by the time you get back one bloke with a pistol has found a blind spot in your defence and has destroyed half your base. Don't worry about the harkonnen cruise missile. If they've fired it you've already lost.

And the game? Great. Thanks to it i've read Herbert's Dune

The godfather of realtime stratagies! Outstandingly addictive game, this is a game i keep coming back to again and again. Very suspensful, like when you see the enemy carry-all for the first time drop off some units to attack, and you start panicking! Very good indeed, i belive this game paved the way for many other games, Command and conquer for example. But this still remains the best, and in this day of flashy graphics, PS3s, Xbox 360s, this will always be the best.

Without Dune 2 there wouldn't have been the billions of rts-games which followed (and often weren't as good as the original). I think C&C without the cinematic presentation was nothing more than Dune 2. This game was excellent both technically and in its' gameplay. I think in a time when Origin, Sierra and others did bad ports from the PC Westwood did a formidable job. As well as with EOB 1 & 2 and Kyrandia.
Played this one on my A1200 with a Hard Drive and 6MB Ram and it was one of my best games for the Amiga!

Far better than the first part. Cool intro, nice graphics and a very atmospheric soundtrack. Also the chance to play with one of three 'families' was great. A very good real time strategy game (and the first one of its genre, too)...
Also unofficial prequel to C&C...

Grandfather of RTS games. Mind-blasting graphics and SFX... It was a superb suplement for Dune - the game. But in this part, everybody were playing, not only fans of Herbert's book

This was my first experince of the RTS games and what a game still like having a blast on this even today have been hooked on RTS games ever since all down to this game. I think this killed playing platformer games after this great game.exellent cut scenes reallly adictive.

One of the first true RTS games and what a blast it was to play when it was new. The genre has since moved on in ways that makes this old gem look mostly like a dusty old piece of coal, but give Dune 2000 a try and you just might be able to relive some of the fun this game delivered once when there was no StarCraft or Command & Conquer.

Like Jolly Roger said: a genre defining game! A bit slow by today's standards in its game play. Haven't played it for years, so I don't really know if it holds up, but you can't deny the influence it's had.

I hate the genre and this one was quite hard to play when it was released. I liked the gfx style and the gameplay when it was released but after 1 or 2 levels I felt that I was repeating myself and uninstalled this one from my Amiga hard drive. A year later or so I completed the game with harkonnens. Play homeworld if you want a decent RTS. 5/10 for me.

Best game ever for Amiga? A risky question but I would say it's pretty damn close!
It's a real shame C&C was never ported though...

A masterpiece from the creators of the real-time strategy genre.

The guys who wrote this say they were influenced by Herzog Zwei, a great game which was too complicated for console audiences. This is a great game whose influence was wide-ranging, and was only really topped by Starcraft.

One of the best strategy/wargames ever made and probably the one that is the most referred as "roots" for the new generation of realtime strategy. Simply H O T. The Amiga port is pretty good when you know the PC version was in 256 colours, the graphics are really nicely adapted to the 32 colours palette of the Amiga.
The sound is WAY better than the crappy PC version as well (the voices in the French version on PC were totally ridiculous, by chance they recorded all of them for the Amiga with a real actor).
Better to play it on 68020+ with some extra RAM for a better speed.
Ace!

Played the game, saw the movie, and than had to read the books..
Hey, even played it throu later on a crappy 14" blackwhite tv...
It was quite hard to see the difference between you and the enemies from time to time ...
As I write there is a Dune II challenge here [www] no deadline

Wonderful game!! I've spent many hours with this one... Nice conversion from the original, however it misses most of the speech, SFX and music that were available in the original game. Didn't matter much for the gameplay though, only a bit irritating...

Mother of all RTS games which deserves only one mark: 10/10. Nothing more and nothing less.

This is it folks. The game that kickstarted a whole new genre of games. What a game it was as well. I spent countless ours on this as a kid. All I could think of at school was getting back home to play this. I even ran through my strategy at school, then testing it out at home.

Well, what more to say..
This is the mother of all RTS.
A gem back then, and still today.
It hasn't really aged much, for the gameplay is still
superb and very addictive.
The only option I now miss is selecting
more than 1 unit at the time.
Truly a 9..

To call this game "The best RTS of all time" is simply unfounded. Don't get me wrong - this game is quite good, but it does have its flaws. The houses weren't really balanced, there was no limit on units you could produce causing sometimes clunky gameplay, and multiple factories would not produce multiple units, which made the entire game focused on one building for effective unit buying (the starport). Again, don't misinterpret me: I've played through this game several times and loved it every time... But if I was going to introduce someone to the RTS genre, it certainly would not be with this game.

7-10 Then

This is, in all actuallity a really great RTS. That said, when I read that this is the father of the RTS genre, I must state that despite how great this game may be... You must look to the REAL daddy. Hertzog Zwie - Sega Genesis 1989. Not only was this game released sooner, it was (arguably) a better game. HZ offered not only great strategy, but an action element to boot that made all the difference in a 2 player game. Yes, I said TWO player game. Great game that was REValutionary as oppose to EVOlutionary.

Dune II was actually first part of "Command & Conquer" series! What a great strategy game. I have finished it several times with all houses. Really nice atmosphere and you get the feeling "being at Dune". It has one or two bugs but they don't ruin the game at all. The real shame is that doesn't support multiplayer mode via null-modem-cable! Now, THAT would have been SERIOUS fun! Nevertheless, a true masterpiece in Amiga gaming. Classic! 9/10!

About the first and last RTS game I ever played. Got me totally hooked and a sore arm after an hour and a half of ceaseless clicking on each individual unit to defeat the emporer..
Kind of a cheat is when you hear the palace firing the missile, you can quickly save the game and re-load until it doesn't destroy half your base.

This game has not aged well. Still, as the great grandfather of RTS we owe it a debt of gratitude, even if all it does today is sit in it's bathchair farting and eating Werther's Originals...

Finished this also but only under the Hankonnens, Fantastic Game, even better than the first!.. Gameplay is totally different, more action, less story! This was the first type-genre of this type of game, of course many PC games cloned the gameplay (Command & Conquers, War Crafts, Age of Empires. There's also been a couple of remakes for Dune II, (Dune 2000 and Emperor: Battle for Dune, but none of it has matched the atmosphere of the original!

Before Command & Conquer there was Dune II, based roughy on Frank Herbert's classic "Dune". Although Ordos are not in the book that can easy be over looked. The game control is very intuitive, so you can get right down to playing once you have understood the basics of the game. Since each level of the game offers more and more hardware to play with, the fight for supremacy on Dune never gets dull. Your computer opponent isn't too smart, but he's got some quite effective offensive manoeuvres up his sleeve.
This game will remain one of my favourites.
